Hi All , We have been wondering how soon before moving over we should open a bank account and what benifits if any this will give us, does it help with credit raitings etc? We have been sent info from Westpac wich seem ok but any info on them or recomendations on any other banks would be great. Thanks everyone. John & Julie :notworthy:

Here is your opportunity to praise, to rant, to give social commentary or whatever you like whether it's trivial, topical or just plain silly (just as long as you obey the forum rules....) Let me kick it off with: Is it me, or.... are there more butterflies around Melbourne at the moment? There were four around the outside of my daughters bedroom window this morning, I felt like I was walking through a classic Walt Disney movie! Ok, your turn.... Geoff

Opening bank account before arriving to OZ and transferring money
EugeneS posted a topic in Money & Finance
Hi folks! We're heading for OZ approximately in the end of the year. As far as I understood from some of the older threads here, it is possible to open bank account before actually arriving and provide some arrival date estimation. My question is about how is it practically done? Can just do it online? If yes, how? And the second question is regarding money transfer. Can I deposit some money after opening the account? If yes, how that can be done? Please notice that I do not arrive from UK. Thanks in advance!! Eugene- 2 replies

We have approximately 100 positions that need to be filled right now so if you are interested we would be happy to speak to you about the various roles and contracts, pm me for more info or email carol@globalforceresource.com . *Note that our clients will provide visas to placed candidates as well as assistance to the families should they decide to relocate. Thanks again GlobalTrotter x -
We are possibly coming over to Oz on a 457. We are looking at all our options for PR in the future in case it doesn't work out or lead to ENS 856. DH has an occupation that is on a few of the State lists (I know this can change at any point). He has enough points and experience but the only problem is that he can't pass the skills assessment without a degree. Realistically our only option is the OU. Anyone know if this would work, or how to find out? Various internet searches haven't helped so far. Many thanks.

Anyone go to any of the open days across the UK?

Hey guys, This is a problem that i have been thinking about ever since i decided to move over to Sydney. I'm openly gay here in the UK, when i say openly i mean if somebody asks me i will tell them or if i want to tell somebody i will. Not many people have guessed that i am and some people even said im not when i do tell them (straight acting lad) But my question is, is there anybody on here that can offer some advice? I have heard that Sydney is gay friendly from some and from other say it's not? My worst fear is when i get over there in January i will feel like i have to hide it all over again especially from people at work/my boss just incase they don't like it, after all my employer will hold all the cards with my visa etc.. Just in little bit of a pickle here Any advice would be great (bigot's need not reply)

Hey Guys, Heading up to Melbourne for the Quarter Finals of the Tennis in Jan, hoping Murray will still be in the competition by that point! Heading there on my own at the moment. Any other Brits heading to Melbourne for this who fancy some pre and post game beverages? Cheers Stuart

AITSL any PGCE Open University graduates have any problems with skills assessment?
Geordielass44 posted a topic in Visa Chat
Hi I am a qualified teacher . I passed my PGCE a number of years ago through the Open University. The transcript is not very detailed and after a number of requests I have been told that they are unable to provide a more detailed transcript than the one I have. They have been very helpful with all my requests but I am concerned the transcript is not enough. I know that AITSL may want more detail. Has anyone else OU trained had any issues having their PGCE recognised by AITSL? Or has it not been a problem? My visa geezer will be submitting, but as i am 45 in less than 6 months ,we are hoping there will be no problems to hold up lodging the visa.-

My folks are on an Emirates flight out of Sydney to Dubai at 6am this weekend. Has anyone flown on this flight and if so, when do the check-in desks open? Silly question I know. The website says 2.5 hours before scheduled departure but I cannot imagine the desks being open at 3:30am. My thinking is coloured by an experience of getting a 6am flight out of Edinburgh with KLM once. We turned up at 4:30am as requested, but the check-in gals rocked up at 5am. (I know it is only half an hour extra in bed but it all helps!) Thanks.

Money still in UK - where to SAVE it that I can open from here
Julian927 posted a topic in Money & Finance
With the exchange rate still AAWWWFFFUL we have money still in the UK. Can anyone suggest a savings account that I can open from over here that gives me a reasonable interest rate.....the one I have currently is coming to the end of its year and the rate reverts to low, low low. I thought maybe my husband could open an account with ING (3%) but find that you can only ring an 0800 number and need a touch tone phone....so any suggestions welcome. Julie -

Well as luck would have it, i pre-booked a long weekend off not realising the British open was on and i can sit and chill out watching the worlds best golfers slog their guts out in the horrible weather in Scotland, its the middle of summer, thats a laugh and the weathers like the middle of winter, which is normal here in the uk, but it is worse in Scotland. Anyone put a bet on, i was going to put a tenner on McDowell at 28 to 1 and he missed the cut, so i have saved myself £10. Anyone else got a favourite, me i want Darren Clarke.

Does anyone know of any GP's open on Sunday in Melbourne? Anywhere in the metropolitan area will do. It's not an emergency but rather was hoping to avoid time off work to visit. Had an appointment with one this morning but for various reasons was forced to cancel it last minute and Google hasn't helped thus far. Thanks

As some of you would have noticed recently I often contemplate a career change, well at least something different I guess, man of many 'skills' me, but crap at most, :biglaugh::yes:. I guess I'm not really looking for a career change, rather to become a bit more knowledgeable in certain things that I truly love, my thoughts so far are Ichthyology, Entomology, Marine Biology or a very basic Psychology course. I only ask about the Open University because I am unable to leave the home for any lengthy period of time, :wubclub:, and I think the costs 'may' be slightly less than a 'traditional' uni. As I said, it's not so much a 'degree' status I am looking for, more to arm myself with more knowledge about certain subjects and really enjoy, I love learning and 'think' I may enjoy it. Also is the fact that I didn't do brilliantly at school, unless the lessons were Geography or Saltwater Flyfishing I to my shame rarely was as studious as I could have been, :embarrassed:, so I guess I am a bit dim when it may come to entrance requirements,. I have been online reading reviews etc, but I trust you lot more than a total stranger giving their opinion so would really appreciate the pro's and con's of the Open University. EDITED TO ADD. I only ask as you will notice the subjects I have chosen could be very useful in OZ (and are OZ related in a way) when I finally get back and may come in handy if I ever have the time to pursue them when in Australia. Many thanks Tony.

Hi Guys Can anybody please advise me I went to my bank Barclays and they advise me that if I am out of the country for more than 6 months I am not meant to keep an account open in the UK by rights. The only thing is I have a rental property here in the UK which I am going to keep on until or if the prices start going up and have the rent payments paid into my account. What do must people do in this situation please? Do must people who emigrate still keep an account open or do they transfer it into there Aussie Bank Account? I would really appreciate any advice on this matter. Kind regards Debbie
