    abit of fire fighting

Thought i'd share another of my little aussie adventures with you The station i'm working on at the moment is part of the rural fire brigade as we have two old 70s fire engines and recently the boss managed to get permits to burn off the stubble and leftovers from harvest which is a pretty rare thing to get at this time of year! So after monitoring the humdity, temps and wind last night we decided to burn, the area was about 120 acres, first we ploughed a firebreak between the edge of the paddock and the bush/neighbours propertys, then the fun began!! We had one person on a motorbike starting the fire using a mix of 75% diesel and 25% petrol with a mini flamethrower where he'd ride and start a line of about 400 meters then repeat abit further up the paddock and two fire engines, a 4wd ute with water tank and pump and another vehicle monitoring, we all have uhf to keep in contact. My job was to ride the back of one of the firetrucks and douse the edges and put out anything that was getting out of control and crossing the fire breaks, trust me there was alot to do!!!! Now i've done buring last season but this was a whole new ball games as its rare to do this in the summer, we'd just had 30-40 degree weather!! and there was tinder dry windrows of hay in the paddock!! there was times we were driving through flames 8 foot high with thick smoke and the radiant heat was so high all i could do was hunch in a ball in the back of the firetruck behind the firewalls with the sprinklers cooling the sides of the truck!!! Real gives you an appreciation of what the fireys do and why you'd never want to be stuck anywhere near a bush fire!!!

    Starting to Panic abit !

Well as some of you know, my OH has become unemployed. He finished work last week, and we have about 10 weeks of his vaction pay to live on. I am working, however, my income just about covers the rent, and car payment and will leave us about $65.00 a week for food, fuel and everything else, when OH's money runs out. He has had 2 interviews for a job in Adelaide, however, it is now the waiting game... as they have to present it to head office to seek approval for the position. He also has applied for 2 other jobs one in Melbourne and one in Townsville, so far nothing, not even an interview. He is going to be picking up The West today and on Saturday, as these are the best days to look for jobs in the paper. He was supposed to get some work as a brickies labourer, however, this has not panned out. I am not pinning my hopes on the jobs through recruitment agencies, possibly because I have never had any luck with them. Has anyone ever gotten a job through a recuritment agency that has posted on Seek, if so would love to hear from you. Worse case scenerio for us is that OH can't find employment, and in 10 weeks time we will have to make a decision to head back to Canada. I know that for a family of 4 we won't be able to survive on $65 a week, and at least if we land back in Canada we will have family and friends who would be willing to put us up. So watch this space, hopefully I will be posting that OH found employment and that we can continue our lives here in Australia, or else I will be posting that we will be heading back to Canada. Just getting a bit worried.. hell I was less worried when we arrived 2 years ago, and had no jobs to come to and didn't know anyone. Cheers Karen

  6. Hellooooo I'm new here, so just a quick question. I'm already a perminant resident. And my mum (perm resident) and step dad (citizen). I'm studying back in UK and I have been back for 3 years, come back oz for visits. I've met a man here and we have been together for 2 and a bit years. What would be my best options for getting him over? We wish to start a life together there hence we havent moved into a place here so we can save money. Partner visa requires us to be living together which is no issue, but would a prospective marriage visa be the better option? We plan to get engaged and marry when we get there? I'm finding the options overwhelming. I am worrying about sponsoring him as I am studying and living off of savings. Could my mum sponsor him? Thank you so much if anyone could get back to me. x
  7. Hi, I'm after abit of help if possible I have successfully obtained my visa for OZ last year so that great news but I am now trying to assist my partner in getting his skills assessment done so we can go out, but it is totally different to mine due to practical assessment etc for the trade side, and I'm just not sure I am getting my head around it at all. We have started the paperwork but it just doesnt seem to have much to it, he has been in the industry for about 12 years so we have put down courses etc but wondered whether anyone has been through this proccess that could help? Especially when it comes to the work experience part as he uses all of the skills within his daily job, can you just put daily usage? They dont exactly give you alot of room to put to much. Cant work out if we are trying to make it more complicated than it is or we just arent getting it!!! Plus does anyone know how this trade is looking in NSW Please help:embarrassed:
