    Bag snatch warning

I received this as an email today, I am not sure if it definately happened, but worth thinking about when next your in a public loo. A woman visited the toilet in Karrinyup Shopping Centre and hung her handbag on the back of the toilet door. As she carried on about her business, A hand suddenly appeared over the top of the stall and grabbed her bag clean off the hook!!! She immediately reported the incident to the head of security. A couple of days later she had a call from the head of security to say her bag had been found without her purse. So she arranged a convenient time to go and meet him to collect her things. On arriving at Karrinyup at the agreed time, the head of security was not expecting her. No one from the centre had actually called her as the bag had still not been found. When the lady got home, her house had been burgled with no sign of forced entry. The Police believe the robbers had used her Driving License for the address and her keys to let themselves in! This is real - it isn't just a scaremongering story. Many will be so shocked at how complex bag snatching crime has become. Please be extra vigilant ladies AND gents (with your man bags) there are a lot of desperate criminals out there!
  2. Well I'm just in the process of trying to work out what to take on the flight and what to ship but just wanted a bit of help about the sizes of bags allowed. I'm flying with Singapore airlines so get my normal baggage (unfortunately as I'm an oz citizen returning home I dont' think I get the extra), my 7kg hand luggage and a handbag. But what size handbag do they allow? I've got big ones but don't want to take one of those full of stuff only to have them tell me I've got too much. Any ideas? ALso I've got my little boy flying with us so although he doesn't get hand luggage I can take nappies etc for him, anyone know roughly what size they will allow of that too? Thanks so much x

    One Bag travelling

A friend told me about the 'onebag.com' website Leisure and Business Travel Packing List - Travel Light with One Bag! The idea is that for any trip you do, all you need is a single carry on bag for the aircraft. I am going to give it a try for my one month holiday to Europe. I have just purchased the recommended carry on bag that looks like a regular bag but converts to a backpack. I recommend checking out the site for anyone going on holiday. I would also like to hear if anyone has any other good websites they know about travelling light, or europe holidays in general I think this one bag idea will work well for adult travellers, but if kids are travelling it may not be so easy. Cheers.
  6. Just wondered what the general opinion was on bag checks in Aus shops? I ask this because of witnessing a woman earlier, foreign I think, not wanting to show inside her bag to a checkout girl, and the staff and those around looking very confused. For those of you in the UK, it seems to be normal practice for you to be requested to show inside your bag on the way out of a shop, to prove you haven't taken anything. I know this sometimes is done in the UK, but not as regularly. Now, I know that if you've nothing to hide, then there's no problem, but it got me thinking; surely the onus is on the store to catch shoplifters, not for me to prove I haven't taken anything? I've actually had to queue once, whilst our bags were checked leaving a store. I guess it's just something I'll have to get used to, but I feel a bit like a criminal sometimes. I don't really mind, and now offer it open as I'm leaving for inspection, but if someone was going to take something, I think they'd store it somewhere more inventive than their bag. Jo

    A Mixed Bag

Due to the nature of my occupation (Integrated Logistic Support(ILS)/Supportability Engineer), and facing a problem with security clearance as most of the work is defence related, I’m taking the probably near impossible route and trying to find a job before moving – looking for an employer that will consider sponsorship for both visa and security issues. Leaving aside the practicality issues for the moment (!), I’m assuming that with a potential employer I’d have to look at a temporary/business visa (457? - get out there to do the job as soon as possible), with an eye on PR at some point in the future. We’re a family of four, wife is/was a hairdresser (but has been a ‘home-maker’ for the last 15 years or so), eldest is about to take her GCSEs (15 going on 40), and our youngest is about to complete primary school (11). Youngest has high functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorder, which means in the UK a few hours of classroom help, reducing every year, in a mainstream school. Academically he’s doing great, it’s just that if you were to meet him, you’d think he was just not very ‘streetwise’, or a few years ago before everything had to be labelled appropriately, perhaps a very ‘young’ 11. Any ideas on whether there’d be any immigration/visa issues to be faced taking the family out on a temp visa, then applying out there for PR, relating to my sons autism? Anyone been in a similar situation with regards to ‘special needs’? Not too worried about our particular route, was offered a job back in 2007 but had to decline due to a family issue (having discovered that interviews over a video conferencing link are not necessarily any easier) so it not totally impractical/unlikely, just have to hope for another opportunity to come my way!
  8. Hi all, Due to move in four weeks and I don't really want to move much stuff probably an additional bag (mainly of clothes) and probably a small box of books and maybe a further box. I am wondering what are the best means of transporting this at the most reasonable price, reliable and won't take months! Has anybody just shipped a few things and if so what companies did you use and/or check out? Thanks and a Happy New Year to all. A
  9. Hi there I have a few questions now that we have a buyer and things cropping up left right and centre so I have some odd ones which I'd love those that have already made the leap across the 10,500 miles to the other side of the world. 1. Dishwashers - we have one here but will leave it with the house for next occupants, we want to buy a new one here, am I right in saying it's cheaper in uk and if we do buy one over here to ship over with our stuff are the fitments the same? 2. Sat Nav - something else I wish to purchase, however, do I buy the Uk model and get the Oz update when we get over there or just buy an Oz sat nav when we get over there? 3. What items should I buy more of over here to take over that are cheaper/better quality or better access to, I've heard for example bed linen is more expensive so I will buy some of my fitted sheets as we have an extra deep mattress to bring over so figured it will be easier to bring a few with me, is there anything else you can suggesst? 4. Can I bring a box of washing up powder to put in the container (it's not food nor is it explosive) it's just I am a member of a cash and carry and can get a huge box which lasts for months so wanted to bring one over to save money. 5. Finally, and this is the biggie - how the heck do you organise the last week from completion of sale to getting rid of doggies to getting container over and going to airport? I would love some advice here on how other people have done it so help give me a guide as to how to plan it. I just can't get my head round once the container has bin and the house is empty then realistically we need to either live in B&B/hotel before leaving for airport or go stay with family? (Animals can go to kennels couple days before container comes). Any advice or ideas greatly received, many many thanks..... Oh and I'd hardly had this post up 2 seconds when I realised I'd forgotten to ask something else :- Being a family of 4 both OH and I are 6ft+ kids of 7 and 11, however, as kids can't sit in emerg exit seats can anyone suggest where might be better suited (other than business class which I'd love but can't do). Also any good website for looking for furnished accommodation north of brisbane Brighton/Redcliffe/Bracken Ridge area for 2-4 weeks whilst sourcing longer term rent or purchase. Thank you again.
  10. Hi everyone We finally got our visa at the end of Oct after an 11half month wait. We were very excited. We were all set to move over on Nov 28th - tickets booked, shippers organised etc. We were going to leave our house on the market till Spring and if it still hadn't sold we would rent it out. Well in the last week everything has changed. OH seriously stressed at thought of leaving house and not having any capital when we move - he was making himself ill with worry. So now we are still flying out on 28th. Going to validate our visas, have a holiday with family for 6 weeks and come back mid Jan. We'll go permenantly as soon as the house sells (who knows when that will be!) It sure is a rollercoaster ride!! Have been very upset at the change of plans but for us it is the most sensible thing to do in the current climate. Alex
