    Should we get a container?

Me, my hubbie and our 2.5 year old are moving on a 190 visa from Manchester to Brisbane in September. We are hoping to sell / bin / charity shop the majority of our stuff but still have a few items of furniture, pictures, clothes etc that we would like to take. I think half a container would be more than large enough to fit in everything. My question is does anyone know roughly how much this would cost and also do any firms offer space in a container rather than having to have the whole thing or half?. Also we are thinking of just paying 6 months rent up front once we have found a place - does anyone have any experience of this? Is it the norm if you have no Australian credit history, previous address etc? Any advice would be great!
  3. I see that many people wonder 'where to live?' when moving to Australia (especially if they don't have family here already). I came here from New Zealand nearly 20 years ago with my Pommy ex-husband and we headed straight to Queensland as I had a sister here. The Redcliffe Peninsula is just 30 minutes north of Brisbane and so has access to all major city facilities. For many years it was a sleepy seaside village but now has 55,000 residents and is predicted to have significant capital growth. There are now many new apartment complexes on the waterfront, sensational canal homes as well as a variety of other real estate options. If you would prefer a 'sea-change' rather than living in a tight-knit suburb, then consider the Peninsula. You can find fabulous beachside properties at very reasonable prices. If you have friends or relatives living at North Lakes, Queensland already - it's just 10-15 minutes from them. I'd love to show you around... Happy New Year! Karen
  4. Hi there, Firstly I would like to introduce myself. My name is Bianca and I am 29 years old. I have been in Australia for nearly 2 years now and have never had a problem making friends till my partner wanted to move back to Brisbane to be near his family (he is Australian). We have been here 9 months and I am starting to feel a bit lonely. As much as I love spending my time with him there is just some conversations and girlie things I like to do (like have a natter) he is not interested in. And I cant blame him! There is only so much sports bike and car talk I can handle too! lol I am looking to see if there is some more of you girls out there that would love to meet up, have a glass of wine, a chat and maybe make some friends. B x

  7. Hi, as the title suggests I am a new mum and live in North Lakes. I am just wondering if there are any mother's groups in the area. I am 30 and my son is 10 weeks, would love to meet new mums and bubs of a similar age, I'm starting to get a bit bored
  8. Hi we moved to north lakes 2 month ago, we have 3 children, but our eldest, aged 13, nearly 14, is struggling to make friends. He's a normal, full of fun, friendly boy so not sure why? So was wondering whether there's anyone in the north lakes and surrounding areas with boys or girls of a similar age that might also appreciate an extra friend. I think if he could make a good friend or two it would make his settling a much more positive experience, but at the moment it's really getting to him thanks x
  9. We've got our hands on the visa at last and the one-way flights (scary thought!) are booked for Jan 2nd 2013. Would love to chat to anyone in a similar situation. Myself, my husband and our 7 month old daughter are making the big move. Just trying to decide which suburb to rent then buy in; there's so many to choose from! People have recommended North Lakes and Warner; the houses look fantastic, but we've been put off by posts saying it's "Brit central". Anyone got first-hand experience of living there?? Nicky x
  10. Hi, we're thinking of moving up to the northside of Brisbane as Richard now has a job based in the CBD, and it's a fair commute every day, (plus with our ping-ponging, house prices on the coast are a bit out of our reach now as we're pretty skint!!) House prices in Kallangur and surrounding areas seem pretty reasonable, but we don't know too much about the area, and which schools are any good. We would get a rental to start, and I'd like to try and get it in the catchment of a good school to be sure of places. I'd like one that has before and after school care (for if I ever manage to get a job), hence North Lakes and Kallangur State schools. Does anyone have kids at either school who could comment, or even info about the area would be appreciated? My kids are in Prep and Year 1. Thanks, Jo :wubclub:
