  1. I have occasionally been working on and off in Australia for the last 10 years, I am a freelance offshore supervisor(O&G) and nearly all of my work is carried out on offshore on vessels, I have never spent more than 100 days in Australia in any given year. My line of work is highly specialised and I am guessing there is only about 20 other people in the whole world with similar skills and experience still willing to go offshore and work. 90% of the jobs I do are less than 6 weeks duration(most are 5 week duration which is the standard length of an offshore swing for Aussie mariners). Originally for the first couple of years I was able to work on a 456 visa because of the specialist nature of the work and the short job durations, however for the last 2 years I have had to get a 457 visa and to get this I need to be sponsored by a company. The 457 however causes me great problems as the agency who sponsor the 457 do not have sufficient work for me to only work for them. I am often offered other work with other companies but have not be able to take it on as the whole visa issue cannot be sorted in a timely manner (lead in time for my projects is typically only about 2 weeks). Thee Agency has offered to subcontract me to these other companies so that the 457 can stay in place, however their mark-up is in the region of $500 per day(even though they claim this is a zero profit markup) and this makes it uneconomic for companies to then hire me. Is there any way I could hold my own 457 rater than be tied to a sponsor? I am 45 years old and operate my own UK Ltd company but fall well short of the turn over requirement to establish a branch office in Australia. I have no plans to permanently migrate to Australia. I don't mind paying tax either.
  2. Hello, i am a doctor by profession and will be coming to Melbourne late December/Early January to give my AMC clinical exam due in late Feb/early March . I will have business short stay subclass 456 visa which allows me to stay in Australia for upto 3months with multiple entries for a year. hopefully, after successful completion of my exam, ill be searching a job there and will be permanently settling there. But i have nothing planned as yet, that is why im very confused, and need some guidance. 1) I know not a single soul on Aussie land and will be coming alone. Can anyone guide how much will be the expense monthly (considering i will not be able to work with subclass 456 visa) 2) How to get a place to live for at least 3 months before reaching australia? 3) Which is a nice place to settle initially? 4) is there some way to open a bank account before coming to Australia? Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated. I may ask other questions when they come in my mind Regards

    Question about 456 to a 457 visa

Hi all I have a question about visa's as I am currently in the UK and my company is reselling our technology to a company in Oz. This new company have offered me a full time job and said we should do the following: "your current employer should apply for a "short term working visa-456" which will let you enter Australia and allow you to work for a period of 12 months, provided you exit the country every 3 months. Once you are in Australia, we will immediately try to convert your 456 to 457. The process time for a 457 is app. 3 months, thus you would not have to exit the country if we get it sorted on time." I am concerned that there are a lot of ifs, thens and maybe's. Whole process seems a it rushed and dodgy. Other issue I have is I got to asia for 4 weeks in 10 days so if it all falls through will I not struggle to get a working holiday visa? A very stressed bdobson! Really appreciate any help!
  4. Hi All OH and I are waiting to hear from Engineers Australia to confirm his role as a civil / structural engineer, which is on the CSL. We were then hoping to apply for 176 visa (i think) via an agent, however I understand the process takes ages and we are both keen to get there asap. I have seen loads of jobs advertised for civil / structural engineers and wondered how easy it is to get a business sponser. Can any company sponser an immigrant or are only chosen companies able to? Is it better to go through a recruitment agency, let them know the situation regarding visas and hope that they place you? Or apply directly to any company advertising and plead to be sponsored? Sorry, its a long one! Hope someone can help! Many thanks!!!! Kirsti:chatterbox:

    456 Business Visa questions

Hello all, I have had an offer of employment from a company in Melbourne. As they are in the final process of gaining the ability to be able to sponsor employees via the 457 visa, they have offered me a quick way to get out to Melbourne via a 456 temporary visa. I will be packing up everything including my wife, 5 kids and all our worldly goods to move out to Melbourne and it seems a very large risk what with only having 3 months guaranteed in Melbourne! I have a number of questions I hope someone will be able to help me with; What are the disadvantages of the 456 visa (such as not being able to register for medicare)? When the 457 permanent visa is granted, do I have to leave the country in order to come back into Australia on the 457? If there is a period between the 456 and the 457 visa, can I get a 'bridging' visa easily? Does anyone have any suggestions/comment that might help me please? Many thanks in advance
