  1. Engineers have said they were "stunned" to unearth a 17th Century cottage, complete with a mummified cat, during a construction project in Lancashire. The cottage was discovered near Lower Black Moss reservoir in the village of Barley, in the shadow of Pendle Hill. Archaeologists brought in by United Utilities to survey the area found the building under a grass mound. Historians are now speculating that the well-preserved cottage could have belonged to one of the Pendle witches. The building contained a sealed room, with a mummified cat bricked into the wall. It is believed the cat was buried alive to protect the cottage's inhabitants from evil spirits. 'Tutankhamen's tomb' Carl Sanders, United Utilities' project manager, said: "It's not often you come across a fairytale cottage complete with witch's cat. "The building is in remarkable condition. You can walk through it and get a real sense that you're peering into the past. "Even before we discovered the building, there were lots of jokes from the lads about broomsticks and black cats. The find has really stunned us all." Simon Entwistle, an expert on the Pendle witches, said: "In terms of significance, it's like discovering Tutankhamen's tomb. "We are just a few months away from the 400th anniversary of the Pendle witch trials, and here we have an incredibly rare find, right in the heart of witching country. This could well be the famous Malkin Tower - which has been a source of speculation and rumour for centuries.

    Hello - newbie here!

Hi everyone, Just though I would drop in and say hello, my hubbie, 6 month old boy and I are reloacting from lancashire to Brisbane. I am a nurse and am applying for jobs as we speak. My mum, stepdad, sis and stepbrother emigrated 5 years ago and are australian citizens now and we are joining them with our little one. Not started the visa process yet just applying to the AHPRA to be a registered nurse in Australia was hard enough. Will no doubt be picking all of your brains in the future!!! 7. Just wanted to write a short post about our journey from UK to Australia, as we used this website as a reference tool, we thought it only right that we contribute something back. The Beggining... We sold our house in lancashire at christmas for a huge loss, we could have waited out for what we wanted but thought what the heck so cashed in our chips, booked a flight and came over to Australia with just suitcases. Treated it just as a holiday hoping we would get lucky. Arrival... We stayed with friends for the first month the found a nice house to rent, then I went looking for work with fingers crossed. If i didnt find anything we were just going to treat it as a holiday, so had nothing to loose. I found a job within a week ringing around and looking on the internet. I arranged an interview and went to see them knowing i didnt have a workng visa. They offered me the job there and then and said they would help with my 457 visa, result. We used a migration agent to handle everything for he was excellent well worth the money in our opinion. The Visa.. Now the bad news. Typical of our luck we arrived just as the recession hit and an election. New rules were brought into the 457 just as we applied and this made things really difficult for us and our visa application. To cut a long story short after months of going backwards and forwards with no positive news from immigtration and being messed about no end. Our application was looked on afresh by a new case officers and we were granted our visa after a few days. The Result... So it can be done, this would have been near impossible to do from the UK, rather than taking a few months it would have taken a 18-24 months easy we reckon. If your thinking of coming over here on a 457, do it now sooner than later. Our migration agent told us our applicaiton would have flown through last year, but with all the new changes they have made with the 457 due to the recession, its now very had, I thank my lucky stars all worked out well, it could have been a disaster. It cost us an arm and a leg mind you to finance the trip eg: flights, living costs, rental car and most importantly the children being out of school for a long period but definatley worth it. We wish any family wishing to make a lifestyle change to Australia all the luck in the world, but it can be done, we are proof of that! If any couples want to contact us please feel free.
  8. Just a quick introduction to all PIO members. We (Me, wife and 2 kids) emigrated from the UK on the 1 Jan this year and found our way down to this lovely part of Victoria..the Mornington Peninsula. It's a shame that I have only recently become aware of this site because if you are anything like us, we had a thousand and one unanswered questions prior to moving out here - this site is just so informative! However, if anyone has any questions about this region, please don't hesitate to ask..if I can't answer them, my brother has been is Oz for 20 years, so I'm sure that I can find the answer for you. PS - I'm working Full Time for Westpac as a Home Finance Manager (essentially a mortgage / home loan specialist), so if any of you guys need advice on the house buying process in Aus, please don't hesitate to shout. Look forward to hearing from you.

  18. Hi Everyone A BIG THANKS to all that made today happen, what a great day, I really enjoyed meeting you all, and wish you all the luck one can wish. It was great to hear so many different stories - I don't think there were any of us with the same story to tell but the one thing that was common in all of us was the feeling that we are prepared to go through all the trials and tribulations that the process can throw at us in order to attain a better quality of life for ourselves and most importantly our children. Cant wait to see you all again if anyone needs to chat more than happy for a pm. To all the younger ones that are un-sure of moving, Australia is a great place with lots of bike riding tracks, sports to play and new friends to meet. Good luck and we wish you all the best for now and in the future, grab everything with both hands and don't let your dreams get away! With the warmest of wishes Geoffrey, Tracy & family
