  1. Hello, My family and I are moving to Melbourne in January 2012. My partner James is a carpenter so he will find work in his field, however I would also like to get a job. Our little girl is 10 months old so I would only like to work part time 3 days a week or about 4 hours per day Mon - Fri. I currently work for Leeds Metropolitan University working as a course administrator and would love to work for a Uni in Melbourne, I have joined all the job alerts at the Uni so any jobs that come up I'm applying for but I know there will be lots of competition. If I can't get a job at a University any admin job would be fine, I was just wondering if anybody had a rough idea of an hourly rate I would expect to get. I'm 32 and have worked at the University for 6 1/2 years and have done lots of temping and admin jobs so I'm quite experienced. Thanks Hayley xx

  6. Hi all Wonder if anyone can help. I'm collating everything to go for a VETASSESS skills assessment for Progam and Project Administrator. I have working in marketing roles for 10 years, but in all of them I have managed projects e.g. created & maintained project plans and other documentation, completed status reports, dealt with questions about the project, presented to senior managers about the projects, worked with suppliers and other teams to deliver the projects. Just wondered if anyone has any experience of going through VETASSESS for this role and what sort of things are they specifically asking for? I could write pages but want to make sure that my CV / application has the key words they are looking for. Many thanks Amy

  8. Hi Everyone My partner has been offered a good job in Esperance, but I am not sure how easily I will find work there. Can anyone shed any light please? I'm not sure what employment is like in the town. I have a strong admin background, as well as hospitality and being a scuba diving instructor. I am pretty easy going about work and just want something to pay the bills. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks (my first time here, so hope I did everything right!)

Hope that's not annoying folks. Sorry if it is.

    Complaint To Admin.

I know we are told often that if we have a problem with admin (Rob) or any of the mods we should use the PM facility etc, but I think it only right and proper that I highlight a certain issue that I find a bit disturbing. As some of you will be aware I have a 'thing' for certain cartoon characters, among my favourites are the Caramel Bunny, Penelope Pit stop, etc, but my dream lady is Betty Boop,:wubclub::wubclub:, a hot chick if I ever saw one. Now, very innocently I changed my avatar recently to one of my love goddess, I did this in the spirit of fair play and hoped some of you would realise my love, lust for Betty, BUT. She who shall remain nameless, no bullocks to it, shame on you Kate (Moving to Melbourne) told me in no uncertain terms that I had broken the rules of PIO,:policeman:. I was told in no uncertain terms that if I continued to use Betty as my avatar then the wrath of Admin would come down on me like a tonne of bricks. I know Kate is Robs wife, but all the same, is this a stretch too far, is Kate abusing her position not only as a mod, but as Robs long term partner,:biglaugh:. I don't know if Kate is aware of the heartache she has caused this end, I now feel as if my relationship with Betty is in someway dirty and wrong,. I know Kate has my sweetheart as her avatar as well, but surely in the spirit of fair play I should be allowed to 'use' Betty to a certain degree. So get voting folks, who's right, don't faff about worrying that Kate is a mod and Robs wife, fairness to the common man I reckon. Love ya really Kate.:wubclub::wubclub::biglaugh::mad::embarrassed: PS. I would happily include a copy of the PM Kate sent me, but in truth I know children and those of a sensitive disposition use this forum, and my modesty does not allow for me to let you see the PM. Suffice to say, the language was somewhat 'colourful', and if truth were known, Kate is a lady I held in high esteem, but after the tirade of abuse and vitriol used in her PM I am for all intents and purposes rather perturbed and upset. I've even changed my avatar to an old and wrinkly Betty in the hope that it will build bridges with Kate and show I am willing to compromise.:wubclub: Cheers Tony.
  11. Renting Sydney- any "admin" fees, whats included and what bills do we pay? Hi, I have found a couple of useful posts regarding the areas I am asking about but all appear to be a few years old so wondered if someone could give me an update? Rental Costs We are planning to live in the Northern Beaches area, Sydney. There is only two of us but we need a garden (for the dogs!) and as Australia doesn't do small houses we know we'll prob end up with a 2-3 bed house which we know will cost anywhere between $500-$700pw (ideally the lower figure!!!). We plan to have saved enough to pay 1mths bond and 1mths rent upfront but is there any "admin" costs that letting agents charge on top of this upfront that we need to factor in? Furniture Included Also are any "white goods" supplied as standard in rental properties (e.g cookers, fridges, freezers, washing machines?) Bills Looking at a couple price for these areas. We have health insurance sorted and I understand you don't pay council tax if renting (does this inc Water??). Is there any "admin" fees that we need to factor in and do we have to pay any bills upfront or are they a month in arrears? Contents Insurance (i presume buildings insurance is paid for by landlord?) Electricity Gas Water Car Insurance and Rego (small car) Food (2x people...although I think we may be eating beans on toast for a while!) Broadband (dont want a landline, just internet) Mobile TV Any help and up to date figures would be much appreciated. Will be there in 2.5months if the visa goes through ok!! Danielle x
  12. Hi all, Im looking to put together a list of any Australian recruitment agencies who specialise in recruiting migrant workers . It should be helpful to everyone who are in the situation of job searching while abroad. I've only found JPA Recruitment but they don't seem to have a lot on their page. Although I'm thinking of emailing them anyway so I will let everyone know what they say. I'd like this post to help other people in the future so I will add all links to the bottom of this. All advice/tips/links would be appreciated. Thank youuuu Alex  Links: http://www.finrecruit.asia

    A message from admin

There's been a couple of threads recently where things have got a little out of hand and some of the posts on the threads have been unhelpful at best and in some cases, quite spiteful and vindictive. I fully understand the frustrations, stress and heartache that the migration process can bring with it, especially over the last couple of years, with evermore uncertainty and delays putting lives on hold and shattering dreams in many cases. For those lucky enough to have got there visas, there's still lots of potential stress and upset to get though, leaving family, having to find new jobs in a foreign country, culture shock, trying to make new friends, feelings of isolation etc. So all I'm asking it that we all try and show a little respect, understanding and support to each other in these difficult times. Although I've been admin for less than a year, I fully realise what a fantastic resource the forum is for migrants and expats alike. It is my firm belief than the moderating team is second to none with all of them devoting many hours of their personal time on the forum to ensure it's smooth running and to assist and help other members where possible. In addition to the moderators, the forum is also very lucky to have many respected business members in various fields such as migration, finance etc. who regularly contribute and share their knowledge freely on the forums. And then there are you, the members, without which, there would be no forum, and I fully appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and experience with each other. As I've said, the forum is a great resource and source of support for so many people, lets try and keep it that way.:wubclub: Thanks Rob Admin
  14. Really pleased. Now do I have to wait a year to have relevant experience with VETASSESS or do I lodge it & start the process for Project/Program Administrator? Can someone clarify for me please. Thanks. Mark
  15. Hey Gday mates arrived in Newcastle a few weeks ago and the whole experience so far is not what I expected. I thought I was going to love Newcastle and the Aussies. Have been out and about with hubbie shaol bay etc and currently living in Merewether (rental) and love the beaches. But there does not seem to be many jobs the main high street is run down and it seems like im living in 70's aussies are way behind the uk with banking fashion etc.... Hubbie has started a job in Maitland which he is plodding on with at mo, and I have had a few trials for jobs but not what I wanted. one being telesales (had to escape after 1 1/2 hours and the other being a coffee shop but was thrown in the deep end on a busy day and told I would be paid on day but wasnt, all fun and games!! Ideally I want day shifts during the week (admin role) I could maybe have a coffee shop job but want more. I worked for a local council in my previous job- business support officer. If anyone in Newcastle knows of any jobs going please let me know. Also if any of you guys fancy meeting up for a toohies please let me know my hubbie and I would love to meet some likeminded people. Sorry to rabbit on.... bye for now-Kirstie x
  16. Hi there, Me and my partner are thinking of moving to Perth, May or June time, as he is finding it hard to get full time work in Adelaide. I'm on temporary residency (gaining citizenship in another 18 months). I was previously an Marketing, Events and Business Administrator for a Management Consultancy company back in the UK. I'm currently working as a Claims Officer for a Private Health Insurer, and have previously done bar work for the Clipsal 500 (RSA qualified). My partner is here on a working holiday visa (which means he can only work for a company for 6 months unless sponsored). This has caused issues even with 3-6 month contracts for some reason... He has been in Banking for nearly 10 years in the UK, and is currently working for Big W. He has also had casual work at the Clipsal 500 and grape picking. (White Card & RSA qualified) If anyone knows of any jobs (office/bar/banking etc) or has anything on offer, please get in touch. Many thanks, Jodie
  17. I thought I would add a new thread on here in the hope that it would help any ladies (or gents!) that work in admin in the UK and plan to do it in Oz, mainly because it seems that quite a few of us are struggling to get into this work once here - forewarned is forearmed as they say! In another thread jokingly discussing this, a website has been added which is offering training geared towards working in Oz - worth a look I would think! The link is http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/general-dilemmas/40452-given-up-applying-admin-jobs-anyone-need-cleaner-mount-martha.html There are plenty of vacancies on all the websites (Seek, CareerOne etc) and the local papers but what I have found in the area I live (Gold Coast) is that most of the vacancies for administrative positions require you to have experience in 'MYOB' (short I think for MindYourOwnBusiness) which for those that don't know, is a software package used for book-keeping/accounting etc similar to Sage and Quickbooks. The latter 2 are used here but MYOB is clearly the favourite/most popular. This has caught me out because I would naturally have expected book-keeping type positions to expect experience in this type of package but not general admin. They almost always expect you to have a certificate to show for it too and preferably also in Microsoft Office - Word/Powerpoint/Excel etc! I am self taught in Quickbooks (although I hate book-keeping but needs must sometimes LOL) and Word/Powerpoint etc (used it for donkeys years), familiar with Sage along with 25+ years of experience in general admin/secretarial stuff but am having no luck so far despite altering my CV/Resume to suit the aussie market (I had hoped LOL). Guess it's also a case of employers wanting aussie experience but you can't get the experience without a job :twitcy: Never mind, will just have to continue wallowing in the lovely sunny winters days here hehe! Lyn x
  18. After months of applying for Admin jobs, with no luck, I have finally given up!! So Im thinking of going it alone as a cleaner....... !!!!! :jimlad: The administration qualifications I gained in the UK (NVQ's) while working for the civil service ar'nt really recognised here in Oz. Although they obviously use microsoft, excel etc., they have different computer programmes here and they obviously want you to have experience in it..... I have spoke to lots of Poms who have had the same problem too. You can take courses at the local college but you have to pay ofcourse, and technically you still dont have the experience. Lots of admin jobs here require MYOB (a basic invoice/accounts software) and even the medical reception and school admin jobs have to deal with accounts aswell. So, if anyone in the Mornington/Mount martha area is busy working full time and needs help with the household chores, feel free to contact me. Thanks Sally-ann

    IT Admin, New to Canberra

Hello There... I'm an IT system admin, heading to Canberra on September. Don't have any friends there, but do have some family in Sydney. I'm single so I wanna find some cheap place to live, but don't like to share rooms etc... if anyone would give any advise on finding job, accomodation, etc I would be grateful. Cheers Roky

  21. Hello, I thought I would just update you all and let you know how tight things are getting here since xmas. I was laid off from my job as an Office Administrator just before xmas. I have been sending out an average of 5 resumes a day for the past month. In total I have had 3 interviews, and 2 of those I did not get the job. I just came back from an interview tonight, for a office administrator for a chiropractor, the Doctor told us that she received over 300 responses for the position. 12 people were then chosen to come in for the interview (we spent an hour doing a group interview) and out of that only 3 were chosen to continue on for the one to one interview, after the group interview. Luckily for me I was one of the top 3 chosen to continue on for the face to face interview. Not sure if I will get the job, just pleased I made it that far. So things are not that rosy here in Perth. It is getting tougher to get a job, and competition for those jobs has really increased. A year ago, you might have had a few applicants for a job, now it is in the hundreds that are applying. My interview last Friday, I was told that 600 people apply for the position each month. Not trying to paint a negative picture... I am not giving up, each day, I keep applying for jobs, I know the right job will come around, it will just take time. I just wanted to give you a realistic view of the job market here in Perth. Karen

    Admin error at aspc

Hi all, we got an email last week apologising that due to admin error our application had been overlooked!!!!!! (We had phoned the previous night to find out what was going on). We now have case officer but i am begining to think they have lost documents as they have requested stuff that we have already sent. They have also requested form 80 Character assement to be compleated, has anyone else done one of these? It asks for most of the info that is on your application plus a list of all the countries visited in the last 10 years, names of anyone you know in Australia, it seems endless. More fuel to add to our frustration. Paul & Lou :arghh:
  24. Hi all... I've found myself out of work again!! (I was Bangalored) I am experienced office administrator with over 20 years experience. Does anyone know if their particular place of work is recruiting at the moment? If so, can you send me a private message with your company's website or contact information so I can follow up any potential leads? Many thanks in advance, Ali
  25. I have worked for 17 years as a administrator for the North West of England Hospitals, I have all the relevant experience and qualifications but they don't seem to be recognized as a skilled trade in Australia can anyone give advise on which route to go down next
