Utterly confused about the Medicare Levy and Medicare Levy Surcharge
eddiep posted a topic in Visa Chat
Hi all I hope you can help again.....these forums have been great. I move to Melbourne in early June on a a 457 VISA. As part of my 457 Visa application, I have to have a private medical insurance policy for all my family. I've been looking into this with BUPA, IMAN NIB etc and for a fairly comprehensive cover it is looking like a pretty eye watering $500-$600 per month or so. If I need to take this out, as I want to be well covered, then I'm happy to bite the bullet. However the piece I am struggling to understand is the Medicare Levy and the Medicare Levy Surcharge. Our family income will be above the income threshold resulting in a 1.5% levy. It is my understanding that under reciprocal arrangements, that we would qualify for Medicare. What I don't want to do is face a double whammy of paying a Medicare Levy and MLS AND pay the private health insurance on top. I have a couple of specific questions: 1. Am I right in saying that if I have the private health insurance (which is a requirement of my VISA anyway) that I am fully exempt from the Medicare Levy and or MLS? 2. If not, then presumably i just want to take out basic cover (as I am Medicare covered) with some extras such as Ambulance and Dental Covers as extras? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. -
Hello to all, I am finally in the process of sorting out my visa after receiving my IELTS results (8.5 overall - score!), but just wondered if anyone had any experience of the AIMS assessment for medical laboratory scientist? I have all of the university modules that they require, however I haven't been working in a clinical lab as such. The work i've been doing is with patient samples but not strictly in a clinical diagnostic sense. Any idea how closely they stick to the job description when they make their decision? I'm also slightly concerned that I wont pass the exam without 6 months of furious studying - some of the questions on there sample paper are on areas that I haven't dealt with in almost 10 years . :wideeyed: My migration agent is absolutely ademant that I will get a positive result (and if i dont she doesn't get paid - no visa/no fee). So should I just get on with the paperwork and hope for the best, or wait until July when the new SOL list comes out and see if there is a better match for me? Many thanks in advance for any comments or ideas!

My head is spinning! Been on phone all day trying to find a private health in surance (basic) policy that is less than the MLS. From this year we will have to pay 1.5% medicare levy AND 1% surcharge. The whole point of the surcharge is to get people to buy private hospital care cover but for the life of me I cannot find one that is less than or even equal to the MLS! The lowest quote we got is $1000 over the MLS therefore to my mind we may as well pay the surcharge and just get separate extra's cover which would still be cheaper than the quote. Everyone has quoted the basic private hospital insurance but then say in order to avoid paying the MLS we have to pay an extra amount which can be as much as $148 per month to avoid the MLS. One "basic" quote I got was $3000 over MLS and the lady couldn't understand that there was really no point paying $3k over MLS to avoid paying the MLS - lols. The extra payment apparently does not get "used" and is just an add on. :arghh:Does everyone pay this extra payment or is it just 457 visa holders?

Hi everyone, I am trying to finalise my 457 visa application and I am quite confused about the Health Insurance requirements. The visa agent has been helpful although I still have questions and think you will be able to advise me better. I have been asked to provide evidence of cover for 457 DIAC requirements. I have seen various policies that meet the minumum requirements plus offer extras etc.. Arranging this therefore appears simple. My specific questions are: If it is worth upgrading from the minimum? Some appear to offer an upgrade that is the same as Medicare, for which I will be paying a levy so unsure on what the point of them are. Do any 457 policies result in us NOT having to pay the MLS? Again, advice appears unclear in this regard. Do I need Travel Insurance as well as Health Cover? There appears to be contradictory views given I cannot register for Medicare until in Australia even though I am from the UK. I am keen to get my 457 application in as I am looking to move quickly (early August ideally) and this is the last thing that I need to sort. All advice will be much appreciated! JoBazOw:confused:
