    Karratha & Surrounds

Hi All, I have searched around the forum for info on Karratha but most of it seems old. We are contemplating a move to WA early next year and not sure what to do about living... Will we base ourselves in Perth and FIFO? I doubt it, I would love the desert living in Karratha so I's say we'll all go straight there regardless of costs, besides I don't think I could leave himself for a month at a time:no: I have read up about schools, weather issues and the 'lonesome' living but one thing I didn't see mentioned anywhere is horses... Do they have them up there? (That sounds awful but I'm sure you know what I mean!) I'm big into horses so would be an easy decision if they were easily accessible up there. Next step is to look into work for me.... maybe

    Views on Karratha WA??????

My brother is sorting with his boss to sponsor my husband to work in his Tavern as a Chef. We have 4 children (2 daughter's aged 13 & 11 and 2 sons aged 7 & 5). Now I've done some research regarding renting/buying a house and the weather, plus info from my brother (he loves it) but he has no family to care for. What is it actually like to live there? What is there for kids to do? What is the lifestyle like? Can you survive on wages that aren't miners wages? Any info/personal opinions you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Vikkey x
  3. I didn't write it but soo true me thinks... A Diary of a Pom In Karratha August 31st Just got transferred with work into our new home in Karratha, Western Australia, now this is a town that knows how to live!! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place! I watched the sunset from a deck chair on the veranda. It was beautiful. I've finally found my my home. I love it here. September 13th Really heating up. Got to 35 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper. September 30th ad the backyard landscaped with tropical plants today. Lots of palms and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but i love it here. October 10th This temperature hasn't been below 35 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat. At least today it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected. October 15th Fell asleep by the pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this. October 20th I missed Kitty (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time i got to the hot car for lunch, Kitty had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $3,000 leather upholstery. I told the kids that she ran way. The car now smells like Wiskettes and cat sh1t. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat. October 25th The wind sucks. It feels like a giant fxxking blow dryer!! And its hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the blink and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive over and tell me he needed to order parts. October 30th Been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now. Bloody $600,000 house and we can't even go inside. Why did I ever come here November 4th Its 38 degrees. Finally got the ol' air-conditioner fixe today. It cost $1,500 and gets the temp down to 25, but the bloody humidity makes the house feel like its about 30. Stupid repairman. I hate this stupid fxxkin place. November 8th If another wise arse cracks, "hot enough for you today" I'm going to fxxkin throttle him. Fxxkin heat! By the time I get to work, the car's radiator was boiling over, my clothes are soaking fukin wet, and I smell like baked cat!! November 9th Tried to run some messages agyer work. Worse shorts, and sat on the black leather seats in the ol' car. I though my fxxkin arse was on fire. I lost to layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and my fxxkin arse. Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass and baked cat. November 10th The weather report might aswell be a fxxkin recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and fukin sunny. It's been too hot to do anything for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this damn fukin place? Water rationing will be next, so my $5,000 worth of palms just might dry up and bow into the fukin pool. Even the palms can't live in this fxxkin heat. November 14th Welcome to HELL!!!! Temperature got to 41 today. Now the air-conditioner's gone in my car. The repairman came to fix i and said "hot enough for you today?" My wife had to spend the $2,500 mortgage payment to bail my ass out of fail for assaulting the stupid fxxker. Fxxk Karratha! What kind of sick demented fukin idiot would want to live here? December 1st WHAT????? This is the first day of Summer??? You are fxxkin kiddin!!!

    Karratha here we come

Hi everyone, I just though I'd drop in post as I'm a long time lurker. Myself and young family have been in Geelong for the last 2.5 years however an oppportunity to transfer with work to Karratha has come up and for various reasons we have decided to give it a go. If anyone on here has any insights on the town and surrounding area it would be great to hear them. Cheers
  6. Hi all, My Hubby has a potential job offer in Karratha and we were just wondering if anyone could give us any info on the place and what it has to offer. The job has the potential for FIFO but thats another dilema altogether!!! Whats worse living in a remote town and seeing my hubby couple of hours a day or living near a friend in Sydney and having him for a week a month??? Anyone with experience of FIFO I would be grateful of your thoughts. Cheers Christine

Hi all, Just wondered if anyone knows anything about the Karratha area? For soem reason rents are really high there - any reason for that when it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere? Is there anywhere cheaper to live that's commutable?

    Brisbane, Cairns or Karratha

Hi Guys and Girls, Me (24 years old) and my girlfriend (34 years old) are looking to move to Oz in the new year but there are a few problems. The first is i have just got a Working Holiday Visa but because of my girlfriends age she cannot get one. So, is the best thing to do for me to get a job and then for here to get sponsored for a visa when we are out there (here just being on a Holiday Visa at the time)?? The next is where the hell do we go? I had my heart set on Brisbane because of what I've read, heard and pictures I have seen. BUT I had an interview for a BGC Contracting on Sunday and know that if I get offered the job it will be ridiculous money, say $150k thats basic and site allowances etc. BUT I would be based in Karratha on a FIFO to Perth on a 15 days on and 6 days off rota, or I can be on 10 days on 4 days off but live in Karratha and get lodge, but the house prices there are ridiculous. If I went FIFO I wouldnt see my girlfriend for 15 days at a time! Plus Karratha is very remote, is it worth the money? I have an phone interview with the Queensland Government on Friday and if successful I would be based in Cairns on between $70-76k so half what I would get at BGC. So do I go for Cairns or hold out for a job in Brisbane???? Bearing all this in mind I need to earn enough to send home say £500 a month for loan etc. back here in UK so I need to earn enough to do that. But then saying all that if girlfriend gets a job then that would be ok to earn less. Sorry for the essay but I need help!!! :arghh:
