    Compulsory Voting

I don't know if this has been discussed, but I was reading about a Scottish by election yesterday, what a surprise, Labour won. There were a few comments about the low turnout, less than 50% and someone suggested compulsory voting and was knocked down for saying this, people saying it was undemocratic. I think voting is a privilege but it is not extended to a lot of countries citizens, I have always voted where ever I have the right, voting is optional in the UK with turnouts usually about 40%, but it is compulsory in Australia, a democratic country where you are free to air your thoughts!

    Are IELTS compulsory???

Can someone settle an argument between me and my husband please!!!?? I was under the impression that an IELTS test was compulsory? At the recent expo event we attended a rep from the government of WA said that all tradies are having to sit the test and achieve a score of 7 or above - but my husband reckons you only need to sit the test if you are shy of points for your visa? I think either way it is well worth doing as it will assist his applications for jobs (he is a gas fitter/plumber) and anything that helps is worth doing is it not? Or have I got it totally wrong!!!!?!!? Lol!! :biglaugh:
  3. Hi there - bought a car when we first got here in July, and took out fully comp insurance with AAMI. Just got something thru the post saying 'my compulsory third party green slip is due for renewal' - eh? Is this something totally separate or am covered by my fully comp policy???
  4. Hi, I wonder if anyone can help i am just about to complete my PGCE post compulsory and i need to know wether this is recognised in Oz. Also do i need to do my QTLS or would i be able to do this in Oz. I am starting to think i have done the course and that i should have gone into primary teaching as all my experience is within Special Educational needs. I have worked with Autistic children, EBD children all aspects of learning difficulties and physical disability. My degree is in Special Educational Needs and Sports studies and my PGCE specialism is Disability studies and British Sign Language. I am also qualified to Level 3 in British Sign Language. Can anyone tell me what my job prospects are, wether i need to do further training in Oz or what my options are?? Thanks a million Lindsey x:hug:
  5. Help! I am interested in taking a 3 year degree course. The Student Visa requirements are very clear, but the actual course requirements for international students are less than clear! I have an English O-level from way back in 1987, but it would appear that this doesn't count! It suggests that I may need to take the Ielts test.I am not sure after being educated in an English speaking country if this still applies? Are there any other "mature" ( yeh!) students at Uni in Australia who could help me??? Or anyone who knows more than I do about it! Thanks in advance!:spinny: Barbie333
  6. Does everyone have to fill in a P85 when permanently leaving UK? From what I can gather, the only purpose of it is to get a refund from HMRC for the current tax year? Just wondering because my OH hasn't worked for 10 years so there's no chance of any oustanding tax owing to her. What happens if you don't fill in a P85?
  7. Hi everyone, or should I say G'day :biglaugh: Pleeeease help me!!!!! My family and I are seriously interested in moving to Australia and in particular Adelaide in a few years time. I'm currently in my last year of University and will have a BA Hons in Film Studies by next July (09). After the completion of my degree I am considering doing either a PGCE in post compulsory education or a Masters degree. I have to apply for my visa independently from my family as by the time we move out there I will be 25/26 and out of full time education. I have been told by Australia house that in order to get out there on a work visa I have to have 12 months work experience in my field. SO, (sorry for rambling!) my questions are: Is Film Studies widely taught in post compulsory Education? What is post compulsory education like in Australia- do they have A-Levels? Would it be better if I done my Masters so I could possibly teach in a University instead of the upper years of school? What is the education system like- particularly within Adelaide? Is there realistically any chance of being employed on a permanent basis? Please help me as i am very confused...:wideeyed:
  8. Time to renew my CTP, and decided to get some quotes. Not the first time I'd done this, but had never noticed the website printed on the registration renewal notice; Welcome to the CTP Premium Calculator (Motor Accident Insurance Commission) You enter when your CTP renewal is due, and what kind of vehicle it is (car/bike etc), and it lists the different CTP insurers and their prices. Didn't realise it was a flat fee, been thinking it was specific to us! The difference between insurers was only about $6! Decided to go with the company who does our comprehensive insurance, then it's easier to deal with one company if we have a mishap. I'm a plank, and you've probably all seen this, but was new info for me.:embarrassed: Jo
