  1. My wife and I are in the very early stages of applying to move from the UK to Australia, under what is most likely going to be a skilled regional visa. We are focusing on the Brisbane area (outside the CBD) and Sunshine Coast, apologies its a big area hence the reason for the post - which of the two is more suitable for a young family (we have 3 daughters 8, 5 and 2) with regards to good schools and respectable neighborhoods with professionals? We want to ideally live by the coast, walking distance, have cafes shops, bars etc but not too over crowded, also not empty. Chances are I will have to commute to Brisbane, as I work in finance. Would love to hear from anyone who may be able to help - happy to provide more info if my post is too vague. Thanks
  2. trHi, My husband is being relocated to Sydney in September and we are faced with the tricky task of finding a school for now four year old from London. I know she is still young but we only plan to be in Sydney for 2/3 years and then move back to the UK. Having already had over 18 months of learning to read and write (as they start earlier with this in the UK) we have been advised to put her into year 1. She adores what she calls 'work' and her teachers in the UK, teachers I know in Sydney and two educational consultants have recommended this would the best move especially since we would prefer her not to be too far behind when we come back to the UK. We wanted to send her to a Public school but they refuse to even asses her for a Year 1 place. Does anyone have any views or experience with this situation? Or found a private school that worked well in this situation? Any thoughts or ideas so appreciated. It seems so daunting with never having been to Sydney and not being able to look around schools before we leave the UK. We were thinking of northern beaches as where we may base ourselves but again this is not set in stone. Thank you!
  3. Any idea what sort of documentation is typically required when applying for or starting a new school? I'm looking at Queensland in particular. I'm presuming general proof of ID, possibly some sort of handover document from their school in the UK, possibly medical documents (?)... Any general info or links to relevant posts would be appreciated. Regards BFB
  4. The best schools are located in predominately the east and south-east of Melbourne. There area also a couple of other great performing schools on the Mornington Peninsula and Werribee.
  5. A couple of questions on the 482 TSS visa I’m hoping this forum can help me with.... Firstly I’m trying to find out the exact health requirements for a 482 visa. What do we need to prove when applying for this visa? I’m finding the home affairs website unclear. Secondly, do we need I pay for my child’s school in Victoria on a 482? The appropriate website hasn’t been updated since the 482 was introduced! So anyone who is living in Victoria know what happens?? TIA!

    Moving To Darwin

Hi There, I have just been granted my nomination for a Skilled Worker Regional Visa by NT government. We were initially planning on moving to Perth or Adelaide as we have family/friends there but NT gave us the sponsor. We are a bit clueless on the suburbs/areas in Darwin and any help or information would be appreciated. We have two young kids, one aged 3 and a baby coming up on a year old. Where would be the best suburbs for us looking to rent a 4 bedroom property? Ideally somewhere with good schools and plenty of parks. Thanks, G
  7. My husband has the opportunity to get a job in Sydney and i always said it was the one place i would go... so here we are considering shipping our little family early next year which is rather daunting. My son is 3 (29th May 2014) so i presume he won't be starting school for a while which seems odd as he seems school ready here but that might just be because of the nursery/pre-school he is at here. And my daughter currently does 2 days at a nursery. We're thinking we'll live there for a few years and then return to the UK but i worry about my son being behind in terms of education when we come back because of starting school so much later in Oz. Has anyone found this? and when would he actually start school? I presume we're not entitled to any sort of funding like you get in the UK with the 15 hours. Is there the opportunity for them both to do morning child care on a few days a week? We're look at living in the suburbs around Manly which i presume we need to secure first before even looking at child care places. Thank you for any advice - feeling totally clueless and rather daunted by the prospect!

    Hervey Bay and surrounds

We're looking to settle in Hervey Bay. Originally being from Brisbane I can't envisage us living back in a big city. Does anyone have any links with HB and know if it would be well suited for a family of four with their children of Primary school age. What is the employment scenario like there? I've looked online and that's been helpful but I was hoping some of you would be able to give their insight. Are there any areas around HB (Not Maryborough) that you think is worth checking out? Keen to go anywhere from Bribie Island area right up towards Bundy but not quite as far as that! HB preferable.
  9. Hi, I moved to Sydney (from London) 13 years ago and have finally had enough of the rat race. I'm moving with my family to the Sunshine Coast and looking for advice about the best locations for beaches, shops, schools etc My 2 boys have special needs and one will need to go to a special school - it appears that Nambour and Currimundi are the only options. My other boy has mild autism so I'm hoping to find a location that is best placed for him i.e. Primary schools that have a good reputation for helping kids on the spectrum and plenty of local therapists. If you have kids with special needs and live in the Sunshine Coast, I'd love to hear your thoughts and advice on our move to the Sunny Coast. Thanks Sue

    Moving to Melbourne

Greetings all, This is my first post here. I will be moving to Melbourne on a Permanent Residency Visa in September 2015 and am going through the roller-coaster of emotions! Moving with my family (wife and two young children) I am eager to find out more and secure accommodation and employment. We have been looking at the Brighton area and feel it is a good fit for us, my daughters at 2 and 4 and we feel the schools and just right for them. I am a secondary Lead Teacher of Science and aim to take a natural progression up to Head of Department. Any advice on area, Schools, jobs, and finding short and long term rentals will be greatly appreciated! Thank you D
  13. Just decided to move to the sunshine coast in March 2015 with two young kids (4 and 6) as my partner has a job in Maroochydore. I do destination marketing and travel account management in the UK currently. Any advice on the travel industry in the area would be much appreciated - what kind of travel companies there are and where most are located. Also, any advice on where would be best to live for a sense of community, good schools and kid safe beaches would be very helpful. Getting excited now!
  14. Hello all, I'm new to the forum, we're moving over to Canberra early September so in frantic mode of trying to get everything organised both to leave the UK and to arrive in Canberra! I have 2 children - a son age 12 and a daughter age 6. One of my biggest concerns is finding the right schools for them, and then this will dictate the area we need to find a rental in. We're looking at government schools, I'm very keen on Alfred Deakin as a High School so now need to find a good primary school in the same 'priority placement'/catchment area. I think we've narrowed this down to either Garran Primary or Curtin Primary. Both sound very good - Garran has the best academic results, Curtin seems good academically too and I liked them most from the info on their website. I did however read some things in the Validation report for Curtin that made me a bit uncomfortable... Does anyone have children at either of these Primary Schools, or perhaps know someone who teaches there? I'm looking to get a bit of first hand insight into the 'personality' of the schools, whether you're happy with the school, what are the good and bad points etc. Any insight would be most welcome! If anyone has children at Alfred Deakin, would be great to get a first hand view on that too please. Thanks very much! Karen
  15. Hi, i just wondered weather anyone had any opinions on the Quinns beach primary school, the website looks great but just wondered if anyone had any experience with the school? I'm hoping for my little boy to go there. Any other advice or recommendations/ enrolment or general advice on schools are very welcome!
  16. My daughter is currently at the end of year 10 (15 years old) and will be starting year 11 in September. One year from now she will be finishing year 11 and completing her exams. Would it be best to make the move at the end of year 11 or after her A-levels? (A-levels are years 12 and 13). I understand that schools in Australia have different timings and holidays, so I would like to know at which point in the year we'd be moving to, and what you would suggest. Any personal experience would be great to hear too! Thanks a lot.
  17. Hi all, We're planning a potential move from the UK into the area, and have two girls of 12 and 16. We're interested in high schools we could get to from Thirroul. I'm seeing Keira, Bulli and Corrimal High Schools showing up local to Thirroul, and then there's the Performing Arts High School in Wollongong, which might appeal to our dancers. One of the things we're interested in is whether schools are using innovative new ways to teach, eg through project-based learning, use of technology, etc. What's the vibe out there? Thanks! Simon & Jackie

    Teaching in Brisbane

Hi All, I am a recently qualified teacher but trained in post compulsory ed in london and therefore do not have a QTS but do have a PGCE. I finished training last year so am currently doing my first year of classroom teaching. I have been doing supply working in primary, secondary food technology and art (my specialism) at a school for BESD kids, this is all in my first term, we shall see what the rest of the year brings! My brother lives in brisbane and has been begging me to come visit for years. I decided that I wanted to visit on the working visa and stay for a year. I am trying to work out if I can teach in Oz and how I should go about it. I have read so much but would appreciate any advice! I am particularly wondering: Do I need to have QTLS or QTS to be recognised? Do I have to register with the Queensland college of teaching (QCT)? Can I work on supply? Is there a minimum amount of experience required? Thank you!!
  19. Hi I am a uk qualified primary teacher with (QTS) who moved out to oz with our family in 2005. It just hasn't worked out the way we thought it would over here , I've never been able to secure a FT teaching post, Husband has always been very keen to go back I'm wavering wondering what is the best thing to do.Our children also happy enough to go back one 16 one 10. My concerns are whether I would be able to get work, happy to do supply to gain experience and how our older child would get on at school, he has just completed grade 10 and does well. He want a to go to university/ army to do electrical/mechanical engineering degree and had planned to apply to the oz army officer training college in Canberra. We are thinking about moving back to Wales , brecon area. Any advice welcome:)
  20. We are moving to Perth next Easter and I am just looking at schools for my two children. I have looked at Kingsway Christian College (as I think we will be living in the northern suburbs) and wondered if anyone on this forum has children there or has any other knowledge of the school and would be willing to give me your opinion of it! Thanks.

  22. I am relocating my family to Sydney in September on a Business sponsored 457 visa. We have two young girls aged 6 and 4. My office is based in Neutral Bay but we are likely to live in the Eastern suburbs, Rose bay or Bronte as we have friends in these areas. Mosman is also an option as it will be close to work. Can anyone help with one or all of the following questions. What are the good schools to look at? How difficult will It be to enrol in the schools if we don't arrive until September? Should we do this before we leave? Will my girls get into Catholic schools if they are not baptised although I am a Catholic? How negotiable is the rental market, 3 bed houses seem to be in the region of $1200 a week upwards? How long would the commute be from Rose bay to Neutral bay if I was driving at 7am? Can my wife work on my business sponsored 457 visa? We are planning to take a container of furniture. Is there any point bringing white goods and TV's? Will they be compatable? I have tons more questions but any help with these would be great Thanks in Advance Mark
  23. Hi all .. Really glad we found this site as we're at the early stages of looking at a job for me within finance in Sydney. I guess at this stage any guidance or advice would be great so feel free to tell us the good, bad and ugly on schools and accommodation in Sydney .... Private or state, manly or bondi, ???? Many thanks in advance B and B
  24. So I landed in Sydney this morning. Now, we all now it's a long flight but... CRAP it's a looooong flight! I thought the 'novelty' of flying alone without the kids would fuel the journey (ie movies and Jacke Daniels) but no. It got old about 3 hours in. But hey. I'm here and after a very wet exit from the airport, the sun came out! I'm here for a week on my own having a couple of meetings but also looking at some suburbs mainly in the Northern Beaches. I'm also booked in to see a couple of schools and plan to snoop around some houses too. Will update here on how it goes. But feel free to get in touch if you're thinking about that area and would like some 'eyes on the ground'. Also, feel free to get in touch if you're in the area and have got some spare time for an Oz/Move/School/Kid brain dump over a coffee!

    Moving over in January

Hi There, I am after you advice! I am currently in the process of agreeing a contract that would see myself and y family move over to Australia as of January with me coming over 1st and the family to follow sometime in March/April. Now i will be based in South Australia covering western Melbourne over to Adelaide and everything in between and we need to decide on area in which to relocate. Firstly the area has to be suitable for me with good road transport links, good schools for my 14 & 10 yr old and enough entertainment to keep everyone occupied. My son is a very keen footballer who is currently at a proffessional club over hear so would be looking to play a decent level and my daughter is a very keen gymnast and swimmer so again somewhere for them. We are looking at the Highton, Torquay areas and wondered how this area would suit us. My wifes family happen to live in Torquay in the UK and for sentimental reasons she is keen on living hear but is not overly worried as long as we are only 30-45 minutes from the sea. We are looking at modern style housing in a family area with plenty of kids to keep my youngsters occupied. I would be very grateful if you could assist me as we have just of 11 weeks before i have to depart and having only found out about the move this weeks makes things all a little scary (as you can imagine) Regards Craig
