  1. My family and I are going out to Sydney anytime between Nov 2010 - Feb 2011 for 2/3 weeks. My wifes Sister in Law lives in Sydney. We're using this trip to check out schools, the housing market, what we can afford near the best schools, job prospect and general cost of living etc. etc. I intend to contact several potential employers and maybe even apply for positions advertised on Seek and set up some interviews. I'm going to take my portfolio and a lot of my work can be seen online anyway. Does anybody think companies would let me in the door to talk to them? Has anybody tried finding employment this way? My intention is to gain empoyer sponsorship. I don't need the company to pay for the move, just want the job. Thanks guys

    Info Gathering Mission

Hello all, newly registed to the forum and just seeking a general info bomb. My husband and I are thinking of leaving this broken Britain and want to raise our children somewhere they actually have a future. Both of us have expressed an interest to each other about emigrating to another country and after 6 years in Germany living abroad has little fear for us. Basically at the moment we are both trying to explore our options, Husband is a mechanical engineer, with experience in quality control, calibration and also aircraft support vehical maintenance. We are hoping his extensive engineering background and 15 years of experience will help us in our mission to move down under. I my self although a stay at home mother am currently attending classes at the local college in website design. We are looking in a very generalised way at Victoria as our ideal area to move to, mainly because we have a distant relative in the area. But welcome other suggestions. So please feel free to spam me with information and links we really need to get as much intelligence as possible before we start the visa process  Thanks in advance Tori
  3. Hello, Very long time no speak! Been off PIO since March 09 because I was getting frustrated that we were such a long way off emigrating it was depressing. Anyway, just back from a 3 week reccie and wow, we can't wait to start moving things on. There's absolutely loads to sort out and we're not sure where to start really, or if we'll qualify (fingers crossed!) but we've been, seen everything we need to see to make the decision and feel dead excited and privileged to be in our position. Sure I'll be adding plenty more threads but just wanted to reintroduce myself and open up a discussion, particularly for those maybe considering a move and who haven't been yet because... WE HAVE AND IT'S GREAT! Thanks and look out for more! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Jo
  4. Hi All Just joined POI and wanted to say hello and pick your brains! We have thought about a move for a long, long time & now decided to take things more seriously by retraining career wise etc. Anyway we plan a scouting mission to Sydney next year but wanted to know.... Wheather to go in Jan as it will be summer, or August as flights are cheaper & will be cooler as we have a young son, who would by then be over a year old so may be easier?? Also what is the work like for teachers & policemen. And most importantly, will I cope with the bugs??!? This is from someone who freaks out over a money spider! :arghh: Thanks & any advice appreciated.

    Sydney Scouting Mission

Hi! 6. What a great day in oz we had today. We spent the day fishing on the pumice stone passage (moreton bay) We decided this time that we would take the bbq with us as the little one (age 4) gets bored. So while we were sailing up and down the passage we decided to head to one of the numerous golden beaches on Bribie Island. By pure luck we stumbled upon a camp site which only had 10 pitches there. The place is beautiful, and after talking to some people already there we found out this place is a national park spot, costing only 14 dollar per night to pitch up. We are now planning our trip for next weekend. eddie
  7. Hi all, I’m feeling like a headless chicken at the moment because over the next 6 months we’re trying to organise visas, a wedding, a honeymoon, 2 months travelling around Oz and prepare for our new life down under!! What makes this really difficult is the complete randomness of visa processing timescales. I'm sure I read somewhere (so it must be true) that it’s probably easier to predict the winning lottery numbers. Does anyone have a clue? Do people actually work at these processing centres, are they all at the beach or is the number of visa applications so vast that they need enormous warehouses and forklift trucks just to store the applications? Anyway, the question I want to ask is has anyone on PIO married just before or just after their visas have been approved and did this cause any issues or delays? If we get married before the visa is approved I assume we would have to: - Change name on passport - Scan and upload new passport and marriage certificate to online application - Send off passports to get stamped/attached with the visa What would we need to do if we get married after the visa is approved or we’ve already had the passports stamped/attached with the visa? Any advice greatly appreciated. Regards Colin
