If I open an Aussie account from the UK before leaving, can I pay in a cheque thats' made out in pounds? Obviously I know the bank will make a small charge and the exchange rate goes up and down etc. But is this actually possible, or can an Australian account only accept payments/transfers in AUD ?

Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to open up a bank account in Australia while being in the country on just an ETA (visitor visa) ? Has anyone had any experience doing this? If I am successful, I will need to attend an AHPRA office in Australia to finalise some registration there, and thus need proof of Australian residence. I was hoping to apply for an australian bank account while still in the UK but am unsure of the ETA visa ~(NOT a work visa)~ will allow me to do this. Then I could get the bank to print off a statement with the Australian address I will be temporarily residing at. Kind regards, Daniel

Hi Guys, Well by God's grace things seem to be progressing well and hopefully if we clear our Health Check then we seem to inch closer in acquiring a 489 Visa and considering it would take 5 to 6 months i.e. May - June we should have our visa in our hand. If things go as per plan then we intend doing our landing in Sept - Oct 2018 but I have many queries on how to go about it? We are a family of 4 (2 children aged 9 and 4) which suburb in Adelaide do we decide to live in and what should be the criteria while choosing a suburb ? (close proximity to the city, schools, public transport etc) considering that there wont be any income when we reach, what is the monthly outgoing should we expect? We plan to rent 2 bedroom apartment / house. can my children get admissions in a government school? ( i know it wont be free as I am on a 489 visa) and what would the fee structure be like? (Grade 6 and Grade 1) what is the best way to scout for jobs? appreciate if anyone can share a template of CV's that are normally followed. are rental properties normally furnished or unfurnished? can we get a short term rental where we can be flexible to move out once we decide on the suburb we want to live in? I would also appreciate any additional info that you think can be useful, like from your own experiences, lessons learnt, do's and don'ts etc. Thank you. KPG

Hello, If all goes well, then my family and I are planning to move to Adelaide in the month of Aug - Sept 2018 and have a few concerns / questions on money transfers. can one open a bank account from overseas, i.e. before arriving in Adelaide? If so then how do we go about it? (Money transfer from UAE, Qatar) any recommendations on banks? Some with low service charges etc? is the transferred money taxed? If so then what % Appreciate any other additional info that you may think is useful. Thank you. KPG

Opening bank account as a couple - single vs joint account?
eggy76 posted a topic in Money & Finance
Just wondering what most couples decide on opening joint bank accounts before you migrate. We are unsure if there would be any unforeseen issues or pitfalls opening a joint bank account to start with before migrating? We are both flying out the same time so no issues presenting our details when we get there. I wanted to make sure that the other half can access money easily without having to use my cards etc (and as much as I love him, grocery shopping everytime together can be a real drag..). Or would it be best to open 2 separate accounts, bearing in mind we will be dependent on my income at least the first few months before he gets a job - would there be costs transferring some money to his account (same bank - we are considering NAB)? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. -
Hi all Just opened a Commonwealth Bank account online. Of course I still need to go and show my ID at the branch I chose when registering, but I'll have plenty of time on my hands when I arrive...! Will let you know how it goes [won't be happening until after 27 May though].

Myself and my boyfriend are travelling to Australia in April, landing in Brisbane and have heard that the Australia government ask for a printout of your bank account balance to ensure you have enough money whilst there. Is this true? If so we have also set up a NAB bank account which we can transfer money too. Should we do a printout of our money in UK bank before transferring to Oz bank? Help

Bank Hotel, Newtown to Woolahra Hotel, 'big' night for me!
MARYROSE02 posted a topic in New South Wales
Got the train from Central to St Peters then walked in a meandering route back to Enmore & Newtown, two schooners of Tiger in The Bank, then decided to get a cab to Woolahra for two more schooners and a meal. Spending money which I actually had for a change. Walked back home to Surry Hills all the way down Oxford St to Crown St, mixed in with mobs of fans who'd been to see ?Foo Fighters? at the SFS. I did not really mean to go out but once I got the 'taste'........ There's plenty to see and do in all those inner city 'burbs too. Lost count of all the pubs and restaurants, plus book and music shops which were still open too. -

Hi Can anyone clarify for me.. We have recently got our CO, they have asked for Evidence of employment for 5 of the last 10 years. To include payslips, Bank statements & Taxation documents. I have all my payslips & taxation documents (P60), however I bank online & only have access to 6 months bank statements. Will this be enough? Do I really have to order 5 years of statements, at a large expense?? Any help appreciated

Hiya. I am thinking of opening a Commonwealth Bank account before we get to Oz, but I had a couple of questions that I'd love unbiased answers to (rather than the bank's answers!). 1) Is there another bank that doesn't charge you $6.00 a month to have an account?! 2) Will I get taxed for moving my UK money into an Australian account? (This worries me, as I already got taxed EARNING the money!) 3) Is there another bank that's good, as the Commonwealth is involved in the unfair closure of the Sandringham Hotel in Sydney (a great music venue - Save our Sando!) and I don't really want to give them my custom. Any advice gratefully received, thank you!! :-)

Hello everyone! I am having a bit of a problem with my UK based credit card - I have fallen into the usual trap of intending to pay it all off before the special 0% rate ended - and failed. I am on a residence visa but have only been here since January. I have a good credit rating in the UK - don't know if that makes any difference here? I am not eligible for another UK based credit card b ecause I don't live there but also it seems I can't transfer a UK balance to an Australian credit card. I am supporting 2 people on my modest salary so I can't afford to pay it off quickly and I owe about 3000 pounds. In the mean time the interest rate on my debt is now 27% and within a few months we will have to go home because it will be so extortionate we wont' be able to afford to live. Help! Any suggestions? Rachel

hi there, my partner and i are going to apply for a defacto visa soon and we dont have a joint bank account, we're planning on opening one up asap but it will be opened like a month before we apply-will this be a problem? also we both live together but we live with his parents so we dont pay bills etc, we're gonna get the parents to put that in their declaration would that be enough? we have evidence mostly in photos and old texts, we also took a trip to nz together but im worried that evidence wise we dont have enough. Could anyone else suggest what other evidence would be good to include? ive been digging through mountains of bank statements trying to find something where ive bought or paid for something for him. He's also written a thesis and have put me in the aknowlegement- would this be helpful to include? i have photos of when i met his grandmother and cousin (both from abroad) but there is no date on the photos. im really worried about our lack of evidence! any help would be fantastic Thanks

So DH is over there and has signed up with bank west, or is it west bank? Not sure, anyway, he's been told he can't make international transfers online, but must go to the actual bank and make a physical transfer which is highly inconvenient and so he's been going to western union to send me money, but that works out expensive. My question is, is there any bank over there where you can set up to pay an international bank account online? It seems bizarre that you couldn't, even in the middle east we could do that from our bank account. Any advice? Thanks

Hi everyone, I currently work for a UK Bank & would love the opportunity to move to oz. I've spoken to the MD of an OZ company that do the same role as I currently do (asset finance) and he did advise me I have a "skill" that would add value to a company. However my actual job title doesnt appear on the skilled job list so im confused if I would be able to make the move. Ideally I would like to be able to get a visa based on having a skill as im finding most companies I've contacted are not forthcoming in sponsoring?? Please help!
