    Over the moon...

Hi all, Finally got my 457 visa through on Monday 12th April... Flight booked to Perth for 7th June, ONE WAY 'cos we ain't coming back! Here is my story..... My wife an I decided 2 years ago to emigrate to Australia, and started the ball rolling properly in Feb 2009. I appointed an Agent (PTLabs - Who are first class, and a specialists in IT migrants), and set about pulling all the paperwork and forms together. I'm an IT Project Manager, with a degree, and 20 years experience in the field. The only slight concern was my age, having just turned 40 I was in the lowest point band. I needed state sponsorship to get a fully independent visa as this would get me to the magic 120 points. Initially we aimed at Melbourne as IT PM's were on the Victoria skill in demand list. First step was my ACS skills assessment, which took around 3 months to be granted. This was issued June 2009. During this time however, IT PM's dropped off the Victoria list. I was gutted. However Peter at PTLabs quickly pointed out that Western Australia now wanted PM's.. It was game on again! I began to compile my state sponsorship forms and information and submitted this in August 2008. I was expecting a result in about 4-5 months. Again we suffered more worries, as a change of immigration rules in October 2009, moved IT skills of the critical list in terms of processing time. I was left with an expectation of visa grant taking 2-3 years after issue based on the new rules. To say i was gutted again was an under statement. Undaunted though we continued with our plans, and in the meantime we planned a fact finding holiday in Perth. We flew out December 9th and spent a fantastic time living the life, including spending a wonderful Christmas day at Mullaloo beach. Then the strangest thing happened. I met up with a former colleague while on holiday (an Aussie who'd moved to England, didn't like it and went back to Perth. He was now regional Director at a very large Software Consultancy). To cut a long story short he offered me an interview (though i had no interview clothes to wear!) and i was offered a job two days later. They would also arrange sponsorship via a 457 business long stay visa. They wanted me to start April/May 2010. I'd suddenly gone from a possible wait of 2-3 years to now being wanted in a little over 2-3 months! We came home 2nd January 2010 even more determined to make the move, and promptly got on the case with the completion of the 457 paperwork. This was submitted February 13th 2010, and we waited. In all the excitement of being offered a job, I'd completely forgot I had an outstanding state sponsorship with Western Australia! I'd still retained PTLabs as we needed a permanent solution, and the 457 is only temporary, albeit for 4 years. More good news followed early March when Peter at PTLabs told me the Sponsorship from WA was granted... There had been a bit of mix up apparently and the request had been canceled. It was only when Peter chased it up that this came to light. Following the chasing a decision quickly came through and it was a green light. My 457 forms were submitted and I was playing a waiting game. I didn't know what to expect in terms of timescales for a 457 to be issued, but my sponsor give me the impression it was 4-6 weeks tops. 4 weeks came ; Nothing. 5 weeks ; Nothing. I was beginning to get restless and worried (just ask my Wife!). Then 6 weeks, then 7 weeks. Finally after almost 2 months I got the green light. The 457 was issued. I was over the moon. I've continued with a 176 sponsored visa for permanent residency, and this was submitted a couple of weeks ago. It will flow through the system and may take the 2-3 years the new rules state, but i don't care! I'm already on my way and can bide my time while everything falls into place. We are now all systems go for the move. The flight is booked. I fly 7th June, will have a couple of weeks orientation time to sort out tax number, medicare, car, house etc and start work on 21st June. It really has been an incredible year. I have gone through highs and lows, and been rock bottom, especially in October last year when I though the dream might be over. The turning point was the job offer - A fantastic Christmas present, and I've been on a high since. I wish everyone the best of luck with their own moves, and hope my story inspires or gives comfort to people that even when you might be low, the plans still come good. My tip? - Get over there. Get some interviews lined up and try and get a sponsor. You end up on the fast track and be there within a few months of returning from your holiday. Andy

  8. Venus, Jupiter and the Moon converge for a big show Friday, 28 November 2008 09:14 Venus, Jupiter and the moon will converge in the night skies over the next few days and promise to provide an amazing view. On Saturday November 29th, Venus and Jupiter will be less than 3 degrees apart in the Southwest after sunset. Then on Sunday a slim 10% crescent Moon will appear and hover just below Venus and Jupiter – like the symbol on the Turkish flag but with two shining ‘stars’. But the best night will be Monday 1st December when the now 15% crescent Moon moves in closer to form a triangle with Venus and Jupiter as opposing vertices. The three brightest objects in the night sky will be gathered so tightly together, you can hide them all behind your thumb held at arm's length. See picture. The celestial triangle will be visible from all parts of the world and will no doubt be widely photographed. Only cloudy weather can spoil the show. For those of you with telescopes, you’ll be treated to a fantastic view. You’ll be able to see the moons and cloud-belts of Jupiter, the gibbous phase of Venus (69% full), and craters and mountains on the Moon. It's a Grand Tour you won't soon forget. Finally, look up from the eyepiece and run your eyes across the Moon. Do you see a ghostly image of the full Moon inside the bright horns of the crescent? That's called "Earthshine" or sometimes "the da Vinci glow" because Leonardo da Vinci was the first person to explain it: Sunlight hits Earth and ricochets to the Moon, casting a sheen of light across the dark lunar terrain. By itself, a crescent Moon with Earthshine is one of the loveliest sights in the heavens. Add Venus and Jupiter and … well ... it's time to stop reading and get out that telescope. With thanks to NASA for all this interesting stuff!

    Moon Pig

Hi All, Just thought I would say.. Moonpig have asked if they could have a spot on PiO to advertise their card services and I quite liked the idea of sending card from the Uk to the Uk as I'm in Oz so it seemed like a genius idea - and also folk in the Uk can order card in the Uk that are sent in Australia for Australia. Anyway I hope that makes sense - I just thought I would draw your attention to it. Would love to know what people think of the idea? Tim PS I do get a small commission from each card sold through the advert - so it all goes into helping keeping PiO going.
