  1. Hi can anyone help me please? I am a qualified primary school teacher in the UK which was gained through the GTP which I know is not recognised in Australia. I am moving out there next year as my family and I have visa's which we obtained through my husbands line of work. However, I would still like to teach when we move over there and understand that I will need to do another course similiar to the PGCE. I have also been told that possibly some of the content of my degree may not be recognised! Has anyone experienced this problem? Does anyone know exactly what I need to do and how much this is going to cost me when I get to Australia?
  2. First post from a newbie here so hope I am using the correct section for this question. My husband is a helicopter pilot and we hope to move to Oz with our young son. At the moment we are struggling to find out what we need to do to facilitate this move. We are waiting on a couple of agents to get back to us (they have requested the info from CASA) but wondered if any of you knowledgable PIO's had any idea. My husband has a UK license and we had hoped that he would be able to convert this once we had the visa but both agents approached so far have said that they think the Australian License needs to be done before a visa application. CASA have not updated their website since pilot was added to the SOL so there is no info there. At a cost of approx £6000 to convert the license with no idea if you will indeed be granted a visa seems a bit harsh. Perhaps being new to all this we are not being realistic about the costs, time and hoop hopping required to make our dream a reality. Any advice/experiences shared appreciated.
  3. Hi, My wife and daughter and myself are moving to Sydney/Central Coast next yr. I am a financial advisor in the UK and will be looking to do the same in Oz and I understand that I will have to convert my qualifications. Has anyone got any advice about moving to Oz and working within the financial industry? I am qualified as a mortgage broker and have all my CF exams and will have my diploma when we come over. Thanks for any help
  4. Good evening ladies & gents, i wonder if you could possibly help me with a little dilemma? Now before you start saying i am dozy and such like, i will fully agree with you before hand :cute: I blame myself for not buying the very valuable kitchen gadget whilst in Australia!! But can someone please give me the conversions for cup measurements, into basic ounces or grammes, oh and fluid ounces, or if you know of a web link, i have found two but they both say different  so is Australian and American cups different is my next question :wubclub: Many thanks x
  5. Hi everyone, Im asking this question for a family member that is thinking of emigrating to WA. She is a mental health nurse here in the UK & has been for around 10 years. She is wondering whether she would need to convert her qualification into an Australian qualification if they were to move? This worries her as she would obviously want to start earning straight away. Also her husband is a plumber & she already knows that he would need to get a licence to work as a plumber in Australia. If anyone knows anything about this I would really appreciate some advisE so I can pass it on. Also if she would have to do a conversion does anyone know how long this would take?, whether its hard? & how much it costs? Thanks in advance. Hayley

  7. Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me? I am here on a 457 with wife and two kids. My 457 doesn't expire until May 2013, however we are considering applying for permanent residence before that date. My son will be 18 next August and I was wondering if it would be easier to apply for permanence before he reaches 18. I have read that over 18s (even if dependent) have to apply separately. He is in full time education now but plans to take a gap year before going to Uni. Does this means he may not be considered as being in FT education if we applied during that time? Any information would be really useful. Thanks
  8. Dear all, after my somewhat inflamattory post was last closed, I decided to get on with life and have (hopefully) a valid question to ask everyone. at the start of the year (january 4th) all my hard work on applying to the ACS for an RPL (work in IT) paid off and I got a positive Assessment (as ASCO 2231-79 unix specialist) which was great as it was on the old CSL. Unfortunately my Emigration company didnt move fast enough and things started to change and chance was missed. Now that the new system is in place and the ANZSCO rules the nest (along with the SMP's slowly trickly out) I find myself with a Positive assessment that doesnt do me any great favours (as trying to go down the route of a 176 Family Sponsored Visa) and need my code to be on schedule 3. Do the ACS offer a service (baring in mind my assessment only has under 2 months to go before running out) where I can put in for re-assessment to move the ASCO code to a more beneficial ANZSCO code? (I have emailed ACS but I know their answers can be rather confusing most of the time and usually just pop in a few weblinks)? Any info greatly appreciated as if I can get my ACS stuff sorted then I dont have too many worries. Kind regards
  9. Does anyone know of any training courses I can take (probably by correspondence) to learn about australian tax and accountancy rules before leaving the UK? I'm a UK qualified chartered accountant and already have PR so I don't need this to get a visa but purely for my own interest. I'm looking for a Financial Controllership type role (which is what I do over here) but would like to know the differences in my job between here and Oz before I go.
  10. Hi folks. I have a partner visa which is temporary at the moment and due for conversion later this month. Has anyone got any idea how long it takes to get the permanent residency visa? I've started collecting my evidence for proof of an ongoing relationship to help speed things up, warned the Australian rellies that we will need statutory declarations and downloaded the Police check forms. its probably best not to do too much until I get the paperwork from Immigration. I don't think there will be a problem getting the visa but I hope that they are pretty quick, as I have had a lot of trouble getting a permanent job. I'm on short term contracts at the moment but you never know how long these will last or if jobs will be avaiilable. I've had a lot of interviews for jobs but I suspect that my temp visa status is affecting my ability to get a permanent job. I had an interview last week for my dream job and just hope I'm not turned down because of this again. Cheers

457 conversion to PR - time frame ?

Good day We moved over to Oz on an employer sponsored 457 visa (as my husband and myself both failed the skills testing). We have now been on this visa since arriving 22nd Aug 2007. I started work early Sep and then after nearly a year - my husband's company did the 457 visa for us and I continued to work for the same company but part time so I had better hours for taking care of my school aged son. My husband has been with his current employer since Oct 2007 and we want to apply for PR. He is in finance and I am worried about the current climate and heard a lot of horror stories, most recently the family in Adelaide that were forced to return to the UK on their 457 visa when she was made redundant. We have bought a house here now and have a very small mortgage on this, so financially we are very stable. I work part time in administration and he is an accountant full time. Can anyone advise when would be the best time to start applying for PR. His employer is willing to sign this off with the agent now already but the agent feels we can only start applying in Oct and not before. We ofcourse want to be certain, but reading this forum, it seems ages for medicals and police checks to come through so are these not things we could start doing now already as well as getting the application in to start processing? Chances are, I think, it would not be processed even by Oct and thus we would still fall into that 2 year time frame. Or would Immigration throw it out if it was a couple of months earlier ? Can anyone advise us ? We love it here so much and are determined to obtain our PR. I have read some people applied as soon as they arrived on their 457 and obtained this after 8 months and others not, so would really appreciate some assistance... please...
