Hi, Just after a bit of advice for a friend please? My friend is about to gain his 176 SS visa for WA, although he is now thinking he would prefer QLD after he has done some traveling. I understand that "officially" he should go to WA for 2 years and then he came move to another state. He has a job offer for a company in QLD also? Can anyone give some advice on how immigration look at this? and what his options are?? thanks!:notworthy:

Hi folks, Sorry if this has been answered previously but I've had a look and cannot find an answer to my specific question. I'm from the UK and have been offered a job in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I'm about to fill in my visa forms and have to start thinking about healthcare cover for my family (myself, girlfriend and 2yr old daughter). As many of you will know, I require private healthcare for my family in order for my visa application to be approved, even though we will not be in the country to use it. We are eligable for Medicare through the reciprocal agreement as we are from the UK but this doesn't apply until we are in Australia. In light of all this, I'm looking for the cheapest private healthcare cover around, that still meets the requirements of the 457 visa: does anyone have any experience of which insurance companies are the cheapest? The plan is to reassess my healthcare options when in Australia and just pay for the cheapest product available for visa purposes. Does anyone have any experience/suggestions on any of the above? Thanks, Dariuzthepole

Hi, is there anyone on this whose child/children goes to or has gone to Caloundra State Primary School? We are currently in Gympie and looking to move to Caloundra in two months time, we can't decide whether to send our daughter (who will be commencing Grade 1 in January) to Caloundra State Primary or Meridan State College. Can anyone shed any light on either of these schools for us? Thanks.

However I am unsure what year I will go into. Some people haave said they went straight into Australian yr 11 after their GCSE's, other say they had to go back a year into Australian year 10. Im confused  What year will I go into? I will turn 17 in Feb 2013. I am on track to get A's in my GCSE's. Any answers would be appreciated, thanks :cute:

Hi................ We are looking at these areas, basically because i would like to be near a big hospital as i am a nurse, i would like to be close to the night life in CBD, and CBD as my partner will be driving a cab for Black & White Cabs, and we can always hop on a train to the Gold Coast when we wish, being close to Roma Street Station... We are coming over for a year, maybe longer, but we will need a fully furnished two bedroom air conditioned house for twelve months, any thoughts and opinions most welcome. Look forward to meeting any expats when we arrive......... Any thoughts on this property? http://www.rs.realestate.com.au/property-apartment-qld-spring+hill-404812940 Thanks

In the last six months or so there's been fairly substantial changes to the way your basic compulsory qualifications have been presented; you'll see an advert asking for "A generic, SGS and S1, S2, S3" but most of them have changed their names which is really going to confuse you when you go to apply for them, so here's a summary: The Generic Passport is the mining equivalent of the blue/white card, but is increasingly becoming known as Standard 11. It's increased from 1 to 3 days but you can get RPL if you've been active on a mine site and is now easier to get renewed because of this The BMA passport, previously known as an SGS is now three days long and can only be provided through BMA themselves these days. There's currently a huge backlog as there are very limited providers (4 weeks at the moment) S1, S2, S3 (basic supervisor course) has already been through a name change to G1, G8, G9 but has undergone another to RIIRIS301A, RIIOHS301A, RIICOM301A. It's normally 3 days but I've seen 4-5 days advertised too. Cheers

Hi We are thinking of moving to QLD in 2013. At the moment in the UK my 12 year old son plays full time tennis. Do you know of any good tennis clubs/coaches/academies in Brisbane or the Gold Coast. I know there is the Pat Cash one on Hope Island, but looks quite expensive. Thanks heaps

Hi We are Australians living in the UK and thinking of returning to Queensland. We weren't thinking of coming back for another couple of years but have just been told that GCSE's obtained in the UK have no relevance in Australia. So we are now panicking thinking my daughter needs to be back in Australia for years 11 and 12. She is currently in year 9 in the UK and would be the same in Australia. How tough would it be returning just for year 12? do you think it is imperative she does both years in Australia? Any advice would be greatly received. thank you Theresa

Hi, we are moving to OZ this november. We r a family with 4 children, (13,11,9,3)permanent residents visa subclass 176. Looking for public schools in the area. We are trying to :unsure:decide between 1) staying in Gold Coast, that is the suburbs north of Coolongatta airport, like Robina, Varsity Lakes, Merrimac or Pacific Pines. OR 2) heading south of the airport, cross the state border and staying in Tweed heads NSW. Factors affecting our choice are the following - our 3rd son is dyslexic, and requires help reading. We would ideally like a school with good support for slow readers. - our youngest daughter will be 4 in early July. This means if we r in NSW, she gets to goto preschool in Jan2012, but in Queensland, she will start Prep in Jan 2014. The Big difference there is making us lean towards NSW of course. - We have lived in the city all our lives in Malaysia, and I wonder if Tweed heads area has all the perks like there are in the other Gold Coast suburbs : like movie theatres, malls, and parks. - Are halal meat stores easy to come by in Tweed heads? I know they are in abundance in Surfers paradise and surrounding areas. - a lower cost of living would obviously be the more desired option, but not at the expense of being too far away from amenities that we are used to. - will we feel far away from everything if we decide to stay in Tweed heads NSW, seeing that the capital city (sydney) is so far away, or do you think we will be travelling into Queesnalnd for most of our shopping and entertainment? - which is better, the NSW school system or the Queesnalnd one? Obviously we have been to Surfers Paradise and not been south of Coolonggata airport. It's amazing just how daunting it can be to pick a place to live, when you have nothing actually pulling you to a particular city / place! Whetever it is, we need to visit some schools in both places. Any suggestions for good schools? thanks.

Hi guys, We need to move to Perth and we need to find another tenant for our apartment in Southport as the landlord has no intention to help us ending the tenancy earlier. Anyway, the house is a nice 2 bedrooms-2bathrooms-2indoor parking spaces in Southport, on the Gold Coast. It is a very very quiet complex with bbq and pool. The house is extra clean - thing that can't be usually said for all rental houses. It's walking distance from Tafe and all the schools in Southport, as well as close to the parks, which is nice. It is also close to the train station and the M1 motorway to brisbane. This house would be good also for people looking for short term rentals since the contract ends in january. However it is possible to extend it if you want. If you are in perth, or wa in general, and need to move to the gold coast but you have our same problem we can discuss about switching the contracts, and have a win-win situation.. And now let's cross the fingers...

A friend suggested having a look at rentals in Ashmore and when checking out realestate.com.au I noticed that you seem to be getting more value for money. We are hoping to move early next year and would love to settle in the Robina area, ie we are just in the early stages of our research yet. Any opinions on Ashmore? Is it cheaper because it's not so nice? We're a family of five with two school aged children. Thank you! Mel

Anyone already living out here & commuting to the CBD??? - rentals look pretty cheap, but assuming that's cos the PT links are crap? Brand spanking new 3-4 bed houses for $300+ - but since other half is gonna be commuting to the Valley - seems like we might have to give it a miss thanks to the 1-1hr 40 commute - unless there is anyone who can convince us this could be an ok move? Cheers Andy & Michelle

Hi there, I'd like any advice about peoples experience of Brisbane State Primary Schools. I am really concerned that in general queensland schools have extremely poor grades compared to interstate schools, and qld is generally considered one of the worst states educationally. This may be partly to do with the children starting school somewhat older than in the other states. In any case, I am wondering if we need to look at private schooling throughout to ensure our kids have a good education. (I went to state schools for my entire education prior to uni in nz so this seems unusual to me). Everybody we know in australia though has elected to do this. I was there recently looking at a (private) school and the young 9 year old who was showing me around told me her parents had moved her out of her state school because they were only "singing" their times tables in Grade 4 (I think that was the Grade). The school she was attending in considered a "really good state school" in a good area. My question is, do the private primary schools teach more advanced curriculum, more in line with other states etc? It seems like a lot of money but we can do it if that is what is required for a good education. I definitely dont want them to fall behind and have a poor education. (Also - is IB only for high schools? I dont know much about that) Thanks for any help in advance.
