    New girl in Perth!

Hi everyone! I’ve been browsing this forum for a while but this is my first post! My partner and I have just moved to Perth and I thought I’d say thanks for all the helpful advice about migration that we’ve found on the forum in the run-up to the big move! We got here last Thursday and its all been a bit overwhelming so far! I’d never even set foot in Australia until last week and have spent all week driving around the city trying to find a place to rent… in the rain! (Apparently this is Perth’s worst weather ever or something… rain, rain, rain! It’s making us feel at home! ) I was nervous about a lot of things to do with the move, I’d heard loads of horror stories about how expensive it is out here and our first shopping bill made us do a double-take but we seem to have things figured out a bit now. Fruit and veg isn’t that expensive (except for bananas… yikes! But that’s to do with the QLD floods apparently…) and it’s all really good quality and HUGE! Meat and fish seems good value too, but the processed/ packaged stuff / tins and jars are pretty pricy. Guess I’ll just have to get better at cooking then! Oh and there are some GREAT prices on wine, so I guess we’ll have to drink a lot of that too! Perth is beautiful… even in the rain. I’ve never been a city girl but the CBD here is chilled out and looks pretty, so I think I could get used to it! The trees here are huge and the plants and flowers in Kings Park are gorgeous. I’ve seen lots of lovely birds here too, like green parrots and kookaburras! It still feels a bit like a holiday at the moment and I have to keep reminding myself I’m not going back to my old job and home in a few weeks and catching up with my friends. We are just trying to push on with the house hunt so that we feel more settled soon. I’m really keen to meet some folks in the area so if there is anyone on the forum that wants to get together, I’m up for it! : ) Sophie

    New girl alert

Hi all, Really glad to have found this forum. looks like just what I need to help make the leap to Oz. Im a 30 year old London girl looking into grabbing that years working visa in Australia before its too late, although currently having issues deciding where to stay. I work in television broadcast and would like to keep working when I'm away, so it looks like my options are either Sydney or Melbourne as the big television companies are there. Everyone keeps telling me I'd be perfectly suited to Melbourne but I'm attracted to Sydney for the weather. I know I can travel around but I'm likely to spend more time in one place than another. Still, not a bad dilemma to have, and I'm looking forward to researching the choice, so any advice from others who have made similar decisions would be appreciated!

  23. Hi everyone, I wasn't quite sure what section to put this thread on but decided this would probably be the most apt! I recently put up a post regarding our family dilemma and the choice we were faced with regarding staying put in the UK without work, or returning to Oz with the possibility of a very different senario. I received some excellent advice, as always and am truly grateful for all the support I received. Well the result is that hubby HAS been accepted back in the Western Australian Police and after a lot of soul searching and hard thinking we have decided that we will, after all, be heading back to Perth! We have certainly raised a few eyebrows this end, but we have also encountered a few who have been in our position and are really supportive and understand our reasons for doing so. We either sink here or swim there. It might not be the answer long term, but much as I love the UK, it is no place to be when you haven't the security of a decent job and you stand to lose everything you have worked so hard for. I am under no illusion that I will have my off days and am fully prepared for them. I also have mixed feelings about where our future ultimately lies, but one thing I do know is that I am coming back with more positive feelings than negative ones! sometimes you just have to grab the bull by the horns and make that all encumbering move! The difference this time, is that I don't intend to make my choice of residence there my final resting place (at least not at the moment). I feel that it is the stepping stone towards what I am really aiming for. We already have residency, so once we can get citizenship, we are free to come and go and would like to look at the prospect of moving on to either Melbourne or Sydney. We have come this far and will bloody well make it work this time. If I am qualified to give any constructive advice here to anyone thinking about returning to the UK, it is that they really must secure a job before doing so, as life can take a turn for the worst in these difficult times and it is a position I never envisaged being in and don't ever want to find myself in again! Having said all that, I will never stop loving the UK and don't intend to abandon or forget it altogether. I have very close family here (as we all have) and in a few years time, who knows we may even be able to live between the two, but for now we are simply heading to where the work is and live a decent comfortable life while the children are growing up. What the future holds, WHO KNOWS! but I intend to keep going until I find out! Thanks to everyone who has helped me through the journey! Jackie XXXX
