    Australian Event Awards

[WRAP]http://www.pomsinoz.com/images/stage6.jpg[/WRAP]The Tour Down Under cycling race has been named the Australia's Event of the Year, beating Oprah Winfrey's Ultimate Australian Adventure and Melbourne's Formula One Grand Prix for top honours. The world Protour cycling race in South Australia also won recognition as the Best Tourism Event for the third year in a row, at the Australian Event Awards in Sydney. Acting SA Tourism Minister John Hill said the cycling event's latest wins were an outstanding achievement. "The Tour Down Under continues to go from strength to strength," he said. "Last night's award is confirmation of the quality of the event and the esteem in which it is held across Australia and internationally." He says this year's cycling event had a record crowd estimated at 780,000 lining the route and achieved hundreds of hours of television coverage. Elsewhere, other winners included: Best New Event - City of Melbourne for Melbourne Music, an inaugural festival of great diversity that activated major live music venues and included over 100 free concerts. Best Sporting Event- Australian Open 2011 - Tennis Australia Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event - Sydney Festival 2011 Best Community Event - Tropfest 2011 - Splendid Communications and Tropfest Events Best Regional Event - Tasmania's Ten Days on the Island

    CGT event in the UK

I am a dual citizen UK/AUS and have some shares in the UK that I have now sold at a sizeable capital gain. Theses shares have all been held for ~8 years. I become a permanent resident in 2007 so many years of holding the shares were as a temp resident. Questions: 1. This is clearly a CGT event under the ATO definition. Is the CG calculation based on the purchase price or the price in 2007 when I became a PR (I know there are CGT differences for temp residents)? I'm aware I can 50% discount the CG as I've held them >12 months. 2. Does the CG have to be declared in UK or just my Aus return as I've done for all other UK interest in recent years? It always amazes me that tax I pay on a profit generating asset in the UK funds the Australia government rather than the UK government!
