  1. I am looking for the name of an animal which makes an extremely loud, long-lasting screeching sound (=noise), starting and ending abruptly. Almost every night shortly after dark the animal in question, which seems to be sitting in or living near trees, starts this noise together with several of its cheeky animal friends of the same sort, almost like a concert. What a clever little bugger, whatever it is....... It's a terribly noisy, loud, screechy, and kind of creepy sound. Like a siren, a broken door alarm of some sort. Sorry can't describe it any better. BTW I live in St Kilda if that helps. Does anyone know what that animal is called? Has anyone heard the sound too? I am curious to find out.:err::eek:
  2. Hi all, We are arriving in Sydney in December and after the Xmas break we will be aiming to track down a 2/3 bed rental property (apartment or similar). My base of work will be north of the airport but south of the CBD - office location not decided yet, but likely to be Alexandria or nearby. We would like to have a reasonably decent rental accommodation and are prepared to venture a little further out of the city (say about 30 min commute - ideally by public transport). However, I see if you head south you are getting dangerously close to the airport. My aim would not to have numerous aircraft passing overhead all day (although I guess this would potentially keep the rent down). However, it would be good to be close to the airport, as I will be required to fly to Brisbane quite oftern in my new role. Toughie, but anyone "local" to Sydney - any thoughts as to potential good areas to start looking for somewhere? Thanks all, Martin

    Aircraft noise

We currently live in Scotland close to one of the noisest airforce bases in the UK and are very keen to live in a quieter area when we go to Oz. I note that there is an RAAF base in Sale in Victoria and wondered what the noise level was like? Is this a reason why the house prices in that area seem lower than might be expected? Louise
