  1. Hi everyone, We arrived in Melbourne yesterday! We have car hire till next week but it's quite expensive and we need to think about buying a car. Are we able to get finance? We have around a $400 deposit? Is anyone else in this situation? Also, are we entitled to any medical care at all on a 457 visa? Thank you in advance for your help. Alex :jiggy:

    Maternity entitlements

Hi everyone, I'm in the very early planning stages of emigrating so have lots and lots to think about. My partner and I are in our late 20's and both work for the emergency services in Manchester UK (Paramedic and Firefighter). I have managed to find out alot about the whole process online and speaking to a contact in Perth. Our dilemma though is regarding children. Do we start a family in the UK or wait till OZ?? I apprecaite this is a very personal dilemma and only we can decide when the best time is to have a child. Does anybody have any information regarding maternity leave/benefits? As this may influence our decision? As they say my clock is ticking! Given that we will probably be emigrating on my profession (Paramedic) I cant really go on maternity leave soon after starting a new job in a new country. Also asuming i can sponsorship how long does the process take? Any information is very much appreciated Thanks CJA
  3. Hi Everyone Doing the whole research thing each night ahead of our anticipated move to Perth next year. Have got the state sponsorship, I'm a Plasterer and OH is a Beautician. I' planning to work full time and OH part time. We have 2 boys, one aged 9 and a 6 month old baby boy. We are a bit confused about the whole child care thing. I know that if we get the visa then the 9 yr old is entitled to free schooling. However what is the story with child care for the baby for example. we have read that you can receive assistance from the govt. Also on the same page we read that if you have kids here you get paid a baby bonus. The confusing thing we are finding is that we thought that migrants were not entitled to anything when they moved here until after a period of 2 years. Any replies or help would be greatly appreciated:smile:
  4. Hi, I'm new to this forum and wonder if anybody can help. Moved from the Uk about a year and a half ago to OZ permanently. My partner tried for a year a get her tax refunded from the UK, however to no avail, I did, and she has given up on trying. I have read with interest that it is possible to continue to pay towards NI, in order to receive at the ripe old age of 60. As we still own a house in England and declare this to the tax man in the UK (albeit an interest only mortgage) are we entitled to anything back from the UK government? We have both worked for 20 years and contributed Income Tax & NI. A bitter taste has been left in our mouths due to the fact my partner has not received her tax refund! Furthermore is there a company/website that you can contact to see if you have any remaining money/savings/pensions policies owed to you? Thanks

    Maternity entitlements??

Hi, We have recently moved to Melbourne and I have got a 1 year contract in a Government school rolling on after the 1 year to a permanent contract (all being well). We were hoping to start a family soon and I was wondering if anyone knew if I would be entitled to maternity pay/leave and how much it is? Any advice gratefully accepted Maz and Nick
  6. Please can someone tell me if i'm entitled to medicare and centrelink benefits if i have WA sponsorship?? I thought i wasn't entitled to anything for 2 years, but now i have all my paperwork and everything approved.. it doesn't say anything about it now?? Thanks!
  7. I'm 52 and been in Oz since 79 and because of the upcoming changes to the UK pension it looks like I qualify for a 100% pension. It has always been a concern of mine since the Oz pension was means tested that I might not get a full pension due to the odd investment etc. As from next year to qualify for a full UK pension you only have to have 30 years contributions, it presently stands at 44 years. Because you are allowed to back date contributions to the National Insurance scheme you can increase the pension due to you. They don't volounteer this information. I was allowed to back pay 11 years which, if I continue to make the annual payment of between 400 and 500 pounds, I will get a full UK pension at 65 without means testing. Even after you turn 65 you can continue to contribute for a couple of years depending on your circumstances. The UK pensions association in Oz were very helpful and put me straight on quite a few points, because initially the Poms told me I wasn't entitled to much at all. You can join them for only $20 a year, and anyone who worked for as little as one year in the UK can qualify. At the moment they're fighting the UK government regarding indexation of the pension and although they lost a case in the EC of Human Rights they have pooled their resources with the Canadian and S African equivalent of Poms in the these countries. The appeal will be held in September and is a case worth supporting. The association contact details are - British Pensions in Australia Good luck, Syd

    457 entitlements

Hi We're wondering as going to Aus on a 457 visa, would we be entitled to any child benefits? As we're going to beliving on one wage until veryone is settled and bought 2 cars. Are we entitled to any kids of family benefit or is it reserved for people with PR? Am I correct in thinking we'll need to pay to have our 2 boys educated? Or does this depend on which school we send them to? Any help/advice please

    457 Visa and medical entitlements

Hi all I am really confused! Can anyone advise me please with regardto medicare and being on a 457 visa. To be specific I am an asthmatic and have monthly prescriptions. How do I access these whilst in Oz? I know the uk has a reciprocal agreement for emergency treatment but how does asthma fit into this? what sort of costs will I incur and could it be covered by insurance? What sort of insurance would people recommend? Do I need to get a letter from my GP with regard to my treatment or will it be enough to describe what I usually have giving the generic names? I have been on the medicare site and emailed them but not received a reply. Hope someone can advise thanks in anticipation :wubclub:
