  2. Hi Everyone, Can anyone let me know of any civil engineering contractors based in and around Perth. Ideally a contractor that does a lot of water and waste water treatment projects. I'm a Senior QS with a BSc (Hons) and 13 years experience in the industry. Life in Oz looks great so if I can find the right opportunity I'll be there. I'd appreciate any feedback, I'd particularly like to hear from any civils QS's who've already made to move. Thanks ScottyD :yellow_guy_smiling_

    Car finance for contractors

My husband has been IT contracting for the last 17 years. He has a 6 month contract for a mining company but all they do is contracts in 6 month increments, which is fine by us. But we were hoping to buy a new car and not clear out all of our savings considering the exchange rate. He has been talking with a car broker that was recommended my a friend of his and she in turn spoke with a finance broker and they said they won't even consider him given that his contracts will only ever be in 6 month increments and it is too much risk. They actually told him to go back to his employer and ask for an extension. They obviously don't understand how contracting works. He has been told this position will go on for several years but of course they cannot guarantee that. Does this sound right? We have had large mortgages before with only contracts with 6 months guaranteed work. Would it be better to speak directly with a dealer or are we going about this the wrong way?
  4. Hi, I am an electrician in the UK and am looking for an electrical company to sponsor my visa. I am interested in living in Melbourne/Mornington area and was wondering if anybody knows of any large electrical contractors locally?? I'd also be interested in hearing from people who have gone over on a employer sponsored visa as I would like to know how the process works. And finally does anybody know how much AUD$ would a industrial/commercial electrician earn annually? Many Thanks Ricky (I also posted this in the Victoria section)

  6. Hi, I'm moving over in a couple of weeks and luckily have an initial 6 month contract lined up at what looks like a decent rate. The agency I'm working through is offering to pay me PAYE and have sent me figures which line up with normal tax. Do contractors in Australia generally work PAYE? I've had a LTD company in the UK for years and there are tax advantages to be had by doing so but these look much more limited in Australia, can I structure any other benefit from contracting in Australia (company car, home office, deffered income etc?). I know I'll need to get professional advice but as I'm starting all over again any pointers would be great. Thanks, Mike
  7. First post of what I hope to be many as my OH and I are currently half way through the recruitment process with Leighton Contractors who have been on a recruitment drive in the UK for Rail Engineers and Managers (via Hays Global Recruitment) Has anyone else out there any experience of moving over to Aus either with Leightons' or another company on a sponsored work visa? Just intersted how the process worked and the work related issues etc? I suspect the posts regarding housing, childcare (two small folks at 2 and 4) and the other practicality style advice will need to be posted elsewhere but for now, the work one is a start. All very confused and bewildered about how things would work but excited all the same :jiggy:
  8. Hi all out in sunny Oz. Myself, OH and 5 yr old son are hoping to be in Oz by next Jan-Feb. 175 visa applied for and awaiting process. I am desperate to get some contacts in the Telecomms Industry for Network build and commissioning engineers in SDH and DWDM systems. I have worked on and been trained by Marconi, nortel, Nokia systems for 16yrs in the uk now and am hoping to send cv etc out to some potential employers. I would be really greatful if anyone out there in the industry could give me any pointers or the names of some or any of the companies that do work for Tesra/Optus etc. Hoping to move to wollongong/illawarra area. Thanks for any advice given. Thanks Ronnie
  9. I am a consultant in the WA Trade Contractor Industry. I have just rewritten an ebook, splitted into a 5-part series, on "5-steps on how to sell (smarter) through others in the Trade Contractors Industry" The point is that this may also be applicable to those who want to find a job in the hidden job market. You can download a summary at: PERTH BUSINESS CONSULTANTS - Home The content: 1.Introduction 2.Our intent and our intended readers 3.The sales process in 5-steps: Partner Relationships 3.1.Lead Generation – working through entities of influence 3.1.1.Lead generation – ad hoc hosting 3.1.2.Lead generation – strategic alliances 3.1.3.Lead generation – endorsement by host 3.1.4.Lead generation – referrals 3.2.How to reach those entities of influence 3.3.Why will entities of influence help you? 3.4.Lead generation – finding the invisible market 4.Your first contact 4.1.Your selling Purpose. 4.2.Action Plan 4.3.Outline reasons for your call 4.4.Agreement 5.Your appointment 5.1.Uncovering the real needs 6.Smart selling – Partner Relationship 7.Your selling behavioural style 8.Finally - what gets you the sale? 9.Conversion from leads to prospects to customers 10.Moving towards a Partner Relationship 11.Conclusion APPENDIX A - Next Meeting Planner APPENDIX B – The Octagon Behavioural questionnaire and self score I believe that the concept of identifying "entities of influence" for your job market may be very applicable - although seen from an employer's side. This is based on the work I have published for migrants to WA here: Perth Business Services - Home Trust that it helps!

    Contractors licence in NSW ?

Hi Anyone else out there heading to NSW and planning on being self-employed/sole trader? I have work lined up contracting (i hope) to a friend in Sydney installing kitchens but i've recently discovered that i need to obtain a contractors licence before i can undertake any work in private homes. I've spoken to dept. of fair trading and they said it would be upto the assesing people at TAFE to decide if my supporting documents i.e. stuff i submitted to the TRA , are sufficient to gain a licence. Another bloody hurdle! So i was wondering if any one else has used their TRA docs to gain a licence and were you successful ? Cheers Paul
