    To Move Or Stay

My OH is bricklayer (for over 20 years) if we don't do it now we will never do it? We have two children aged 16 and 10 the oldest does not want to come with us:sad:I don't know where to start with anything? Any comments would be great. THANKS Paula & Dave

  4. Hi Was just wondering if anyone out there could share their views on the following. We decided last October that we were going to move to Melbourne to be closer to Hubby's Father and Step Mum. They were very encouraging and agreed to sponsor us. Hubby applied for TRA as a computer technician and was successful. We decided to put the house up for sale as we have lots of loans that are draining finances. By selling the house we could clear the debt but it would leave us with no equity although we would have a lot more disposable income to save. I have just recently qualified as a primary school teacher. Unfortunately i did a three year degree instead of the four years required by Australia. I am now in the process of topping up an old Open University qualification which will give me the extra year. My children(15 & 12) are from a previous marriage. They have a great relationship with their father who is understandably heart broken at the prospect of moving to the other side of the world. We have a court case due 3rd May to try and get permission for us to take the children out of the country. My ex recognises that this would be a good opportunity for them but wants us to stipulate that we will bring them back for four weeks each year. Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction. We found a buyer for the house, I was gaining the qualifications needed to work, My ex was coming round to us leaving. Then Saturday afternoon my husband spoke to his Dad in Melbourne who whilst re-iterating that they still want us to come proceeded to tell us that it was highly unlikely that we would be able to get anywhere to rent, that we would probably not be able to afford to buy a car which is essential for getting to work and that it would be near on impossible for me to get any work as there is already too many teachers in Melbourne. This made us seriously think about whether or not it was a good idea to send off the 138 visa application we have just completed. To cap it all off Sunday morning we awoke to an answering machine message informing us that our buyer has had to pull out of the sale of the house due to being declined a mortgage. I would really appreciate any comments or views you may have on our situation. We really want to make a go of it in OZ but i dont want to mess up the kids education and end up jobless and homeless. Sorry to go on but i am really torn as to what to do for the best.
  5. Hy I am assuming that the majority of people who move to Oz rent first before buying a house. But where did you stay when you first got off the plane ? Was it a hotel friends or some other form ? For how long ?

Do we stay or do we go...

Hi me and my wife are seriously considering the big move to OZ but are just worried if its the right thing to do.We went on holiday for a month at christmas and fell in love with the place everone was just so friendly and the beachs are paradise. We can't help thinking we would be crazy not to go BUT the worry is that was a holiday what would it be like to be there full time with out loved ones etc. Is it really worth all the hard work and worry to get there. 2 couples who are our friends have already applied and are worried we could regret not going as well then can't get in if we changed our minds later on. We would like to live in sunshine coast area I am 32 and am a qualified painter and decorator and my wife is 30 and a hairdresser with no children. Does any one live in this area ? Any advice would be great thanks Dan

  8. Can anyone out there recommend accomodation in Brisbane/Gold Coast? We are visiting in June and I'm not sure where to stay, probably prefer a holiday home or apartments. Just really want to know if anyone has stayed anywhere nice that they can recommend!!!!! Regards Lindsay
  9. We are due to move over to Brisband in March/April, when we get there I would really like a temporary furnished property for a couple of weeks as a base preferably just outside the city. I have tried a couple of place but they seem to be playing on the fact we may be arriving with money and charging a bomb....Any suggestions, we have a four year old as well - I was also wondering if anyone could suggest some nice suburbs within a 30min communte so Sumner?
  10. HI everyone, I just really need to let everyone out there know about this great service I've found for all the families arriving off the aeroplane and needing a home from home enviornment. Check out this web site http://www.familyfriendlyhomes.com.au they provide fully furnished houses to rent in Brisbane, equiped even down to the beach towels ! What a great way to start your Aussie experience! I contacted Karen with initial enquiries and she responded quickly and then offered to give me a call so that I could start asking some of the ten thousand questions that I have about immigrating and found her very helpful and personable. Would recommend them to anyone.
  11. As new members, I thought I would ask the audience for their advice! We were granted our visas in April 2005, activated them in Oz in Nov 2005 and are still twiddling our thumbs in the UK waiting to go. Can't help but panic every day about the future and know we are so lucky to be granted our visas, however the unknown in Oz scares the life out of us! We are still in the UK due to work commitments and are currently planning on making the move March/April next year (this is the third date we have given ourselves....). We don't want to sell our home 'just in case' it doesn't work out, so plan to rent out for 12 months to let ourselves settle in. Has anyone else done this with their property? Any tips/nightmares or advice? Does everyone feel this way before they go? Any info would be very much appreciated Thanks The Rays
  12. Hi just been offered a lecturing job at Monash in Melbourne. I'm 40, and am going through a divorce (no kids) in the UK. The wage on offer isn't very good, about 56K, but I've been offered rapid promotion. I'm currently working in Liverpool. I'm quite a sociable bloke, as it goes. But I'm hesitant about going by myself. Can people advise me on possible steps for setting up a social network in Melbourne? Is that wage really terrible? (Should be bringing about £60k once house sold/divorce settled-thinking of an inner city 1 bed flat).

  14. Does anyone know if we can travel to Australia on a Tourist visa and then apply for our Temporary Business Long Stay visa while in Australia? My partner has a job offer from an Australian Company who have submitted an application to sponsor both of us to come to OZ - We are now just waiting for them to give us a TRN number in order for us to submit our application. However we are due to fly out of the UK on 2nd December! Therefore if we are allowed, we would rather apply on arrival to OZ on a Tourist visa and then apply to stay while in OZ? Any ideas/comments???? Thanks

    Stay at home mum

My husband and I are seriously thinking about moving to Australia, and reading through this forum many of my thoughts and dilema's have already been answered, except for a couple. What age do children start school - reception? What do stay at home mums do - apart from housework and shopping - with their younger sibblings? Are there mums and tots groups? Music Time etc? I am a very sociable mum who loves a good natter. I look forward to hearing from anyone!
