    Primary Schools Melbourne

Hi, I am moving to Melbourne in June 2017 with my husband and two children (7 & 4). My husband will be working in Bundoora. We have been looking into living within areas approx. 20 km from his work place...Eltham, Templestowe, Research, Diamond Creek etc... I am hoping for some local knowledge and recommendation of the local schools (they all look good online). We are moving from a small east coast village in Scotland and from a primary school with approx 100 pupils, therefore a smaller school would be desirable. Any local knowledge on the different suburbs would be greatly received. Thanks.
  2. I'm 28 years old and living in Eltham. I've met lots of lovely people in the CBD and have one friend in Greensborough. I'd love to make more friends who live locally, please post if you'd like to join in on a meet up for a glass of wine! Tina
  3. What are people's opinions the above? Are there any particular upsides/downsides? We would basically like a house with a garden, 2/3 bedrooms within an hour of the CBD with good transport links for c$350pw (there is just the two of us (both 30), no kids (yet!)). I have read that Ferntree Gully is a fire risk area, but would like to know if anyone has had experience of there actually being any fires/how much of a daily risk it is. Seen a beautiful house in Upper FTG with amazing views for $320 pw but no doubt it will be long gone before we arrive in January. Cheers in advance - any other suggestions of good suburbs most welcome! x

    Eltham or Point Cook

We've just been granted our visa, so need to arrange a visit to activate, but don't know where to start! When we visited Melbourne a few years ago, we visited Eltham and really liked it, but have started to look on line at various other places and now considering Point Cook, as its quite reasonably priced. Any input would be appreciated. Also, would anyone have any thoughts about renting/buying - is it better to rent short-term? Do you have to be in Australia for a certain amount of time before you can get a mortgate? Does house insurance tend to be quite high? We have a 3 year old daughter, so schools etc will have an influence over where we decide. There's no much to consider now, we just don't know where to start!

    Eltham Vic

Does anyone live in Eltham - whats it like in terms of commute to CBD. Is transport good as I don't drive. It looks nice and green and very spacious but I need an area with lots of kid stuff, good primary schools and don't want to feel isolated - Is this place ok?:chatterbox:

    Berwick or Eltham?

Hi again, Sorry for another post from me - I was just wondering what experiences people had of living in either Berwick or Eltham please? I'm moving out with my husband and young son (3) at the end of May. We've looked around both Berwick and Eltham but only briefly - you can only learn so much about an area in a couple of hours. Are there any particularly good and bad points about each town? We're looking for an area that feels quite rural, is under an hour on the train from CBD and is safe and family-friendly. Thanks ever so much for any help anyone can provide! Suzanne. x
  7. Thought if anyone was looking for an event for the kids on this long weekend, the Diamond Valley mini railway is having a 'Spooky night train' for the kids on Sunday 13th March. :arghh:Diamond Valley Railway Home Page, Eltham,Victoria,Australia
  8. Hi all, I'm a newbie to this forum lark so forgive me if I get things wrong, but I wonder if anyone could help me with a couple of questions please? We are moving to the Melbourne area at the end of May with our 3 year old son. We are considering renting a house in either Eltham or Berwick - does anyone know what these areas are like in terms of family activities, safety, etc? We've looked around both, but obviously you can't get much of an idea about a place in an hour or two. The second question is how easy will we find it to rent a house, ie what sort of references and paperwork will we need? As we will only just have arrived from the UK obviously we won't have any previous rental history in Oz, but we will have things like bank statements, employers' references (my OH already has a job) etc - will that suffice? Thanks ever so much for any help you can offer! Suzanne. x

    Commute Eltham to Melbourne CBD

Hi, can anyone advise on what the commute is like into the CBD from Eltham and how long roughly would it take. Also is the area mixed between old and new properties or does it tend to be either/or. Also would like to know if there are plenty of open spaces and park areas to walk the dog and ride bikes. Any help would be appreciated. Debbie xxx
  11. Hi All Making the big move in September with family. 3 kids under 7 so any recommendations for the plane journey greatly appreciated!:arghh: . This forum has been a great help even if it has sent me on an emotional rollercoaster! I've read posts that make me think OMG what have I done, and others that make me think best decision ever. I guess we will have to wait and see and accept that it will be what we make it. I will be working in Hawthorn and my Wife is down for a reccie next week to look at potential places to live. From reading this forum and depending on choices of "sea or not sea" we are thinking of the extremes of Beaumaris/Cheltenham in the South or Eltham in the North. I wondered could anyone advise what commuting times from Eltham to Hawthorn or Beaumaris/Cheltenham to Hawthorn would be. Tinternet suggests 40 minutes but is this realistic. Aim would be to be in work by 8:00am Also any views on Eltham and Beaumaris/Cheltenham would be much appreciated. Thanks Gaz
  12. Hi everyone, My family and i finally made it to Australia, Eltham Victoria and just wondered if there were any poms in a similar position in a similar area that may meet up as part of a group etc. We are loving being here so far but miss a social scene and it would be good to meet others in a similar boat - in our early 30's with a little boy of 2. Any advice on integrating further would be hugely appreciated! kind regards Ben

    whats wrong with Eltham

Hi All , can anyone give me some information on Eltham, we have read the doc where to live in Melbourne (but feel this info maybe a bit dated) recently and feel that this seems to be a safe suburb with good schools, however when searching on forum for more info there is not much chat about eltham. Most expats seem to either be on the west coast or east, is there a specific reason that most people choose to settle in those areas? All info would be appreciated.
