Hi there, the ACT board is pretty inactive at the moment, so I thought I would see if I could get a few posts on the go for people like us who are moving to Canberra in 2015 who have ACT-specific questions about their upcoming move, and for those already in Canberra interested in providing guidance, advice and support. INTRO: We're a family of four, with two twin 18-month-olds, who are moving sometime in May 2015 from Edinburgh. My wife (who is English) has got a job with a uni in town, and I (American/Brit) am going to be watching the kids full time at first before hopefully finding some political/third sector work in policy/comms 2 days a week, which is the arrangement I've got now. MOVING WHERE?: Right now looking at Inner North/South - Belconnen, Ainsle, Dickson, Red Hill. Primarily interested in places close to wife's work, with decent restaurants, coffee shops, places for little ones to play - both a house with a yard and public playgrounds/indoor softplays. From research, inner north seems a bit more colourful, inner south a bit older. Have no idea if that's a fair assessment. UNANSWERED QUESTIONS: Best record stores? Places to see local bands? Where to watch Scottish footie? Where to watch American football? Anyone know of a fiddle society? Any 'new to town/expats social groups? Good softplays? First 'wow, we're not in the UK anymore' experience? Anyway, hopefully this will generate a few responses and a few new people posting! Cheers Mike

Anyone have experience in going through Advertising Specialist Vetassess Skill Assessment? Do you use agent or do you do it yourself? Any agents reccomended? Also, for Canberra (ACT) skilled nomination (190), anyone get the Advertising Specialist nominations? Now I am estimating the chance of getting 190 under Advertising Specialist nominations. My wife and I looked at the Student route with her studying in QLD but after reading other posts and information, I feel this may not be the best route as we hope to eventually gain PR in Oz. THe other option may be to apply for ACT nomination as my occupation is listed (Financial Investment Manager). I'd be keen to here from those who have moved to Canberra about your views on the area, job prospects for me and typical timescales for ACT nomination if possible?

Hi, I've applied for migration as an advertising specialist for Canberra Regional Sponsorship which states this position as Limited Availability but I have not been able to find a single job in this category online. Can someone please refer me to portals (other than Hays, Seek, Michael Page which I practically remember by heart) Are there any advertising positions in Canberra (or ACT) at all?? I'm so lost! Hi All, my wife and I intends to migrate to Australia but undecided where to go to. We will apply based on my wife's nominated occupation which is Program/Project Adminstrator and it seems that only SA and ACT sponsor such occuptation. Understand that SA requires proof of funds of at least AUD25k whereas ACT does not have such a requirement. I have read that Canberra seems to be a dull place to live and most jobs are government related. Adelaide on the other hand seems to be more lively as it's one of the world's most livable cities according to EIU. Any inputs would be most valuable! Thanks a lot! :biggrin:

As way of introduction, we're a couple with a single job offer and sponsorship for 2 VISA's for a job in Canberra, so will be looking around for advice and to catch up on a few things we've read on this forum. Right at the beginning of the process but aim to use this place to help us make up our minds, then hopefully give us some much needed support if we go ahead. Looking forward to it....

Hi All, Just a quick intro about myself and my family we are Mark and Debbie and 3 kids Amy 9,Lathan 2.4 and Ellen-Mae 9 months. We received our stni visa grant letter last week and are still in a state of shock as we didn't expect this to happen before June/July we only did our meds in March! Anyway we have been talking to our settlement officer in the ACT goverment and they have been really helpful with the rental questions,Job info etc but we really are interested in finding out about all the usual things cost of living, work,schools,getting to know people in fact anything really it sounds a great place with a real balance but I know it gets a bad press from some other quarters so lets have the truth now!
