  5. 'Our Currency lads and lasses are a fine interesting race, and do honour to the country whence they originated. The name is a sufficient passport to esteem with all the well-informed and right-feeling portion of our population; but it is most laughable to see the capers some of our drunken old Sterling madonnas will occasionally cut over their Currency adversaries in a quarrel. It is then, 'You saucy baggage, how dare you set up your Currency crest at me? I am Sterling, and that I'll let you know!' In 19th century Australia the distinction between native-born Australians and migrants was played out lexically as a battle between currency and sterling. In the early days of the colony there were coins and notes of many kinds, from various countries. These were called currency, whereas English gold pieces were called sterling - sterling being the genuine thing in sharp contradistinction to the mixty-maxty mongrel currency. By the 1820s these two terms had widened their application and were being used to describe two groups of people in the colony. Currency applied to those native to Australia, that is, those born here. Sterling referred to non-convict, British-born residents. These native-born currency lads and lasses began to speak a new language. Outsiders comment on their accent and the 'colonial phraseology'. Some of this colonial language was borrowed from Aboriginal languages, and some of it was generated internally. The irony is that many of the expressions which are contemptuously categorised as 'colonial' are in fact English. But they are not sterling English, not the language of the now respectable London or polite society. These Australian words are a mongrel breed, some of them are underworld terms, and many are words from British dialects, which remained dialectal in Britain, but which became mainstream in Australian English. There developed here a language that was in subversive opposition to the now-emerging Received British English. Shifts in the meaning of standard English words - 'mate' is a good example - reflected Australian social ideals which differed from the British

  9. Hi there, i previously posted this in the wrong section so hope i have the right one this time. Any advice welcome im just looking for a bit of help for my trip. Bit of background. Currently just left university and looking to head over to Aus and experience life outside my small town. Was hoping to head somewhere hot and near the coast on a working holiday visa. Im not really into the big city life so first piece of advice id like is where should i head. Through the research i have done i think queensland would be an area id like to visit. Somewhere like Coolangatta or somewhere with a nice surf etc, any ideas? Would prefer somewhere not full of tourists but know this will be hard to avoid and probably necessary if i want to find work. Next question Im hoping to come as soon as the visa process will allow but travelling alone and away from family for the first time im concerned about Christmas on the other side of the world. Does anyone have any experience of this? Im seriously considering holding off until January for this reason. Final question (sorry for long post) Im pretty skint and will need to get a bank loan to come. Is there much chance of finding a stable job for the 6 months giving me the security of permanent accommodation etc. Thank you in advance

  18. My family are relocating to the Sunshine Coast in November and are looking for a house to rent. We've looked at holiday lets but because of the time of year they are either extremely expensive or don't have availability over Christmas. We'd like to find a house in the Maroochy/Alex Hills/Cotton Tree/Mooloolaba areas with 3 beds or more and aircon. (A pool would be nice but it's not essential.) We're a professional couple with teenage children and don't want to pay any more than $450 a week. Can anyone help me please??

  24. Hi all.. My OH has been offered job in NSW. We are now just at the beginning of 457 visa process. Its a move we have been looking at for a few years. We have 3 kids 2 of which are from my previous marriage. Ex emmigrated jan/feb this year with his wife and new family to new zealand and we had a stat dec drawn up which he actually signed with no prob at solicitors before he left. I was told that was all i needed?!? :arghh: Prob is our companies migration agent has come back this morning and said they also need a copy of his passport and for him and i to both sign a form sounds simple but ive now got to track him down in new zealand which is going to slow things down quite abit! Has anyone else come across this? Needing more than stat dec i mean not the issues with ex husband.. alot of us have 1 of them  Thanks for reading any info greatfully received.
  25. I have many experience within the construction field as a labourer, concrete finisher and a bit of experience as a bricklayer. In addition, I have a couple of years experience as a cook and a cleaner (domestic and commercial). I currently live in Europe, so I would need sponsorship. I am a hard worker and a quick learner. Hopefully someone has a job to offer me! I am willing to take any job. Thanks!
