My o/h is the practical one in our household as I am very much led by my heart and if something feels right then ill go with it, where as Mark is soooo practical and if if all the i's are not dotted and t's crossed then it is too risky! This as you can imagine has caused many arguments where the move to Australia is concerned! Please tell me we are not the only ones!!!!

So if there are any other newbies like us two who would like any advice about this early stage then feel free to drop us a line. Ditched global visas as well as we just cant afford it and surely it cant be hard to do it yourself ??(famous last words) And to everyone who is in the middle of the **** storm. Dont give up chaps. Practical Day - Refrigeration

My husband is in London doing his practical today. I know there are some people doing theirs tomorrow and the day after so here is the little bit of news (will be updated as I hear it) on what to expect I booked him into the Travel Lodge down the road due to it's closeness to the college. It took him about 10/15 minutes to get there this morning - even in peak hour traffic. Parking - security parking is available at the college. It is boom controlled and there is loads and free - although it is quite a walk to reception with your tool bags (parking in lecturers parking bays is still not allowed - even at half term ) Apparently the car park was busy this morning with a wide variety of Tradesmen all looking fairly nervous so ............... Now the phone is off (apparently they are really strict on that point) so hopefully he will phone at lunchtime and I'll give you more substantial information
  4. Hi My o/h took his practical a week ago in Preston. We have checked online, and nothing so far. Anyone in the same boat? Probably being impatient...maybe next week?

  6. HI ALL, ITS NICK HERE, ON THE 25 MAY I WILL BE DOING THE GENERAL PLUMBER PRACTICAL AT ACCRINGTON FOR THE VETASSESS. I JUST WANT TO SAY GOOD LUCK TO ALL WHO ARE GOING THERE THAT DAY OR WEEK AND JUST REMEMBER WHY YOU ARE THERE AND WHAT FOR. THE END DREAM IS WORTH IT, ALSO SO IS THE THOUGHT OF A COLD ONE OR MORE AT THE END OF THE DAY. PASS OR FAIL WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT THEY THOUGHT ABOUT GOING TO OZ, YOU CAN TURN ROUND AND KNOW OR SAY THAT YOU TRIED AND WENT FOR IT INSTEAD OF JUST TALKING ABOUT IT. GOOD LUCK THE DAY AND SEE YOU IN THE PUB AFTERWARDS. NICK THE PLUMBER FROM A LONG WAY AWAY.:cute:

    vetassess practical advice

Hi, I have got my practical assessment for motor mechanic this coming Monday and am very nervous, I was wondering if anyone has done this lately and could advise me whats involved, I have mainly worked on older cars and my electrical and diagnostic knowledge is out of date, does anyone that has done the assessment think this will be an issue? Kind regards, damo.
  19. Hi there guys, I've just completed my Vetassess electrician's practical assessment, and I thought it would be nice to pass on my experience of the day, and offer a bit of advice. Firstly, there are things in the assessment which some people just don't do on a regular basis. Myself, for example! I'm as qualified as anyone else, but I'm sure there are plenty of us out there who don't have lots of experience in certain areas. My main areas of concern were the conduit and the control circuit for the direct online starter. I found out there is some PVC conduit work to be done and this worried me a little, so I went out and bought some conduit, a bending spring and then practised in my garage. It's not that I couldn't do it; it was just something I don't do in my job......I work on oil rigs so the cable containment we use is tray/unistrut/ladder rack etc. Anyway, the practise that I did paid off because it went absolutely fine. In my assessment I had to do 2 seperate pieces of conduit. A 90 degree bend from the DB to a back box for a socket outlet (with a couple of saddles in for support obviously). The other was a double set from light switch to light switch for the 2 way lighting circuit. With regards to the motor control circuit, I was REALLY worried about that, as it's just something I do not do, and have never touched since college. All I'll say is that you do get a wiring diagram of what's expected of you, and it's not too hard to follow. In my assessment, I had to put links in the circuit from point to point and complete the circuit as per the diagram. I've done a drawing on the computer of the layout of the control circuit for anyone who is as worried as I was about it. Please email me for the layout drawing and I'll send it to you no probs. Email address at the end. Other bits of the assessment included a safe isolation/disconnection/reconnection/recommissioning of a heater element. Just make sure you read the candidate's guide in the Vetassess handout for the way they want you to do it. We all know how to isolate etc but the way I saw it was if that's what it says in the handout........that's the way I'll do it. Just take your time and you'll be fine. My assessor wanted to know the current I would have expected to run in the circuit. There was a sticker detailing the voltage and the power, so it was all the Ohm's law type calculations for that. Theory Test. Make sure you revise on Ohm's Law, RMS calculations, Transformer calculations, Power factor, Resistors in series/parallel, single and 3 phase power calculations, impedance/inductive reactance calculations. Again, it's all in the Vetassess handout what you need to brush up on. Just make sure you do because it's all in there. Anyway, if you would like me to email the motor control circuit diagram, or have any other questions my email address is stephen.derby@ntlworld.com I hope this helps a bit and good luck all!

  25. I've got a 5 1/2 hour train journey from the south coast to lancashire for my practical assessment for general electrician. I'm going to have to stay up there for two nights so I dont want to be taking loads of kit. Can anyone recommend to me what tools I should take? I dont want to lug all my tools around on the train.
