    Bali for Christmas!

I'm going to Bali for Christmas & NY and I can't wait just to relax and unwind! Anyone else going somewhere different for the "festive" season?? :wubclub:
  2. He is the youngest Australian to be arrested in Indonesia under the country’s harsh anti-drugs laws. Police sources have told News Ltd the teen was arrested allegedly in possession of a small amount of marijuana. He is understood to have been on holiday in Bali and is now being held in the jail cells at Denpasar’s police headquarters. DFAT confirmed the arrest and said consular officials had been in contact with the boy and his family. ''An Australian teenager from NSW was detained in Bali, Indonesia on Tuesday 4 October 2011 after he was found with a small quantity of drugs,'' the spokesperson said. Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has told the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to the make the matter a top priority. ''(Mr) Rudd has directed that the Australian Ambassador in Jakarta and the Consul General in Bali make this their top priority and undertake all efforts to resolve the matter quickly and seek the early release of the boy,'' a spokesperson said. It is understood that the schoolboy was allegedly in possession of 6.9 grams gross of marijuana or 3.6 grams net. It is not yet confirmed what charges he will face, but it is likely to be drug possession charges which, under Indonesia’s harsh narcotics laws, carries a 12-year maximum. While scores of Australians have been arrested in Bali in possession of drugs in small and large amounts, the NSW schoolboy is the youngest to have ever faced Indonesian justice. Under Indonesian law, unlike Australia, there are no children’s court systems. Juveniles are dealt with in the mainstream court system, which has dealt with all Australians currently behind bars here and are often housed in adult jails. There are very few children’s jails and there is no children’s jail in Bali. Young offenders are normally kept in a special children’s cell inside Kerobokan Jail but mix freely with the mainstream prison population. Most Australians arrested in Bali recently and in possession of small amounts of drugs have initially been charged with the 12-year drug possession laws but later had the charges dropped when they gave evidence of being addicted to drugs. The laws for drug addicts using drugs for their own personal use are much less severe and carry only a four-year maximum term. Most people end up being sentenced to months in jail and are then released. Victorian man Ricky Shane Rawson was recently released after serving a four-month term for possession of 0.06 grams of methamphetamine. And Angus McCaskill, who was originally sentenced to a massive seven years in jail for possession of 3.58 grams of cocaine, had his term cut on appeal and he was freed after 14 months behind bars.

    Bali Legionnaires Warning!

June 10, 2011, 1:50 The Health Department has issued a new warning for people travelling to Bali after two cases of Legionnaires’ disease were reported in the past week, including one in WA. There have been 15 confirmed cases of the bacterial disease in Australians returning from Bali since last August, including 10 West Australians. The disease spreads when people inhale droplets of contaminated water from air-conditioning units, spas and the popular misting sprays found in hot climates Communicable Disease Control director Paul Armstrong said that while the exact source of the disease remained unknown, all the infected Western Australians had stayed in the central Kuta area of Bali. “Legionnaires’ disease most often affects middle-aged and elderly people, particularly those who smoke or who have lung disease, diabetes, kidney disease or a weakened immune system,” Dr Armstrong said. “People with these risk factors who visit Bali should avoid the central area of Kuta in the vicinity of the intersection of Jalan Singosari and Jalan Kartika Plasa.” Dr Armstrong said early symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease were typically similar to severe flu. The department is advising people who have recently returned from Bali and have developed flu-like symptoms within 10 days of their return to contact their GP.
  5. Hello! Having lurked around in the background looking at posts, we had to finally join! We are family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children), travelling by car from UK en-route to Oz by car. Perth/Freemantle looks like our given destination. We are currently in Bali and think we are just about to be granted long-awaited subclass 176 Sponsored Skill visa. In preparation, I have some questions re: vehicle import worthiness based on our vehicle and our current location. Will go now and try to ask the right question in the right section. I know you guys will be able to help us. Many thanks. Cassie2
  6. Has anyone had any experience of Club Med here? Planning our first "proper" family holiday in 3 years and really fancy the all inclusive experience they offer. Just deciding between the 2 resorts. Have heard a few horror stories lately about "Bali belly", so am a bit wary even though its the easiest option for us from Perth. Any advice/experience would be appreciated.
  7. I've got the chance of a weeks trip to Bali to join my husband who will be working out there but can't get over the cost of flights. $1650 is the cheapest direct flight I've seen. WTF!!! Thats over £900 - in England you can fly there for about £700! I'm just having a winge really and holding out for hope of a better price, certainly can't justify paying that, which means i'll have to stay behind - bummer! I'm wondering if it's cheap once you're there? Anyone got any suggestions? :arghh:
  8. Can anyone recommend some accomodation in Bali for the 5 of us please? Can't seem to find any that will accomodate us all in one room/suite, all asking me to book 2 separate rooms. Hotel or apartment style is fine - would just like some recommendations please...... Thanks
  9. Anyone know of a good apartment complex for families in Bali? What resorts are best for families; any we should avoid?

    bali weather in january

Hi all, we've changed our stopover enroute to Aus now. Looks like its going to be Bali (which we visited last year and loved). Does anyone know what the weather is like in mid/late january in Bali (Kuta). We know its the rainy season, but how bad is it? Is it just a thunderstorm for an hour a day or does it pee it down all day?
  13. Hi, Does anyone know of an airline that does direct flights from Brisbane to Bali (Denpasar). I find it hard to believe that you can't fly direct but am having trouble finding one. Thanks!! Lynne
