    New(ish) to Melbourne

Hi there. My partner (Karen 48) and I (41) moved to Oz just over a year ago from the North East (Durham) and the thing we are finding the most difficult is meeting people and making new friends. We thought it was just us but having read various threads on here, it appears a number of you have gone through the same problems adjusting to Aussie life away from friends and family. We are planning on attending the meet-up in Mornington this weekend so will hopefully meet a few of you there but if anyone else is in the same boat and lives nearer the city (we currently live in Maribyrnong) and fancies swapping stories of Oz and back home over a coffee or better still a beer, we'd love to hear from you. Cheers. Phil

    New-ish to PiO. Help!

Hello there, I just wanted to pick some of your brains if that's ok. I was on here ages ago and got disheartened with the path we were heading down. Hopefully my new circumstances will shed a bit of light to the dream of going to Oz! Here's my situation: I have a degree in IT and approximately 9 years working experience as a software tester. The (BIG) problem I am facing at the moment is that i've been at home looking after my young children for the past 4 years, but have recently gone back to work part-time in the IT industry as a Database administrator. (ASCO code 2231-11 or 2231-79). Does anybody know the minimum no. of hours I need to be working per week that will constitute a full-time job? And also, do I have to be working a certain number of months before I can submit my application? I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks

    New(ish) in Melbourne

Hi I'm Kathryn and new to PomsInOz site. I am 34 and moved to Melbourne in Oct 08 with my OH from Sheffield. We have recently split up after 8 1/2 years together, so I am feeling quite lonely and sad. I am here as a permanent resident, initially for a year to see how things went. After a year I wanted to stay as I love it here and don't want to go back to the UK, but need to find some new friends and make the most of living in this fantastic city I am a Management Accountant, and currently live in Ivanhoe with my cat Holly who is also from the UK. K xx

    Newish to Melbourne

Hi, we moved here last year from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. My husband is working and the kids are in school and for the first time I'm not in work! I have spent time getting the kids settled and I don't want to turn into a couch potato so I'm looking to build a social network, as we don't know anyone here. Can anyone recommend any social groups, preferably in the northern suburbs?
