  3. Hi there, We have at last been granted our residence visas for Australia and are now going to be validating our visa at the beginning of September. We are heading to Melbourne to stay with family and are then going to undertake a reccy across to Adelaide, as our 176 is for South Australia. Can anyone help with answers to some of our questions? We will be staying in Adelaide for 3 nights, we have a 2 year old son, so an appartment would be the best option, can anyone suggest/name some places to stay....approximate cost? If appartments hard to come by, which hotels would be the best option? What areas should we NOT look at for housing? What areas are family friendly and affordable? How much would a 3 bed house cost? To buy and to rent? What estate agents should we check out? My profession will be mental health nursing once qualified, what are the names of hospitals that have adult psychiatric wards? Any other information that you think may be of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Helpful links thread.

I have just copied these links from another thread on housing sites and shopping, hopefully someone will find them helpful. Remember you will be roughly paid about $2.2 to £1, when you get your skilled job in Australia, ignore the current exchange rate, you will be paid in dollars and the cost of things shopping needs to be based on this rate, for you to judge the cost of items, but you can still get things cheaper than Coles. www.realestate.com.au www.domain.com.au www.realestatewa.com.au www.real-estate-australia.com.au Check out grocery prices on: www.coles.com.au woolworths.com.au
  7. Hi everyone I have been on PIO for over 2 years now on and off and although this is predominently a site for people emigrating to Australia, it is also a site for people coming back to the uk. So for those of us who are wanting to go, or who are going, we obviously don't want to make the same mistakes (no offence meant) as some, who it hasn't worked out for, i think a - what to be aware of thread with tips and good advice from people who have tried to live the dream' but it hasn't worked out for them, these people can genuinely contribute good advice, admittedly it might not be what some of us want to hear, but never the less some of it can be helpful. Also for those lucky enough to already be living in Australia, your tips and help is more than welcome also. I do not want to offend anyone and i would appreciate it if this thread could have posts on it that are helpful and non aggressive and no arguing please. I say lets pull together and post good helpful advice for those who are facing the daunting prospect of living in a different country far away from family and friends. I will start by saying that, i think i have heard on PIO that any teenager who is wanting to go to university in Australia, will have to pay overses fees, unless they get citizenship, or they have been there more than 4 years and have Permanent Residency.......... is this correct and what is the difference in fees?

  9. Hi Everyone! Hoping someone out there can help us with some advice and suggestions. We have decided that Melbourne is our choice destination (choice between there, Sydney and Adelaide) I have read loads about it on Web and looked at loads of maps etc and it just seems the right place for our family. My oh will likely be working in CBD as thats where the companies in his field seem to be based. Ideally commute would be 30-40 mins by train if possible. We have 3 kids - girls aged 12 and 10 and a little boy of 15 months. We are looking for a family friendly area with good schools, ammenities etc. The girls are keen dancers, gymnasts, cheerleeding and enjoy drama. OH is big fan of mountain biking and running. ( I just about catch my breath on a good day!!!) We will be looking to rent initially so any info or suggestions would be greatly recommended. We are over for holiday in April 2011 (unless by some miracle from above I win the lottery or oh gets job offer before then) I need to start scoping out potential areas etc as I am building up a portfolio and just dont know where to start  xxx

    May be helpful

Hi everyone. New to all this so not sure if I am doing this right. I have been in Australia (Sydney) for some eight months now, and am finding it really difficult. But I found a company over here that was so helpful. Even though i and family made the move thinking it was going to be a dream come true the whole thing turned out to be a nightmare. The company is called the boomerang syndrome, i think! and was based in Perth. I dont know if I am doing the right thing but i hope i am. I logged on to this site whilst i am over here again, aghhhh and noticed some posts from them i think it is them anyway. All i can say is that they were brilliant in the way they talked to us and without them we would not be going back to Australia.I hope they may be able to help anyone who is like us. When i last spoke to them they said they may be opening in England, but that was two months ago. Cheers Sharon
  13. Dear all, I have three questions; 1. after one get state sponosorship(wa) but before he granted 886 pr visa, can he leave australia or wa provided that his 485 visa is not expired? or you have to commit to stay in wa only after you have been granted the 886 pr visa? 2. Can I lodge the 886 application before I get approval from the state sponsorship, I am now waiting the result from the wa state sponsorship result, but Can lodge the 886 application while I am waiting the state sponsorship? 3 How much faster is the 886 with state sponsorship compared with normal 885(heard taken 15months)? thanks in advance

    Visa Helpful links

I am hoping that people here can share helpful links and advice for completing the forms for the visa. I know there must be hundreds of websites that would give valuable advice, but time is against us all. So if people have already found useful websites please feel free to post them here to help me and other newbies . Things like RPL, Visa apps, and so on. Thanks Paul :notworthy:
  16. HI there, we are just looking into areas in Brisbane and through looking at some of your threads, some websites etc it seems Wynnum would be a good area for us. We are a youngish family - me and my partner mid 20's and a daughter whos 1, so are after parks, safe areas, young families, playgroups etc. And also like the idea of the mini beach there. Also we are wanting to be kept busy where we go and hopefully not left twiddling our thumbs missing the UK. Also like restaurants/bars etc (but think we wuold have to go into Brisbane for this on the odd occasion??), or other like-families to socialise with after work etc (BBQS!) Does anyone know if Wynnum would be good for what we are after, are can you suggest anywhere else? Also what area of Wynnum is best - looks quite spread out? And how old are the properties here, can u get new builds?:jiggy: Many thanks if anyone can help, or good to hear from ppl with any advice.

  20. Hi, With meds booked for next Tues, I had a final review with my consultant today for a neurological problem I had a year ago (legs went numb overnight!). It seems that it was all caused by a virus in my spine:mad: Anyway, after he had checked me over and told me I was normal (I always knew I was..haha:p ) I asked him to write me a note to take with me next week to show the panel doc. He got the history and results of my case photocopied and then wrote on it that I was completely recovered and neurological responses were normal! Hopefully this should be enough to satisfy panel doc? I was thrilled that he was willing to do this for me on the spot after reading about other peoples problems with getting information together for med stuff. I went prepared to beg thanks to reading on here:wink: Thanks to all who have posted on this issue before, without you all I wouldn't have known to get something in writing from him before meds. This is a really helpful site

I have just been watching the BBC news item about the croc in Darwin, the message being use your common sense..... Well I didn't I started reading about all Oz's wee beasties and then started to panic about the [/b]spiders eek!! I have read a few posts about how best to deal with them and I think that investment in some of these ultrasonic repellents, lots of spray and the pest man spraying our home may just make me feel happy!! I chill to the bone when I see a house spider here at home!!!! It would be such a shame to let our dreams go to pot because of my stupid and irrational fear!! Sarah x :?

    Really helpful

I just discovered this website yesterday and have spent yesterday afternoon and this morning practically devouring everything on here! My husband is from Perth WA and we are looking to move there next year. We started on all the seemingly endless paperwork back in Feb/March. We are just awaiting statements from our 2 Aussie friends and then we'll be ready to apply. We're applying under the spouse visa and we decided to go it alone instead of using a migration agent due to costs. I wish I had found this website earlier as I have found so much useful info on here. Good luck to everybody moving down under. Georgina
