  11. Hi all i'm hoping someone who has made the move to oz,may be able to shed some light on making new friends, we read somewhere that the agency you go with for imergration can help you find contact places and get togethers once you have settled down in your new home, In the uk stay at home mums contacts are mostly through schools, and workers in the work place! or failing that neighbours etc, are australians that easy to befriend for our sakes as well as our childrens, or does it depend on the areas you live, any information would be good cheers john:chatterbox:
  12. Hi just joined this site and im coming over to melbourne on the 15th of march to get an idea of which area i would like to call home! im hopefully looking to speak to a few poeple in the flooring trade to get an idea of how things work and how i would get started. i know it takes upto 18 months to get a visa but with melbourne being a huge place. i dont want to go there with no idea of how things work and which areas are nice! Im a fully qualified carpet fitter (23 YRS EXP) and at moment fit mostly the top end of the market jobs ie. nourison, border work and durafit for a company in sheffield (who can provide an excellent ref) i also fit vinyls and amtico. is there any one out there who could point me in the right direction or if not in the trade just give me a few tips for when i come over? yours sincerley john
  13. Hello We have just joined the forum, so please excuse my ignorance on things! We are looking at going to Oz for 2 to 3 years initially and see how we feel after that. Luckily we can afford to keep our house here and rent it out so we don't loose our foot on the property ladder here in the UK. We have 3 kids 7, 4 and 1. My husband is a gas engineer and has his corgi, he has done this for 5 years now. He also did his 4 year City and Guilds apprenticeship in plumbing when he left school - 16 years ago. When I spoke to the agent yesterday, he said that my husbaand will have to use his plumbing apprenticeship for the Visa process and that he will have to go to London to sit an exam! My hubby is worried about the exam process, could anyone tell us what it is all about and what he would be tested on - he has not done plumbing as such since he left his apprenticeship and would rather sit exams on Gas fitting etc since that is waht he does for a living. Any info or advice would be greatly recieved. Thanks Viks
  14. Hi everyone, My Hubby is a Gas Fitter and we are hoping to go to Oz in April. All visas are completed and we are just waiting for the sale of the house. Does anyone know if there is much call for Gas fitters in Oz? And do they have to do exams when they arrive? If so what does it involve? We were planning on Adelaide but if there is more call for jobs somewhere else we can change our minds on the place we go. Thanks John & Sue:twitcy:
  15. Hi Dave has been a window fitter and home improvement chappy for about 8 years now and we have been granted a visa on his carpentry skills. He doesn't want to do site work, he hates that environment. He much prefers the personal nature of working on people's homes and meeting different people - he also prefers the window etc side of things. Does anyone have any idea what job opps would be like in the Melbourne area for this kind of thing? I think he ought to do sales as he can charm the birds out of the trees - we still receive Christmas cards from his clients from years ago!! Cheers for any advice.
  16. hi i am moving near the gold coast hopefully next year is anyone on this site a carpet fitter who is doing the same thing?? Donovan
