  1. Hi, I am a PE teacher and been applying for lots of jobs in Melbourne. However I haven't had much luck and was wondering if anyone has any experience with the whole Key Selection Criteria thing? I've tried phoning schools to get feedback but not 1 person ever phones back anyway if anyone has any info/advice/tips then I'd love to hear from them! (PLEASE!!) cheers in advance Iain
  2. Hi - was just wondering if there are any primary school teachers out there who are in the process of applying to emigrate or have already done so?? I am a primary teacher and have been told that our job is not on the skills in demand list and so I do not qualify in terms of points!! I was devastated when I heard this!! Apparently if I was a secondary teacher or pre-school one there would be no problem. I've been advised that the only way I can get into Oz is to apply for a 'regional sponsored visa' and not all states offer this. We want to settle in WA , but they haven't opened their gates for regional sponsored visas. At present, although I have been qualifed and taught for 17 years, i am currently teaching 2 days a week - as my youngest is still not at school . I have been told I have to be teaching a minimum of 20 hrs a week for a minimum of 12 mths before I can apply. Can anyone help me>? Any teachers come across a similar situation or is there something I haven't realised yet?? Would REALLY appreciate any help!! I'm planning to go back 4 days a week in Sept instead of 2 so I can get my 20 hrs a week under my belt!! Thanks a million! Regards Caroline, Mark, Caitlin, Eleanor and Lydia :arghh:
  3. Hi! We have our visa and are travelling over to Oz in October. Im a primary teacher and currently registering with QLD Board of ED etc.... I was just wondering how you go about working as a Peri piano teacher in primary schools or if there would be any demand if I were to teach piano privately at home??? Thanks for any info dugong
  4. Hi all, having trawled thru teachNSW site & actually spoken to a person, I've just found out that I can't even apply for the overseas teachers course until they consider my degree transcripts. I did an communication studs deg & a primary PGCE. I can remember having to supply details of having sufficient 'suitable' content within my comm. studs degree to satisfy the PGCE course requirements, so I'm hoping it will be the same over here. Anyone else had a similar experience, or even a knock-back? It would make life difficult if I couldn't work in Australia as a teacher, after 12years of doing it in the UK. Am I worrying about nothing?
  5. Hi there everyone. We have been a fan of this site for ages now but have never posted before. Just looking for a little help and guidance i guess, hoping someone can help...... We are going to Perth in March for our first ever visit, sooooo excited!! I am a teacher and have been for over ten years. I guess my main worry is, are there many jobs out there for teachers? we have been led to believe that there are but my wife is very much in need of some reassurance at the moment. If anyone out there has any advice on teaching/teaching jobs and is willing to share their experience's, good or bad, with us then we would be sincerely grateful. Thanks everyone. Pete

  8. I am posting on behalf of the other half as we are due to be in Sydney at the end of July. I will be the bread winner for the beginning as I am on an internal works transfer but she has no job lined up. She has been a primary school teacher for 4 years now and hopes to get a job in Sydney in the start of their school year which I believe is end of January time. Has anybody gone through the same experience? Are there any primary school teacher jobs going generally? What is the supply teacher scene like? Also in between times she is thinking of passing the time in Kindergarten. Are these positions widely available? If so whats the money like. Thanks in advance......Boyfiend trying to get girlfriend off beach

    Special Needs teachers.

I am currently a special needs teacher in the U.K working in a large special school for pupils with profound and complex learning dificulties. I love my job so want to continue in this teaching role in Australia. I have a BA in primary education and have nearly finished the first year of a Post grad diploma in special needs education (year one will give me a PGCE so that i can get teacher registration in Aus) It would be really great to hear from anyone who has information about special schools in Melbourne or can direct me to web sites with relevent info. We hope to get to Aus by mid 2008 Thanks. :spinny:
  11. Hi, Myself & my husband have got our skills approved and are waiting to be assigned a CO in order to complete the final stages of out 136 application. I'd like to soon start looking for work and would welcome any salary advice. Currently, I am on a UPS1 as a secondary school music teacher and should go through to UPS2 by September. Is the UPS scale recognised? I have approx. 10 yrs experience including running a department. Can anyone tell me how this would maybe translate into the Australian pay scale? Or advise where I can get some further assistance. On a separate note - how long does it take to be assigned a CO? Put our form in August 07, got a receipt in Dec 07 still waiting? And then when you get a CO? What time scales can you expect? :nah: Many thanks Colette
  12. I had a great plan - do a PGCE part time, qualify as a teacher , get sponsership from WA and go to Aus. The plan was going well - I got onto a course had less than a year until I qualify and then WA stopped sponsership for primary teachers! I have read numerous stories outlining that it is difficult if not impossible to get a job in Aus as a teacher. Is this the case? I am desperate to get to Aus and feel like the last year of study has been worthless. I have a young son (2 years) and a husband so the WA option would have been perfect as they would have guaranteed a job on arrival. I am currently seeking a plan B. Has anyone got any ideas? Thanking you in advance for you help. Mary

    IELTS for teachers?

Hi all Sorry this is long and involved (just posted on general dilemmas but this area seems more appropriate). My OH is getting skills assessed as a secondary school teacher and as part of the assessment needs to demonstrate her command of english. She can do so without the need to sit an IELTS but if she did need to sit the IELTS would have needed to sit the academic version. So we're assuming she'll successfully be assessed without IELTS at this point. We're applying on the skilled 176 visa which of course asks again for evidence of ability in english. To get beyond the pass mark she'll need to sit the exam but it suggests it only needs to be the general version (not the academic). Does anyone have experience of applying as a teacher and being in the same situation? She absolutley doesn't want to sit either but if she has to would prefer the less intensive version! I'd ask our agent but we don't have one (that may change the way we're going!) Any help greatly appreciated. Dave, Emma (teacher) and the boys

  15. Hi, I just want to know if any teachers have had any experience, or knows of anyone who has, of getting a Skilled – Independent (Migrant) visa (subclass 175) under the following circumstances: 33 years old: 25 points IELTS score above 7.0 in all 4 areas: 25 points Skills Assessment Certificate from Teaching Australia: 60 points Work experience: Worked as a supply teacher for an average of 3 days per week for 3 of the last 4 years, including working as a tutor for an average for 4 hours per week for 3 of the last 4 years. I am getting conflicting information from two employees at the Australian High Commission in London; namely, regarding whether I can be eligible for 10 points for my work experience. Kind Regards, Gary J Email: gary_leech2004@hotmail.com

    Teachers help.

Hi, My wife and I have recently decided to move over and are starting to do the research. I am a teacher (HOD) and she works for the Environment Agency, we are hopefull of getting our visas. I have looked at teaching when I get over but it seems a very difficult process and I am confused as to exactly how this would work. Looking at the NSW Gov pages, am I right to assume that we need to move over, then and only then, do I start to try and get a teaching job? Ideally, we would not want to start in Sydney but would prefer one of the outlying towns would this be a problem? Is the system for securing a teaching post different around the country? Have any other teachers succeeded and could you share your experiences? Cheers

  21. Hello there Im a primary school teacher(31yrs) and wondered what the job prospects are like for pommy primary teachers in Aus? (particularly The Sunshine Coast-Maroochydore area) We backpacked around Oz in 2003/4 and I worked as a casual relief teacher in Vic and Queensland. I got quite a bit of work as a relief teacher but have heard that securing a permanent teaching position is difficult. :? Should I consider the private school sector? We are now well in to the immi process and have received my skills assessment from Teaching Australia. My partner is a landscape gardener. Any one know what the job prospects are like in this field of work? We are appling under skilled family sponsored visa 138 and his skills arent being assessed, just mine. Apols if all this sounds a bit waffly im just writing as I think!!!  Thanks for any advice!

    Calling all teachers

Hi, I am a primary teacher and I'm off to QLD in Feb. I think I will try to get some supply work and then apply for a pemanent post. If you have ANY help or advice including handy websites I would be eternally grateful if you could pass them on. I'm not even sure how to find the sort of stuff which is taught - all I can find are airy fairy philosophy of teaching and learning when I need the meaty bits. Do they 'do' the Romans and such like? Appreciately Rebecca
  23. My wife is a teacher. She completed her degree course in 1995 (she's 33) The university (Greenwich) don't keep records or the required transcript for more than 10 years. Does anyone have any experience and what can we do? Thanks
