Hi I currently work for an overseas development charity in the UK and would love to continue to work for some kind of charity, NGO or caring organisation when we get to Australia - ideally in fundraising. My Australian OH, who left Oz ten years ago, thinks that I'm unlikely to get much choice and would certainly be paid a low salary if I got something because the Aussies aren't into organised charity like that - they help their mates and others but on an informal basis only. He doesn't remember the likes of charity funruns, telly fundraising events, collection boxes in supermarkets etc. Would anyone agree with him? I've done some research and there seem to be busy international charities like Oxfam and other national/local charities in cancer research, environment etc. but it's hard to judge how big they are and no-one seems to list their salaries on their job offers. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello! I am a first time poster. I will be moving to Brisbane in the next month as I have a job offer. We don't see ourselves staying for more than 2 years (yet!) and so we would like to get things for our flat/house as cheaply as possible as they will be donated after we have finished using them. So what I am wanting to know is are there any cheap shops out there in Brisbane? I am meaning charity shops or something similar to our Wilkinsons, Primark, Poundland etc. We will be looking for somewhere furnished but will probably end up buying toasters, pans, cutlery and bedding etc. ANY help at all please? :cute:

I've recently arrived in Sydney on my husbands 457 visa. I'm a newly qualified social worker and am starting to think about part time work. Is it easy to get work in this sector, either stat or vol? I'd like to hear about any info, opportunities or experiences you've got to share.

Hey everyone. Hope this is allowed on here - my apologies if not . We are in the same boat as most others on here patiently or not so patiently waiting for our visas ...... I became very stressed with the whole thing and decided instead of checking my online status every spare minute - I have come up with something to take my mind of the visa - for a couple of months anyway and hopefully raise money for charity at the same time. I am a very unfit LOL , overweight busy working mum with three kids and I have taken up jogging it is fab for relieving stress gets you out in the fresh air and hopefully might even help me lose a bit of weight and get me that beach body I need for when my time comes to be in OZ. LOL. The PE teacher at work gave me a training programme "Off the sofa to running 3 miles in 10 weeks" I will email anyone a copy if you like it is working. I have signed up for the race for life and wondered if any other members fancied joining me - there are events right across the country. I am entered into the one in Hull on the 31st May at the costello stadium. We could collectively raise money for cancer ??? If I can do it anyone can. Oh forgot it is just for females of any age but you blokes are welcome to sponsor me. Anyone not convinced but would like to sponsor me you can do it online via this link the money goes direct to the charity. http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/tinabatson

Hi folks Well another slightly daft question for you. Do they have many charity shops in Perth? I love a good old rummage so to speak (much to my kids embarrasssment) and I love having a bargain from the charity shop and helping a good cause at the same time. So I was wondering will I have to curb my enthusiasm for other peoples cast offs once we get to Perth or do they have them too. I visited Perth 18 months ago and can't recall seeing any. Cheers Mandy x
