Need all the advice I can get!

Hi everyone Im new to the forum, and joined because im seriously looking into moving to australia. Before i ask a tonne of question i apologise as I know they have probably been asked 100s of times before but trying to scroll through all the theads is a nightmare I am a complete newbe to all this and need all the help i can get, if any of u could help me with getting started that would be great. As the construction market is terrible in the UK, my girlfriend and I are wanting to move to australia in serach of work. I have a degree in Building surveying and my girlfriend has a degree in Architecture. What sort of visas should we be looking at and how long do they take to complete and be finalised? Obviously we will go where we find work, but is there any sites that allow u to apply for jobs in australia to start in maybe 6 months time to give u time to move, or is it better to move somewhere first then look for the jobs? Any advice on accomodation would be great, rental companies, advice on length of leases, typical rental prices for a one bed apartment? How much more expensive is the cost of living? just so i can gage what would be a decent salary Any other advice like setting up new bank accounts, phones etc would also be much appreciated. Sorry to be a pain because I know so little! Thanks Stuart
  2. It would be great to get other's thoughts on this. No plugging, and I have been a recruiter since 2005 doing the 457 option, and believe me when I say the last 3 years haven't been a great time for us International Recruiters, finally some of my old clients are once again asking for candidates (albeit a trickle) Are we seeing the fabled 'green shoots' in Australia as well? Best Richard

    Hi, help and scared!!!

 Hi all, just to fill you in a little....... i met my partner 6 months ago, we've been living together in UK but due to a visa issue, very recently, she has moved back to Oz (she is Australian). I am looking to move out there on a tourist visa so that we can eventually live together for the 12 months and apply for a same sex (de facto?) visa. i cannot go straight away as I have children with my previous partner and we have to deal with all of the legal bull that comes with that!!! I hope to be there in September...... i know I can't work until I get the de facto visa but having read all of the difficulties on here with getting a job.....well put it plainly.....I'm scared! Should I get a police clearance form or is there anything I need, I was hoping to do volunteer work before I get my visa. Luckily my partner has a fairly well paid job but I don't want to be unemployed forever!!! I can't live like that. Here, in the UK, I am in office management/project co-ordination/PA and on job sites the jobs seem plentiful but everyone seems of the impression that foreigners can't get work Also any advice for visitation rights for children when the non custodial parent emigrates...... I have PR and I am the children's 'other mother' and I have shared residence here.....anyway any advice, positive or negative, is gratefully received!! i was so excited before I started reading the horror stories!!! Thanks in advance xxx

    Charities in Oz

Hi I currently work for an overseas development charity in the UK and would love to continue to work for some kind of charity, NGO or caring organisation when we get to Australia - ideally in fundraising. My Australian OH, who left Oz ten years ago, thinks that I'm unlikely to get much choice and would certainly be paid a low salary if I got something because the Aussies aren't into organised charity like that - they help their mates and others but on an informal basis only. He doesn't remember the likes of charity funruns, telly fundraising events, collection boxes in supermarkets etc. Would anyone agree with him? I've done some research and there seem to be busy international charities like Oxfam and other national/local charities in cancer research, environment etc. but it's hard to judge how big they are and no-one seems to list their salaries on their job offers. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

  10. Hi there, My OH is currently tearing his hair out looking for work in Sydney. He is a Mechatronic / Electromechanical Engineer specialising in product development - mechatronics / electromechanical design & project management of product development. As yet, he has found it pretty tough going finding many jobs around in this field. Does anyone out there work in this industry, and know of any recruitment places or anything that may be of use? Thanks

  12. Hello, I am in need of some help from people that work in Hospitals throughout Australia. I am looking to move to Australia in the next few years and i am looking into jobs over there but i have such an unusual job it is so hard. In the UK i am a mortuary technician but in Australia i would look to be a post mortem assistant. I have found 2 adverts for roles in this area but they are both years old and i cant even find info on mortuaries. I know that in Hospitals they are called either Department or Institutes of Forensic Medicine. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that was working within a hospital that could get a contact name and number, or email address. I have a couple but they are from the job adverts so i have no idea if they are still there and active. Even finding out the job code for a visa has been a bit of a nighmare!! Any help would be great, Michelle
