The world Protour cycling race in South Australia also won recognition as the Best Tourism Event for the third year in a row, at the Australian Event Awards in Sydney. Acting SA Tourism Minister John Hill said the cycling event's latest wins were an outstanding achievement. "The Tour Down Under continues to go from strength to strength," he said. "Last night's award is confirmation of the quality of the event and the esteem in which it is held across Australia and internationally." He says this year's cycling event had a record crowd estimated at 780,000 lining the route and achieved hundreds of hours of television coverage. Elsewhere, other winners included: Best New Event - City of Melbourne for Melbourne Music, an inaugural festival of great diversity that activated major live music venues and included over 100 free concerts. Southport Ambassador Awards 2008: meet the winners - Southport Visiter It was a big award ceremony in Southport where our business is ,Vikki our waitress won best waitress, I won most welcoming host and receptionist, then we all won team of the year out of 130 teams, and at the end of the night there was a special award for the winner of all winners, there was a huge big build up to it then they called me out it was brilliant, was like being at the oscars!!! By winning that I am now the ambassador for southport, I had to go to liverpool on Tuesday to have a formal interview with a panel of 4 judges and represent southport against other regions in the north west, the finals for that are tomorrow wednesday 28th at the national tourism awards held in the huge new arena in liverpool, (the MTV awards are being held there later on in the year .
