  1. Hi Everyone I'm a single, 25 year old female- I arrive in Perth at the beginning of December on a whv and have a few questions...! -How easy is it to pick up work? I have a marketing degree and PR/marketing background with a ton of office experience, so ideally I'd be looking to pick up similar work. Otherwise Ive been a bar manager, waitress, shop assistant, kitchen assistant... pretty much anything hospitality! So happy to do that too in the short term. My questions is, will I find work fairly quickly if I put in the usual hard work and procativity? would love to hear about anyones experiences! -On a similar note, I have an STCW95 (basic sea-fearing qualification) and a little experience stewardessing on yachts... does anyone know if there is any likelyhood of picking up work on boats? Be that tourist boats, dive boats, anything really... -How long should I book my first hostel for.. is two weeks about right? I'd be keen to get into a house/flat share pretty soon... - Can anyone reccomend a great hostel that helps you find work (i.e job boards and good contacts) and is NOT a party hostel? (I backpacked Austrlia when I was 18, so its a case of been there done that, now I'm feeling old and prefer to have active days and chilled out nights), but also not expensive? do share your experiences. -Finally, which neighbourhoods do you reccomend for a flat/house share? If I can afford it I'd love to be near the beach! I hear Freemantle and Subiaco are nice, any thoughts? Thankyou so much for any help, I'm super keen to hear from anyone doing the WHV in Perth
  2. Hello, I am looking to find up to another 3 people (possibly may be 2 as there is currently somebody already interested at this time) who would like to share the cost of buying and running a boat. I feel it would give those involved a real boost in their and their families leisure time having access to do something like this but keeping the cost to a minimum. The initial thought is to put equal amounts of $12,500 (total of $50,000 with the 4 involved) for the boat which will buy a 25 to 30 foot 4 berth cruiser which would act as a great family boat which you could even stay overnight on if a trip up the coast was planned (this sort of thing(http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mustang-2...item2312a1593f .) The intention would be to have the boat stored at St Kilda marina initially (and then the new Marina that is being built at Wyndham) so that it is just a drive up and cruise off set up rather than having to tow and launch the boat and worry about where the boat would be stored. Obviously all the running costs for the boat (apart from petrol that you use personally) would be split including sourcing the boat and paying for an inspection which I think would be very prudent. I think this would be a very cost effective option to own a boat and you would still get reasonable usage time of a minimum of a week or weekend every four weeks – there are many companies that operate this sort of venture but take huge profits from it and often require very large capital input – the beauty of this is that it replicates that with no profit and for minimal outlay but would still result in a big change in your lifestyle. If anybody needed to opt out for any reason you would just sell your share. The intention would be to draw up a full legal contract between the parties so it would be a safe proposition for all (I already have a copy of a similar agreement that I was sent from somebody who had organized the same thing in Queensland). Most boats seem to be sat idle for most of the time so this way having a week/ weekend useage every 4 weeks I feel that those involved would get good useage for their outlay. Any interested parties please get in touch. Cheers, Mark.
  3. Looking to ship our dinghy (not the inflatable kind). A laser. Anyone had any experince with this? Licence required, for instance?
  4. We have a 6 metre half cabin boat for sale. (We want to downsize the boat and get a slightly bigger caravan) Boat has a Yamaha 115 hp 4 stroke petrol engine and has only done 60 hours. Porta Potty on board as well. All safety equipment up to date, Dual BatteriesElectronic SatNav & Fish Finder, Rocket Launcher, VHF Radio, CD/Stereo, Full bimini covers (so can be totally covered in) which can be removed in various ways. Boat is regularly serviced and has the full service history. Purchased in July 2009 and is in excellent condition. Paid $44,600 for it so any reasonable offer would be grateful bearing in mind the shortage of hours the boat has done. If anyone is interested please PM me and they are welcome to come and look at it. Caz Beckham

  8. Hi there, We are looking at chartering a boat with some friends for New Years Eve in Sydney Harbour. The people who have taken places already are made up of English and Swedish. Everyone is really good fun and it should be a really good night!!! We have filled 30 spaces out of 40, the cost will be $300 per head if we can fill the full 40 allocated spots on the boat. It is a BYO boat and it also has a BBQ onboard, so once the boat cost is paid for the other costs shouldn't be too high. If you are interested in joining us or would like anymore information? Please drop me a message and I'll forward on all the details. Cheers, Pete & Gill

    Missed the boat????

Just watching the European and USA/Uk markets rapid fall over the last couple of days makes me wonder.... Are any of the would be migrants stuck in blighty going to ever be afford to come out here??? Its fantastic if your already here (22celcius today in winter) lovely view over Sydney harbour. If the pound doesnt recover in the next couple of years i dont think anyone is going to be able to afford the extortionate house prices and high interest rates. For Pomes already here i dont think you guys can lose. Choice of returning home when you want loaded with cash, maybe even mortgage free, or stay out here and ride the boom and keep sunbathing!! I dont want to sound negative but i fear that if your not already in now you never will be. Fingers crossed everyone..

  14. http://www.smh.com.au/national/australia-malaysia-to-trade-asylum-seekers-gillard-20110507-1ed1a.html She has forgotten that there is an army of aging liberals who know how to tell stories and who protect those non-genuine refugees. Generally I am happy about her thought to solve this popular topic which has flooded media recently and Mr. Bowen can finally focus on finishing clearing the mess with backlog. Julia we love you!
  15. We have already applied to take 2 cars to Perth when we move there and we have import licences for each car. Does anyone know if a twin axle boat trailer (large enough to take a 24 foot boat) would also need an import licence? We know that there is a limit on the number of vehicles you can import and you can only take one vehicle per person and we wondered if we are now up to our maximum limit if a trailer is classed as another vehicle. If anyone has any information about this, it would be really helpful. Many thanks Ali and Chris

  23. Hi, after checking out the prices of vehicles in Oz, we are now thinking of taking our 4x4 Ford Ranger truck with us. We will be able to do this as have PR and have owned the truck from new for over 12 months. We havent a permanent address in Australia to go to yet though as are going to have to find a rental. Looking to go to Hervey Bay Queensland. We were originally going to just take a few boxes with us and sell everything else we own. As well as the truck we have a kayak and a 10ft walker bay rib (inflatable) which has a trailer. We also have landscaping tools that would sell for nothing here and would cost a fortune to replace. Has anyone else shipped over similar things and was it worth all the agro in the end?? Any advice would be great thanks Alison

  25. The High Court of Australia, in a unanimous decision, has held that the offshore processing of two refugee claimants who arrived by boat last year from Sri Lanka and consequent denial of access to the court system was an error of law. With such refugees 'processed' offshore, they are currently denied the right to challenge any refusal by DIAC on their refugee claim in the Australian court system. But refugees who arrive by other means e.g. flight are entitled to have their cases heard in the Australian courts.
