Down Under Live Expo - Help!!

I am planning a move to Australia with my family in the next 2 years so I thought it might be helpful to go to the 'Down Under Live' migration expo in Birmingham this weekend. I just had a rather bizarre experience! I phoned the Down Under Live 'hotline' to ask which exhibitors will be there this weekend as I wanted to know if any will relate to us. That seems a fairly reasonable enquiry to me! The guy on the phone was really evasive/defensive and wouldn't give me any information at all. He said he thought I was from a "rival exhibition company trying to find out what was going on at their expo". When I said I just wanted to know what was going on at the exhibition before spending £15 per ticket and travelling a long distance he said "I don't really understand why you want to know" and got quite assertive. Eventually he said there would be 25 stands, but refused to say what any of them would be. I was only asking for an exhibitors list to decide whether a visit would be worthwhile, I wasn't asking for the guys personal bank details for god's sake!! It rang a bit of an alarm bell that it might be an utter waste of our time - potentially a 2hr drive to visit a few people behind folding tables trying to sell removal services etc. Hrm, strange! Can anybody help with advice: Are you going? have you been before and was it worthwhile? Is this unhelpful turd in customer services a reflection of a Mickey Mouse expo/event? Thanks, all advice greatly appreciated.

Hi All, Just wanted a bit of advice about Expos. My OH is in IT and attended DIAC expo in September- complete waste of time as IT recruiters werent there! There is an expo advertised (£15) in Manchester this month with IT listed as recruiters being there. We are looking for sponsorship so do people think its worth going or will it be for people who have visa's?? Anyone had any luck at the expos? Thanks

    Oz Expos: worth a visit?

Was looking at some old threads and noticed a couple of people who mentioned going to expos here in england. Did a quick google search and found a couple which we could go to. My question is whether people who have been to them think it is worthwhile? We have our visas granted and are going to be leaving here in March 2011. I reckon we're pretty clued up on stuff but certainly wouldn't presume to know everything (well nearly everything, I am a teacher after all:wink:). So in people's experience are they worth checking out???

Are the Migration Expos worth it or are they just a hard sell thing. Will we spend the entire time saying no we already have an agent and no we dont want to buy/rent any property as yet? Sorry but still vividly remember a timeshare afternoon!

    Expos- Bricky Advice Please Read

If any brickies out there thinking of emigrating can get to one of the expos being held in the UK, do! My husband attended one in Manchester in 2006, the Australia Needs Skills Expo, and registered his details with a representative from the ABBTF- Australian Brick and Blocklaying Federation. They offered to help brickies migrate under the skilled visa route, AND offered to re-imburse his visa cost of $2000 when he had been working as a brickie in Oz for three months. Well, after working on the Gold Coast for three months, Richard applied, and recieved a cheque for $2000 from them this week, after filling in a few details on a form, and getting his employer to sign it. This was only any good if you had registered with the ABBTF before getting your visa. We applied for our visa in June 2006, but didn't register with them until October 2006, and still got the payment. Another guy working here in a similar position, but who hadn't ever spoken to them, was not eligible, SO PLEASE GO AND REGISTER!!!! I know there's one coming up in London soon. I'm not sure if they are still doing it, but it was only a couple of weeks ago we got our application in. If you contact the ABBTF, find their details on Google, they can let you know. Jo

Hi All, I have just discovered that there is more than one "expo" I am off to one in London on the 15th Oct at the Australian High Commision, Australia House, which I had to fill in forms for and be invited to, and is free to attend. I have just clicked a link on this web page about the expo, thinking it was the expo I am going to, to discover its something else on a different date at Earls Court, and costs £10 entrance fee?! I would love to hear from anyone who has been to either or maybe even both. Was it useful? Did anyone make contact with people that ultimately landed in a job offer? Many Thanks Pea,x
