    Travel Insurance for Older folk

Don't know if anyone can help but my parents would like to come to Oz to visit us ... They are both in their 70s and my Dad has had serious heart issues in the past - consequently they are struggling to find travel / health insurance either at all or for an affordable price .... Is anyone able to recommend any companies or any alternative - eg could we cover them on our health insurance policy - we are PR but they are visitors. Any advice welcome! Thank you!
  2. I think I have sussed out why there are so many more Northern folk in Oz than Southern folk…..It is all to do with your weather, when the Weather comes on it says most of the time….it will be a “North South divide” when refereeing to the weather for the day or the week…Northern territory of England does not get the same weather as the Southern territory of England. So because the Northern parts of England are influenced from the Scandinavian Countries whereas the Southern territory is influenced from the air streams of France and Northern Spain it doe s not take a genius to work out that the Soutern England is warmer and much sunnier than the Northern territory…..and that my friends is the reason there are more North people in Australia than South people. That is my theory and I am sticking to it.
  3. Did anybody call DIAC from Bangladesh? What's the number? I can't reach +61 1300 364 613. Anyone can shed some light?
  4. Currently, I am applying for a student visa, and it is stated by DIAC: ..."Declare on your student visa application that you have access to sufficient funds to cover the same costs for the remainder of your stay. The department officer assessing your application will need to be satisfied that the funds you are relying on will genuinely be available to you during your stay in Australia." Maybe it seems a silly question but please clear the air I'm confused? How and What should I do to assure departmental officer that all my funds will be available to me during my stay in Oz? Any ideas? it would be much appreciated. maybe is there anyone who is in a similar possition please respond???

  6. Hi I don't know if it's of any use but I came across a website called meetup.com which lists loads of different types of social groups, including for younger people. There are pages of them and some of them are er, alternative shall we say, but there does look to be some that look good, so may be worth investigating. We're not in Oz so can't vouch for it but for people who are finding it a bit of a struggle so far socially or just want to get a few more friends may find it useful.
  7. Am I the only one who is sick and tired of of the constant hijacking of interesting and informative threads for the sole purpose of petty squabbling between the same few forum members? I know people from all walks of life, with different points of view and experiences unique to themselves will not always agree.Such is life. However, this is not what I have issue with.I have issue with long standing forum members, who should know better, resorting to personal jibes towards other forum members. It has become a recurrent theme throughout a lot of threads of late, mostly aimed at one or two forum members. I am writing this post to ask all forum members if they could put aside any personal differences or dislikes, even for a few days, just so the rest of us can start enjoying the forum once again. If this is not possible maybe you could resolve your issues by PM or just not respond to each others post at all during the next few days. I do not post this with the intention of putting any noses out of joint,I am simply frustrated with the childish carry-on on some of the forums,CTF and MBTTUK in particular. Maybe I am the only one who feels like this..........then again maybe not.

  9. My wife and I were back in the UK for a few months last year and were shocked at the price of just about everything (except paperback novels). I've been flitting around this forum and someone said that Oz was more expensive than the UK generally speaking. Well generally speaking a tin of Heinz soup here costs between $2 and $3 bucks, whereas in the UK the same tin of soup was on average 2 quid or above. When we were there 2 quid was about $4.45 Oz (Yes we don't have Oxtail soup, pity but it's not that popular here.) Someone also said we don't have the variety of meat that they sell in the UK? We're really wondering about that, as our large supermarkets have just about every kind of meat and combination you care to name. More than we ever saw in a UK supermarket. We don't have a curry house on every corner, but they never really took off here either, but we have plenty of Chinese and Japanese food places. And again they are cheaper than in the UK. We actually realised that the only way to survive long term in the UK is to be paid in British Pounds, anyone trying to live in Britain on an Aussie wage is going to go under pretty quickly, as our dollar was so weak against the pound. A campsite in Oz averages anywhere between $12 and $20 dollars. A campsite in the UK averages all the time at about 19 quid. That was over $40 bucks when we were there. (That's wayyyyy too expensive for what you don't get. No BBQ's. No sun/rain cover. Just a shower and a toilet is all we got at any campsite in the UK, south to north. Many times it's just a spot in a field, campsites here are normally special parks. Although we often just free camp as so much public access land.) Petrol is cheaper here. Family Resteraunts are in the main cheaper. Middle range Motels/hotels are cheaper. B&B is often cheaper, though it's getting more expensive. We don't have any Toby Carvery's...crying shame as we loved Toby's and the price was right. Our local video shop charges $2 a movie for a weekly or an overnight. I'm guessing no vid shops in the UK charge 50 pence a rental? I saw another person say they had trouble finding the clothes they wanted? Once again if you can't find the clothing you want in a big Aussie city then you must be wanting something really special. I don't recall I saw people in the UK dressing much different to us here in Oz? Two things we didn't like in the UK: The McDonalds food tasted funny to us and the crisps were bloody awful compared to the ones we buy here. (Sorry, had to get that off my chest.) Crisps are chips in Oz, by the way. Okay, had my say, interested to see what new arrivals or people who travel between the UK and Oz on a regualr basis think.
  10. We are a married couple (28 and 31) We are relocating to Sydney in 2 weeks time. Its all very scary! But we cant wait to start building our life. We dont know many people over there so are hoping to make friends with similar interests. We are both into metal (heavy underground stuff) but like a lot of rock and punk etc. My husband is a tattooist, so its something we both are really into, although dont think we look supremely scary! We're hoping to rent somewhere in Newtown, get to know the more alternative area.. go to gigs etc. So if you have similar interests, and live in the area, give us a shout! \m/

  14. Hello Hello! Ok, I think I just need to vent and then get some advice or direction. I have just downloaded the ANMC form B for skills assessement--and well, I need a professional reference. There in lies the problem--to get a reference I need to tell my employer that I am applying abroad and that I will be leaving them at some point. That to me is a bit dubious to say the least. I am in a difficult position enough as it is (returning to work after leave and starting a new position). Any ideas out there or am I going to have to lump it and tell them? Furthermore, is my OH going to need this too? He is V senior and they could make life very difficult for him or find a way to fire him (this is true!). Obviously we need the income and the job to get into Oz. Please help!
