a career as a cab driver a go. It was both the funniest and worse job I've ever done, and I’ve done a few. Some of the punters would come up with all sorts of clever ways to rip you off. This was the best of the lot though. So one day I get sent to this house and the note on the job screen says "Man in wheelchair needs assistance." So I pull up at this address and this skinny, sorrowful looking geezer with twisted looking limbs is waiting in his wheelchair by the front door. I get out of the car and go into his garden and he says, "Would you be so kind as to wheel me over, I’m so sorry to be a nuisance. So I say "No problem." As I'm wheeling him over he keeps repeating "Please forgive me, you really are too kind, it is most generous of you." I push him over to the front passenger side door and open it and again he says "Oh I do hate to be a nuisance but would you be so kind enough to lift me in." So I put my arms under his skinny twisted legs and lift him into the car and again he says “Oh you are so kind, too kind, most kind of you, where would I be without Gent's such as yourself." So I close his door and fold his chair up and take it to the boot, lift the boot and put the chair in and when I close the boot.........My car turns into a drag racer starts burning rubber and leaves tyre marks on the road. As I stand in the road like midnight half struck with my dopey mouth open my first thought is "How the hell does he operate the pedals." And as it slowly dawns on me I can’t suppress a grin as I realise he has taken me for a proper Charlie, a right Mr Confused. Fair play to him, Daniel Day Lewis's Oscar winning performance in 'My left foot' was nothing compared to this tea leafs. What with The twisted legs and trembling arms, he was good! The coolness of it, to wait till I opened the boot so I couldn't see him switch seats and then also wait for me to put his wheelchair in and close the boot , well it was as calm as you like. He pulled this con on a few cab drivers all over London. I lost my wallet and phone but got my car back two weeks later. He was right though I was "So kind, to kind, most kind."
  2. Just wanted to put the question out... has anyone on PIO gone all through the gruelling visa application process and fallen at the last hurdle because they failed the medical ? Ive not read anywhere on here of that happening but im in serious panik mode as we have ours next friday and im worried my OH will fail.
  3. Hi all, hoping someone with experience may be able to offer some impartial advice - as I seem have ended up in a fix with the immigration clock well and truly ticking.... I've been here in QLD Australia for over 2 years now and have really found myself at home - I love it.I 'm a professional graphic and web designer with a background in the IT industry and motortrade in the UK -I also have a degree. I orginally entered the country on a working holiday visa, I then extended this for a second year as I liked it so much here. I received a job offer before this second working holiday VISA expired which met the salary and job type stipulations set out by immigration - so I put in an application for a 457 temporary business sponsored VISA and my potential employer applied to be a sponsor. I was put onto a bridging VISA class E due to the VISA system starting my 2nd year working holiday VISA before the 1st had ended when I re-entered Australia after a short trip abroad (holiday) so ended up staying here unlawfully for 48 hours accidentally. I myself have not heard anything back from immigration since lodging my application, but I was advised by the sponsor that he received back a letter today saying his side of the application had been refused, as he was not suitable to be a sponsor (his business is very small). Bascially, what are my options? How long have I got? Is my only option getting married to stay here legally now? I do have a long term partner but I hadn't planned on getting married just yet....I am determined to stay here as I have a life, friends and work here - the idea of being forced back to the UK is my worst nightmare. Any help, advice or thoughts really, really appreciated.

    Fallen For a Perth Girl

Hi all, I'm off to Perth on the 26th of June on a working visa to be close to my girl going be living in the Joondalup area I would just like to know how easy are the jobs to come by there and also places with shared accommodation, I wont be moving straight in with her as she has a 6 year old daughter so it will be a good couple of months whilst she gets used to me being around. Any help appreciated, Thanks.
  6. Hello In all the time I've spend looking at living in Australia I never ever considered that New Zealand might be more like our perfect destination and I'm quite excited by the prospect! Thanks to the most recent series of Wanted Down Under that's just finished in the UK and the research I've been doing online I think our family would be best suited to AUCKLAND or HAWKES BAY (mainly because of I'm fed up of rain and no summer so the South Island might be just a bit too like England!). I was worried Oz would be too hot in the summer. We don't cope well in too much heat so the New Zealand cooler summers teamed with the option of skiing in winter sounds just wonderful. I'm going on a bit now, sorry, but just wanted to express my thoughts and wonder if anyone has experienced this change in direction. Can anyone tell me what it's really like living and working in Auckland and Hawkes Bay? Thanks for listening. Jo x

    I have fallen in love...

.. with Brisbane and surrounding areas!! Hubby and I went out to Brisbane on November 6th staying in Singapore for a day and a half going out and overnight on the way home. We flew with Singapore airlines who were great despite the fact that my headphone socket didn't work and I am not a keen flyer it went really quickly. Food was fine, lots of drinks brought regularly so no dehydration and Hubby who is 6'3 had no problem in the economy seats which was a huge relief. Arriving in Singapore we stayed at the Hotel Clark Quay. Lovely hotel and Singapore is lovely and clean but I must admit it wasn't my cup of tea and wouldn't stay for any length of time again. Staying at the airport hotel on the way back was fantastic, clean, reasonably priced and the airport has more than enough to do. Arriving at Brisbane we were overtired and not too impressed at the coachtrans system. Out B&B had booked it for us, we had travelled through 2 countries on reference numbers yet when we got there we had to queue for 30 minutes to check in whilst the person in front booked excursions for their entire holiday. We were then told we needed the vouchers to get aboard despite the fact that it was booked and paid for by someone in brisbane and we had passports to prove it was for us. Eventually we got to the B&B which was situated in New Farm. New farm was perfect- a short cat ride into the city, beatuiful in itself. The travel ticket for the week at 10 quid a head was worth it's weight in gold. The journey on the boat over to the city on that first night blew me away. I hate cities but this city is stunning! It actually brought a tear to my eye. We visited mountains, waterfall, little villages, went to a fantastic place called Landsborough and had a mighty fine meal in the 3 divas cafe which is attached to a spiritual shop. We travelled up as far as Noosa heads, a stunning place, travelling via the mountains, maleny and the forest. We travelled south to the gold coast via tamborine national park and mount tamborine. Landing in Surfers paradise was a shock to the system and definately not for me however the rest of the entire trip was seeing some of the most beautiful places ever. People were so so friendly and there was a peaceful, welcoming feeling everywhere we went. I have never felt like I belonged anywhere but I swear I felt like I was home. It wasn't all glam- the B&B was not nice, getting stuck in rush hour traffic during an unbelievably heavy rainstorm with thunder and lightening weren't pleasant but even then, the people drove sensibly compared to here, the storm did it's thing and cleared the air. We were lucky to meet up with some friends that live there and they introduced us to some fantastic people too who welcomed us and encouraged us to make the move. Hand on heart I can say that I would move there in a flash and Hubby loved it too. He doesn't want to move so far away right now though. His parents are elderly and not too well and he feels that if we leave he'll be saying goodbye forever. We'll be making plans though because Brisbane far exceeded our hopes and expectations. I am so jealous of those of you there and those of you moving out soon - my turn one day
  8. But they are likely to start rising again soon, analysts say, driven higher by increased interest rates and an employment market that appears to be stabilising...... Really? Conversely, according to Chris Martin Policy Officer at the Tenancy union of NSW: "Also, depictions of a housing shortage were overblown. ''We have 830,000 unoccupied dwellings in this country,'' he said" What the real estate market does not tell you, nor want buyers to know, is the huge amount of property that owners may want to sell but cannot, or are waiting till later to, sell...accordingly it has been suspected that the real estate industry is trying to limit supply of properties coming onto the market, to maintain sales, auction clearance rates and prices.
  9. GBP/AUD is currently at the lowest levels seen since 1996. Sterling has fallen significantly in value because its yield (interest rates) has fallen to 0.50% and the BoE have pumped a huge amount of money into the economy, further undermining its value. The UK economy is also in dire straits with rising unemployment and a housing market on the verge of collapse. But it’s not all doom and gloom people! Contrastingly, the Australian economy has actually weathered the global economic storm quite well and is only experiencing a very shallow recession; the number of people employed actually went up last month! Australian interest rates are still high compared to other OECD countries and are also expected rise more quickly than the UK. Thus, Australia’s better economic position, exposure to emerging economies and its attractive yield have resulted in a significant appreciation of the Australian Dollar against Sterling. This is certainly a good thing for those of you looking to send funds back to the UK. For those that aren’t and are actually looking to bring Sterling to Australia, now might be a good time to protect yourself from the rate going against you further, by taking out a ‘forward contract’ – basically locking in today’s rate for payment at a future date. Make sure you discuss the benefits of a forward contract with your currency provider, as they can be a very useful tool to not only protect you from adverse rate movements, but also give you peace of mind in knowing that your rate has been locked in. Feel free to contact Currency Online to discuss how to best manage your currency needs. Kind Regards, Jon Speedy Currency Online – Moving Money Made Easy
  10. :arghh: Hi A few weeks ago we saw a house that we liked in Melbourne. It was up for auction. 2 weeks before the auction the vendor accepted our offer of $450k. We had pest and building inspections ($1000k) It was a verbal agreement as we had to wait for the new build policy to come through from the solicitor (vendors) so we were told. He then decided to go to auction!!! The first bid was $300k then before we could give ours someone shouted out $500k. End of auction. We went home disappointed! To our surprise the next day (sunday) the estate agent called to say that the person did not have the money and that if we gave a deposit and signed a contract that we could get the property. We got a banks draft for the deposit and signed the contract. The vendors name was typed not signed. The cheque was banked. However, on the Thursday, we had a call from the agent to say the sale was of as the man at the auction now had finance. So that's it! We were very naive that we did not get a solicitor involved as it was all a 'bit in the air' and that it now appears that the contract was not really a contract as it was not signed by the vendor. It has all the details on it stating that we will be moving in 60 days etc. I am so disappointed! Just a little reminder for everyone to be aware and get advice. I just feel a bit conned by the agent. We have not received the cheque yet for our deposit. The agent states it was posted last week! We will see. I was just wondering if anyone else has had any experience of this? it is so difficult not really knowing about the Austrailian Real Estate. I will definately be more careful in future! Just getting this off my chest!!

First they said can you drop your price..we said .NO... then they said 'whatever happens we want your house'... 'we want your house so will will get it sorted'.. we said .. OKEY, WE asked them can we have confirmation on your mortgage so we can put our name down on a rented property (otherwise we stuck with rented plus mortgage) for next 6 months..!!! got our solictor involved, he has heard... NOTHING!! SOOOO back to the story (sorry I go on abit) now the buyers are saying some right cock and bull story about their own house, weve had enough so its going back on the market .... at least we can stay in our home abit longer, if nothing else that makes me feel abit more relaxed... Fallen at the first hurdle

After a conversation with Marina at Go Matilda - Your Gateway to Australia - Visa, Tax and Financial Planning for Australia (very helpful lady), I've GOT to have Employer sponsorship to get in as 14 years experience in sales isn't enough without a bit of paper Anybody got any contacts with Telstra/Optus? (a rather deflated) Bones.

  18. Hi all I have just been checking out the TRA Skills Assessment form and although hubby is an air conditioning engineer, he has no formal qualifications - all experienced based. However, he has only been doing it for 4 years and looking at what he needs, it appears to be 6 years. Please can someone confirm that I'm reading it right. Otherwise I could be putting off applying for 2 years for no reason. Thank you
