    Big Foot

Sometimes when you buy a pair of shoes, one of them can feel snug while the other one does not quite fit. Tom Boddingham certainly knows the feeling. When the 27-year-old ordered a special monster-design slipper to fit his oversized left foot, he was sent this size 1,450 one – because manufacturers failed to spot a decimal point. He had requested a 14.5, as well as a smaller size 13 for his right foot. The pair cost £15.50. However, manufacturers in China misread the measurement and accidentally made the whopping seven foot-long slipper, which was shipped to him along with the correct smaller size. Now 6ft 7in Mr Boddingham, who wears custom-made shoes because of the different sizes of his feet, will sell it on eBay. Mistake: Tom ordered his custom-made slipper from the Monster Slippers website Mistake: Tom ordered his custom-made slipper from the Monster Slippers website ‘It was sent directly from Hong Kong and measures 210 x 130 x 65cm – the same length as a grizzly bear or a family car,’ said Mr Boddingham, from Ilford, Essex. ‘I must be the owner of the biggest slipper in the world. ‘I’m going to sell it online, and if I can make a few quid out of it then all the better.’ Online slipper company Monster Slippers – which is based in Dunmow, Essex, and has the motto ‘for the animal in you’ – apologised to Mr Boddingham and has not charged him any extra. A spokesman explained the mistake occurred because of a ‘translation error’. ‘We are making him a replacement slipper of the right dimensions,’ he added. Apparently workers in the slipper factory assumed his giant order was for a shop window display.
  3. Looking to ship my Rover 75 over. It only got 45000 miles on clock so would do as a starter for Australia. What else can I fit into a 20 foot container along with it. I realise nothing can go inside the car. We are not looking to take lots. Electrical goods, excess baggage, toys and tools for example. All suggestions welcomed. Thanks

    Foot in both Countries

Just sharing my feelings after 20 plus years in Oz. Love Oz and feel lucky I have had the opportunity to live here with my family. However the older I get and as life in Oz becomes routine just as it does in any country after a few years, I find myself wanting to spread myself between both countries. I still have most of my siblings and parents in the UK so I definitely have a pull there. However I now have an Oz kids who like the UK but unless they are backpacking or professionally located in the UK ,have no desire to leave Oz. Thus my dilemma is this - how practical is it to buy an apartment in the UK, say around the coastal areas like Boscombe, Bournemouth etc for say 3 mths a year (during UK summer of course) and say 9 months in OZ. My work is such that I can operate substantially by the net so it doesn't matter where I am as nowdays even conferencing in mainly by the net. So my questions amidst my confused ramblings are - how commonplace is this foot in both countries amongst us Poms? and Has anyone entered into a similar arrangement and if so how successful was it. p.s. my wife who is an OZ who I met in London can also work via the net so no problems there. However we wonder if our kids might run amok while we are not there to feed, clothe and pamper them and generally keep them on the straight and narrow. They are 24 and 25 and there seems little chance that they will ever make our OZ home an empty nest. Now thats another story for another forum!
  5. does anyone know how much it costs to ship a 20 or 40 foot shipping container from oz to uk?

  7. Hi all, Was wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how much or what we could fit in a 20 cubic feet container. We are trying to work out costs as to wether it will be cheaper to ship or buy in oz:arghh: Thanks very much in advance.
  8. My OH reminded me that today is exactly 15 years since I first set foot on Australian soil. Anyone else, other than Captain Arthur Philip and me, who arrived on the 26th? I watched the Red Arrows fly around the harbour but missed the fireworks at night (jetlag). Stayed at a lovely hotel at The Rocks. Happy Days.

    10 foot shared container cost?

Hello Has anyone got any idea how much a 10 foot shared container costs from the UK to oz? We used Wridgeways to come back to the UK from OZ and it cost about $3,500 for a 10 foot shared container. I haven't contacted any of the removalist companies yet, but was wondering if anyone can give me a heads up on how much it could potentially cost? many thanks! Laulau

    Foot in the door..!!!

G'day, wonder if anyone can help. We have been here is aussie land for just over 1 year now, we came September 2008. I work as a nurse and work at a nearby private hospital on the Gold Coast. Hubby has applied for every job under the sun..!!! He is a tradesman, marine engineer ex army 24 years, he has applied for carpet cleaning, mining, sales jobs, obrien windscreens you name it. Just cant seem to get a FOOT IN THE DOOR as dont know anyone in industry. We have no reles here only distant ones in Sydney so no family with contacts for work if you know what I mean. I do understand the Job situation on the Gold coast. We are even thinking of cutting our losses and moving to another state. Hubby has applied for jobs all over now, in WA, North QLD,even Victoria. It would be an upheavel as we would have to do removals all over again and also fly our two dogs again, but it feels like this is the only option we have. Any ideas????? we will not be beaten and love the way of life out here,Our son loves it here too and we moved over here for him..just getting frustrated now thats all:arghh: Good luck to everyone on the same rollercoaster....!!!!!!!!!!!

    A foot in each camp!!

Hi, I am new to the forum but have read and absorbed everyones stories and it is so nice to feel an affinity with peoples feelings. I believe getting it out and saying it is good for the soul, so here goes. I have been in Australia a total of 11 years. I moved here with my husband and 2 young sons aged 2 and 4 yrs. The first six months was a journey of great adventure and discovery. Then I started with the homesickness and it's never really left me. Dave had a good job and I was nursing part time.I had coping strategies and my husband was awesome. My family came to visit, and we had a visit back to the UK. Yet after 4 years I pulled the pin and that was that we sold everything and moved back home. I was happy, the kids were settling back into school and had all their family around them. The only thing was David didn't get a job straight away so I was working fulltime while he held up the househusband role and gradually got more and more depressed putting a strain on our usually strong foundations. Long story short, after 6 months I couldn't stand him being like that so we came back to Oz and have been ultimately fine since, EXCEPT I live with my yearning for home every single day. I learn to deal with it for the sake of my wonderful family and the life we have here, but I feel I have sacrificed half of my self and am not a whole person. My boys are both in high school now and in the back of my mind I think that when they finish its my turn to ................ I wont go on as long posts are hard to read but think just writing it down in an arena where I will be understood is good medicine. Gail
  14. Hi We are landing in Perth in Jan - Ive booked the Ascott Quays Hotel for the first couple of days & are booking the Perth Shttle from the airport - they have emailed me & said the can pick us up but can only drop us on the other side of the road to the hotel & we would need to cross both carraigways to get there ???? Is this ok ? is there a footbridge over? we will have 4 kids - 10,9,6 & 5 & four large suitcases - or would we just be headlines in the paper the next day for shortest migration to Oz ?? Thanks Rachel
  15. We've got a few quotes on removals and the general consensus is that we have 1 x 20' container + some excess. One quote reckons about 60 cubic foot excess at a rate of £5.60 per cubic foot. Has anyone heard of a better price for sea freight excess baggage for 60 cubic feet?
  16. Hi all We just had the shippers round ( wahey.. its getting exciting now, as its nearly time to go :v_SPIN: :jiggy:!!!) and we were hoping to ship our stuff out end October and hope to get it all in Oz just before Christmas.............. NO CHANCE apparently, as the foot & mouth situation has put the Ozzie customs in overdrive and they are checking everything really, really, thoroughly and checking/treating/cleaning some things just in case, so obviously all this is taking much longer than usual and its adding another 2-4 weeks on all shipments!! Just thought i'd let you all Know........... Sally-ann x
  17. Hello everyone, and a quick statement/query to all: I've had pretty much of a gutfull here in Britain and have been to the OZ on a working holiday visa (2000) and drove a 'cruiser right around the country (including "Pajinka") etc in 2005. Pretty good! So, I'm looking at retraining in mechanics or maybe welding and reckon that if I train up in Aus in a MODL "in demand" area, then surely I can become eligible for some sort of work visa? I have an Aussie mate who is starting to commute from NSW to WA for mining work 'coz it's going mental over there. I have sent some Queries off to migration agencies, but would very much value some real life experiences from tradespeople out there. Can this be done? Also I have no illusions about how tough it can be out there. Cheers Muppetino
