  1. Hi all Just wondered if anyone could help us. We are coming over for a 1 month holiday to validate our visas and have a good look around for schools, suburbs and properties in July/Aug. We have a few Airbnb holiday places that I wondered if you could tell me if the area is a good location for us. We have 2 children (one is 2 one is 7) and we'll be hiring a car. We will all be in the car a lot, looking around, but my husband will most likely be taking the car off on his own to have a browse around too. That mean's I'll be left in the holiday home to either go to the beach, go shopping or visit the local entertainment areas. My question is, what area's a good to live in for a month as a base point? At the moment we have an option of Devon Park, West Beach, Renown Park, Pooraka, Walkervile or Glenelg or Henley Beach. Which area is best without a car with 2 little ones in tow (pushchair too)? Any help really appreciated. I am posting this on the main site also to get a general consensus. Regards Sarah

    Hi everyone. just joined

Hello all, I've just joined this site so thought I'd say hi. I'm planning on moving over to Queensland later this year. I'm going to spend a little time visiting different suburbs and areas etc to get a feel for them and see where I'd like to settle but wondered if anyone could give me some suggestions? I'm considering commutable distance to Brisbane or further up the sunshine coast (perhaps in between). Work options for me are greatly increased if i an get into Brisbane CBD. The problem however is I really fancy being near a swimming / surfing beach and I believe that these are an hour or so away from Brissie. The thought of being able to go for a surf each morning before work is quite literally a dream. Also, I like places that have an arty and community feel, ideally with independent shops rather than large Coles stores etc. Any ideas? Look forward to hearing your suggestions. G
  3. Hi everybody This is my first post to PIO... ...and we are leaving in only two months from now! :arghh: I have secured a job in Sydney which is great but as a result we are having to work very quickly to pack up our lives in London and arrange everything at light speed for when we arrive in Sydney. We are very lucky to be provided with four-weeks temporary accommodation by my employer when we arrive which is fantastic but this is still not that long to try to arrange rental accommodation thereafter. We are pretty sure that we want to base ourselves in the Eastern suburbs on the basis that they: offer a quick(er) commute to the CBD where I am working are close enough to be able to walk to the beach and are a short hop from the airport (I will need to travel quite a bit for work and my OH's family is based in Brisbane All of the above sounds like a recipe for very expensive rental prices which is perhaps a conversation for another day. What I was really keen to understand was what everyone thought about the strip of suburbs from Bondi down to Maroubra. Other than a couple of visits to Bondi we haven't spent any time in the area before. I lived in Northern Beaches for a year about 12 years ago but other than that we know basically nothing (my Aussie OH lived all her life in Brisbane before coming to Blighty). We have seen some very nice-looking 3/4 bedroom houses in South Coogee and between Coogee and Randwick but we don't know whether these are nice areas, accessible, noisy, clean etc. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated as we really have no idea what we are doing at the moment... The few people I have spoken to have told me that Bondi is where it's at for night life etc but after more than ten years of living and working in London this is not necessarily the draw it once was. I am 33 and my OH, who is expecting our first child, is 29. That's not to say we don't like going out and enjoying ourselves, we quite like being close to the CBD but we also appreciate a bit of space and a bit of peace and quiet - we currently live on quite a quiet street in London. I drive a Vespa in London and I am keen to drive either a high powered scooter or motorbike when I get to Australia so good/fast public transport is not a must-have. If the CBD is bus/trainable in up to 45 minutes then that should be fine. Any thoughts, comments, ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
  4. Hi Guys.. Not sure if I am even using this site right, as it's the first time I have been on here and never used a forum before... Anyway.. Me and my family are looking to relocate to Perth next year and am looking for nice locations not in the city, but accessable to a train station.. Any good ideas please??
  5. Hello, I am a British male aged 28. I have a 12 month working Visa and will be ariving in Australia in September 2011 and am trying to assess where the best work opportunities are. I am very flexible and prepared to live and work outside the big cities. I understand that many migrant workers/backpackers preference is to work in such places but this is not a priority for me. I am from the English countryside. Growing up on a farm I have labouring and agricultural experience (driving farm machinery etc) but no specific qualifications. I am physically strong (6'2 14 stone) and can handle labouring work. I understand that there is often well paid work on farms and in the mines for people who are prepared to work in isolated locations doing unpleasant/physical work. I also have a university degree related to Leisure and Tourism. I understand that this is a big sector in Australia. I question whether any employer would take me on for a full time position given I have only a 12 month visa and limited work experience in this sector? I also understand that in Australia, like the UK, there are many people whith such degrees (too many) who can't get work in their chosen areas? What/Where is the best paid semi skilled/unskilled work? Where are the best work opportunities?i.e. plenty of jobs available. Where is the best place to save money? i.e. decent wages and lower living costs. How is it best to find work in advance of arrival in Aus? I have family in Sydney and will be staying there initially. How is best to look for work in other regions once I've arrived there? From what I understand arriving in September should be a good time as there will be seasonal work. Is there any seasonal work I should look out for? i.e stuff that is only available a short while that I should take as a priority as it will only be around for a short while. I could then move onto something else afterwards. My plan is to work and travel but would like to work first and save up as much cash as possible. I'm a hard worker and want a job where I can get stuck in and get plenty of hours. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  6. Hi All, Need a bit of advice regarding potential locations Pondering job offer based in Mulgrave but the role will take me all over the continent and frequent flying will be required with the job. We will have a budget of $600-700 a week but would be looking for a property either near a beach or with a pool (Wife's Conditions ) . We have two kids, 1 primary age, 1 secondary so schooling is important. I am sort of looking around the M1 corridor area so far from Pakenham to Camberwell but don't really know too much about the traffic in the area and if its a logical option for airport(s) access. Any tips on the areas to narrow down my search?
  7. Hello everyone!! I am moving to Sydney at the end of August and can not wait! It will be my first time I have ever been to Australia and am finding it hard to decide what areas would be best to live! I am trying to find somewhere that is not overly expensive and has a good nightlife, shopping and restaurants. I will be working near Wynyard so need to live within commutable distance from here. I dont mind taking the train. I have looked into surrey Hills, Bondi, Coogee and Randwick which all look amazing! Does anyone live or have lived in these areas that can provide me with any insight? Thank you all in advance!!!

    advice on location needed please

we are a family of 4 consisting of 2 teenge boys moving to Melbourne. we are fortunate that due to the nature of my husbands job it allows us to be very flexible in where we live. We are however looking at being up to 1 hour outside Melbourne itself, ideally close to the beach, with good secondary schools which all in all offers a safe family based location. I have seen Mount Eliza and this seems ideal, however if anyone can comment further on this suburb or offer advice on other areas that sound suitable I would be very grateful as I feel like im looking for needle in a haystack right now. thank you

  10. Hi All, Due to the success of the last meet up arranged by Andy in the CityWest Hotel Dublin we are looking at another meet up for Sat 7th of May. Not sure of location as of yet as will wait and see who is planning on coming. We may change location this time to a more child friendly place. Andy suggested a Park and maybe we do a BBQ which sounds great (Weather Permitting) and we can meet earlier in the day to give more time for a catch up. Anyway leave your details and everyone is welcome. Look forward to catching up with everyone.

    help on location please

hi all im hoping a few of you can offer some advice on the better locations to live in sydney. i have a good offer on the table for a job based in rosehill/parammatta. i have a beautiful wife and two young girls (both under 3) and would want to live within 30 mins of the office by car (so for the first time in my career i can enjoy breakfast and bedtime with the family in the same day!!) which puts living near the coast out of reach. could anyone advise the better places to live. schooling will soon become very important, as does a sense of community, amenities such as parks, shops and restraunts within walking distance and a great gym with chid care would be great. we have up $800-$1000 a week available for rent. we have researched around the west pennant hills, ryde areas, are we on the right lines or is better available? any help you can give will be gladly recieved regaards and thanks GA
  12. Hello All This is my first post on here so sorry if its been done before or in the wrong place but we would really appreciate some help. We are currently living in SA but hoping to move to WA sometime next year. Long story short we had to come to SA first for work but its not for us. We are a young family of 5 (kids aged 2,4 &6). Is it possible to get a 4 bed house 30 mins drive out of Perth for about $400k? If so what are the areas and are there any to steer clear of? Much appreciated.

  15. Hi We are thinking of moving to Berwick. I was looking up schools as I have one child in Kindy but there seems to be heaps in Berwick. Can anyone please let me know which schools they would recommend (pref public as can't really afford private at the moment). Also, are there any specific areas of Berwick that would be more suitable for a young family. Thanks

    Brisbane Suburbs

Hi We are looking to relocate to the brisbane area towards the end of this year after we finally get our visas and was wondering which suburb would be best for us. We would be looking for a house rather than an apartment and would ideally like to be reasonably close to a beach without being to far out of Brisbane. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Neil An Gem

    where is my dream location?

Right, my flight leaves in about a week so I need to start thinking about where to live. My dream place would, in stack ranked order: 1) Be somewhere where I can rent a decent two bed place for up to $550 PCM 2) Be located within walking distance of station at the end of a trainline or tramline, so I can get a seat on the morning train/tram in to the CBD 3) Be within walking distance to some shops/cafes/bars 4) Be close to the beach 5) Be within ½ hour of the CBD on a train/tram N 6) Not be in the inner city – I prefer living towards the suburbs. Any starters for 10? J
  19. Hello my husband is a FCCA qualified accountant with experience in both practice (about 15 years) and industry (about 5 years - financial and treasury accountancy). He is 40 this year and we have been talking about taking the plunge and moving to Oz. I am a CIPD qualified HR Manager (although I am not expecting to work although this would be nice and we have two sons, aged 8 and 5. If we came over, it would be on the strenght of Nicks' points (which he is delighted about - finally got one over on me!). I was just wondering where the best place to be is bearing in mind that he would certainly need to get a job within 3 - 4 months of us arriving. Is there any way we could research the types of accountancy jobs available before and which State offers the most opportunites! Some big questions here, but this will all help with the deliberation process. Am currently booking a reccy trip to take in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, but we are really open about location. For me it is about making our lives balanced and taking advantage of the great outdoors as the boys love it. Any comments or help would be appreciated. Thanks
