    Masters in Australia.

Hello, I am from Bangalore, India. I recenty completed my undergraduation in Life Sciences and want to pursue my Masters in Australia. I have shortlisted a few universities, UniMel, UniQueens, Monash, UniAde. I have looked into various blogs and articles about life in Australia but haven't found a relevant one as of yet. Can anyone let me know about the life of an Indian Masters student? How it is like, the cost of living? I was thinking about taking an education loan but then again, to know about the cost of life and quality of life in Australia beforehand would be of great help. Thank you.
  3. What are the requirements for a Masters Program to count points on Skilled Visa subclass 189? I am thinking about going to a masters program in Melbourne for both career enhancement and to improve my points by the end of it. My assessment institution is ACS, the professional association for IT.
  4. Hello there! I'm hoping someone here could offer me some advice on scoring points within the Aussie study requirement. Currently I have ACCA professional qualification and a BSc in applied accounting and I was hoping to study Masters in economics in Australia. Now what I'm wondering is whether Aus authorities would deem masters in economics a 'closely related subject' to the profession of Accountant (General)? Do you think I can claim points for the study requirement in this case? Thanks a lot Monami
  5. Hi, just want to inquire on behalf of my sister whose planning to come here in Melbourne on a student visa. She'll be taking up a masters degree and that entitles her husband to work full time. They have a 6year old daughter and will go to a primary school. Tuition fee is bloody expensive at 8,000 per year. Just want to find out if they can get some sort of discount or refund once her partner starts working fulltime. Cheers!

    The Masters

The Masters is getting exciting. We have an Aussie leading (Adam Scott) and 2 Aussies tied for second (Jason Day and Geoff Ogilvy). Hope one of them can win.

Studying for a Masters in Sydney

My husband and I are both desperate to get out to Oz, but his profession is not on the skills list (IT) and although mine is (pre-primary teacher), I don't have the relevent recent work experience as we have 2 young children and I have been at home with them for the last couple of years. After 6 months of looking and applying for jobs to try and find a sponsorship opportunity for my husband, I am now thinking of applying for a Master's course in Oz which would then give my husband temporary working rights and me part-time working rights. The plan would then be to study for my Masters while hopefully my husband would be able to find a job which may lead to a possible sponsorship. I would be really interested to hear from anyone else who is doing/considering a similar route to Australia, or anyone with any advice/comments as we would really love to do it, but wonder if it is rather hopeful to think he would be able to find work on a temporary visa, and quickly!
  9. Can anyone help me on this one? I need to know the ASCO code for this course. Thanks a lot.
  10. Hi Guys Just wondering if anyone has any experience of the following or has done the same thing. I know Im doing alot of thinking here but Im trying to think of the best options to get us to Oz. Basically at the moment we have applied for SS with the ACT - when it is successful we will lodge our 176 before July 1st. At the moment we are using the OH occupation 2231-11 Systems Manager to apply for our 176. As we don’t know the new SOL or the SMP for the ACT we could be in for a 2/3 yr wait which will bring us up to possibly June 2012/2013 and its highly unlikely that the occupation will be on the new SOL and at the moment 2231-11 has been changed to the offlist and is not in demand anymore. At the moment I am continuing my degree which will be completed by July 2011 - but I will have actually have it in before then - just the results dont come out until July 2011. Ive done alot of research into the area that I am currently working in and unless I am a qualified Social Worker/Psychologist my opportunity for work will be limited so I have actually decided to do a Masters in Social Work when I arrive in Australia. Ive already checked to ensure that I can meet the requirements for this course and I definitely do. At the end of 2 years study I will be a qualified Social Worker and will be able to become a member of the AASW. It makes practical sense for me to do this for my long term career prospects. The sample SOL also has Social Worker on their list so I would imagine at this stage it will be on the new SOL- HOPEFULLY. Social worker however is on the Quota list for the ACT at the moment and is limited but of course all of this could change. I have been in touch with the Australian Catholic University in Canberra and I know that I will have to wait until August 2011 to apply. The masters starts in February 2012. Because we aren’t sure at this stage if our 176 will be granted or not and I know that it is a risk to take ........ but we were thinking in the interim we could apply for a subclass 573 – higher education visa for Australia (Masters by Coursework). This would allow me to work 20 hrs per week and my OH could go on this visa as my defacto and it states that if you are doing a masters that your dependants can work an unlimited amount of hours. Obviously we know we would have to pay international fees for both myself and my daughter plus Health Insurance. So I was wondering could we go on a subclass 573 with me as main applicant, then when we arrive in Canberra we change our 176 to an onshore 886 as my OH is the main applicant on the 176. Does anyone know how this works or if it is even possible? Any advice, opinions or comments would be grately appreciated. Thanks Suzanne
  11. Looking for some advice, What are the chances of me being able to stay in Oz after 2 years study? What are the pathways to PR, if any?
  12. Hi guys, gals! I am hoping you can help me out! I wonder if there is an international public health forum in australia? I am trying to find out: 1) Why is the MIPH course in sydney university 48 units but it is 24 units in university of queensland? Why is the difference in the number of units so great? Which university is better recommended? Is there a difference in future when I search for a job? 2) Will it be a disadvantage to start in semester 2 instead of semester 1? Will I be falling behind the rest if i start in semester 2 in university of queensland or sydney? 3) What job opportunities do I have after my masters, being an international student in queensland or sydney? Thanks!

  14. Hi guys i'm not sure if this is the right place to ask for this type of advice but ill try anyway.... I will be finishing my degree in Information Systems (hons) this year, however I am thinking of undertaking a masters degree part-time. Im only thinking of doing this because although I am 26 am I right in thinking that by doing the masters degree course and getting two years work experience would give me a better chance of getting a work visa? Hope someone can help me out....
  15. hi! We are looking at different options of going to Oz. I want to do my Masters anyway, and this seems ideal - to rather get an Oz qualification and do this with student visa.... Hubby will be able to work full time as Mech engineer/ fitter and the children will pay standard school fees (according to Immi - this is only for Masters/Phd students). We are very positive that he will find work when we are in Oz, we will not be limited to one state, as the course is taught in blocks FIFO, which is ideal. It is CRICOS registered too. By the end of the first 12 months I will hope to find a job offer. I have emailed a few consultants in the field and they say even with current situation, the field is crying out for skilled people, so it looks positive .... If hubby doesn't have a 457 visa by end of the first 12 months, I will have to do another course, maybe a general post grad diploma in the same field, which will be helpful later. We will also qualify to apply for a 176 visa after hubby has worked for 12 months, so maybe we can go down that route. Hope all of this makes sense? My questions... - are there any other post grad's students out there on a 573 /574? - Is there anybody who got Perm residency after 2 years' FT studies? - Can I go from completing a Masters in the first year, and then do a post grad Diploma, both on the 573 visa? Has anybody done something like this? Thanks for your help, anybody else on student visas or about to apply for student visas, it will be great to chat about the whole experience, worries etc!!! Thanks!

    What to do?

Erm i'll just give you the facts, basically. I'm 23 and my live in fiance is 28. I am going to finish my UK LLB next year and we both want to move to Australia permanently. My Dad lives with his de facto partner who is Australian, (my dad is Scottish), in Perth, this is where we want to go. My partner is a distributions warehouse supervisor and has no formal training in anything. I might carry on my studies in UK for one further year to do a Masters is Comparitive Federalism. Basically we are all confused as to what Visa we should apply for, My dad said he would like to sponsor us. Is this enough on it's own with my law degree or do I have to have a further Post Graduate degree and job offer and would my partners career prospects be any good in Australia. :skeptical:
