  1. Me and hubby are just at the info gathering and saving stage of our move but are getting confused with there being so much choice of where to go! We def want to be on the east coast as we understand that there is a good chance of a job (carpenter/joiner) in these areas, but the big question is where exactly! Its not just choosing an area its choosing a 'village'. We looked at the Gold Coast and further up the coast line but there is just so much choice... We are coming with our son who will be 11 at the time and a rotty and will be living for a while on just 1 wage so need somewhere to rent thats affordable, not a lot to ask I know :arghh: Any info would be greatly appreciated and anyone who convinces us to move to their area will be first people invited over for drinks!!!! Donna x
  2. Just got back from France, playing golf . As a proud pom,i hate to say this, but their lifestyle leaves both the UK, Oz and the US standing. Cleaner, more culture, style, civic pride, better roads........the whole shooting match. The sods have got it right. We stayed in le touquet in Northern France, only 25 mins off the Eurotunnel..........very impressed......expensive,but very impressed. Everyone seems to take pride in their appearance, and everything revolves around the family.......it really is a different world.
  3. Finally we have our visas in our pockets and we are looking to move to Melbourne (or close to it). We are looking for a cheap place to stay for the first few weeks. Maybe someone know someone who would be willing to rent out a room, annex or cheap apartment? We are both young professionals and are planning to go to Oz in September (booking tickets in next few days). Please send me PM, if you have any options.:notworthy:

    Place in Melbourne

Hi all, Just got our visa and the next level of stress comes in. We are looking to move to Melbourne by the 15th of October perhaps sooner. We have been to Sydney, Queensland but never to Melbourne. We are certainly hoping to get an idea where is the best place to live in Melbourne, looking to rent a house (at least 3 BR) for maybe 3-6 months at the most. I worked in the automotive industry and my OH worked as a Research Associate/ Biotechnology. We have 3 children ages 18,16 and 15 and they're all going to school. Any recommendations, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, JP
  5. Australia scored third place, but other major Western nations did poorly, with Britain coming in at 74th place and the United States at 114th. Costa Rica is the happiest place on Earth, and one of the most environmentally friendly, according to a new survey by a British non-governmental group, which puts Australia in third place. I knew it was'nt only me that felt this way AUSTRALIA what a great place to live, especially QUEENSLAND..................... Dont give up hope with your visa applications its all worth it in the end ....................
  6. Hi All, just attempted to email the following to ANMC for the OH but their email link doesn't seem to work, could anyone tell me what sort of answer I could have expected...............thanks Gary Dear sir/madam, Could you please clarify my position. Over the past few months I have been collating all the necessary documents required for a Full migration assessment, I am waiting for one reference. I have visited your website on numerous occasions regarding the English language proficiency. The web page, prior to today when I checked again, stated that there was a waiver for UK trained registered nurses of the IELTS exam. I was aware that the exam was to be taken from the 1st July for all internationally trained nurses but was not aware that the waiver was to be lifted also. Your website never stated that the waiver would be lifted either ! My visa application must be received prior to my 35th birthday, which is on the 6th October to qualify for a 175 GSM visa. If I now must sit the exam, the earliest being the 8th August at Liverpool university UK, I must then wait for the result, from then I will be able to send my completed migration assessment. Is it likely that the application will be processed in time? or is the waiver for UK registered/trained nurses still applicable?

    Do you know this place??

hi We have just got our visas and are trying to choose an area to come and visit and hopefully decide to live this year. Initally a 3 week holiday to activate our visas. Paul is a Brickie so we need to be somewhere within easy travel to building works. We have no children - but 2 dogs, so schools and family friendly etc not an issue. But nice safe places to walk with the dogs would be great. We would both like to be living near the coast, (we live on the North Wales Coast now) - Paul does 'diving' and would like to join a scuba diving club - I like horse riding - so it would be nice to be able to do that. We dont want to be in the centre of a city but close enough to enjoy nights out without having to travel for ever to get there. We have thought of Geelong - Bellarine area - does this sound like any where you know? Many thanks for any advice/suggestions... Sarah & Paul
  8. Hi We arrived in Oz just over a month ago and slowly made our way up from sydney to the whitsundays. We've stopped here for the moment because it's just so beautiful! We are considering settling here permanently (either in Cannonvale or Jubilee Pocket) and would like to know if any other PIOs have made this area their home. If so, how long have you lived here and are you happy here? :v_SPIN:
  9. Hi there, As in an earlier thread i explained we are going over to the sunshine coast on a student visa, the college is in Nambour but this area isn't really what we were looking for anyway we have almost decided on living in Maroochydore but am wondering about the job prospects we would only be able to afford 1 car for around the first 6 mths so only 1 of us can have the use of it as in getting to college or work i can only work 20 hrs a week due to visa rules and would be looking for something in the finance/admin sector so need to know what's the best area for us, we have a teenage son so has to be quite outdoorsy, we definately want to be near the beach and close to a high school and shops, bars, etc and where rentals aren't outrageously expensive (don't want much do i lol) but obviously the job prospects for myself will haved to be the deciding factor so my question is whether Maroochydore is the place or has anyone got anymore recommendations for us :err:

    Best place to start

Apologies if this issue has already been raised before but basically we are a family of four who want to move to Australia. We have looked into this quite a lot already but would like some feedback on here as to the best way forward. As we are starting right at the beginning, is it better to go through an agency or deal with the process yourself? Any links/advice would be much appreciated.
  11. Hi All, Where is the best place to live on the East Coast? We are looking at a big stretch from the Illawarra up as far as Coffs Harbour... For a long time we were very keen on CH and were pretty much decided that that was where were headed until a former work colleague of my Dad's who emigrated over to Oz in the 70s absolutely blasted the place! Now, this is only one man's view but it has made us wobble a bit. We need a bit of advice. Where else should we consider? We are classic 'sea changers'. We're looking for a location by the sea (OH is a keen sailor) with a good, but not too hot, climate where property prices are still fairly reasonable. We have three young children (12, 10 & 7) and are keen to have access to good schools. As for work, OH has been working in the City for the last 15 years and is keen to avoid the city working lifestyle so would not ideally want to work in either Sydney or Brisbane but thinks his IT skills should be transferable to a smaller town environment. I run my own interior design business and hope to continue this in Oz too and it would be helpful to be reasonably close to a big city for sourcing etc. Coffs appears to be a growing town which ticks many of these boxes (except being close to a big city, of course). However, this guy said it was a town with no real centre and no soul and he couldn't understand why anyone would want to live there!! It looks great from our internet searches and we've read many positive reports. We'd love to hear from anyone who can counter his negative views. However, we really feel we should research some other possibilities. Wollongong? Newcastle? Where else should we look and why? Thanks in advance for any suggestions....!
  12. Australia seen as best place to ride out downturn THE world has voted Australia as the best place to run a business during the economic downturn. This supports what local economists have been saying for some time, that the nation is well-placed to weather the global financial crisis. A survey of 7500 international business people from 24 nations identified Australia as the country that was surviving the economic downturn the best, with 20 per cent of respondents citing it as the clear leader http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/business/story/0,28124,25542981-36418,00.html

  22. Does anyone know of a website or organisation which can give help and advice about all the different aspects of moving back to the UK please? I have been out here for 11 years and am looking at all the issues that have to be considered for going back e.g. jobs, financial/benefits if I can't get work immediately, what happens to Australian superannuation if I go back, help with rentals (I have dogs that will be going back with me)? I would be going back alone (apart from the dogs, of course!)
  23. Hi, I have been on here once before, then changed my mind about going to Oz, and now after a long time thinking about it I have finally decided....wot the hell Im going to go! Now I just need to decide where to live, Im going to be working in Brunswick, so was thinking about finding a place in Fitzroy, Flemington or Carlton, Does anyone have any advice on these areas, or anywhere else I could look at????? I want a max travel time of 30-45 mins to work. Thanx  Also if there are anymore 20 somethings on here, would be great to hear your thoughts on Melbourne.
  24. I know im leaving it too late. Im arriving into Melbourne on 23rd Feb (457 visa) and at the moment I dont have anywhere to stay. (Me, 28, and my missus, 27) Thats not entirely true, someone has offered me some floor to crash on, but this is my last resort as would feel like im imposing on them. So, what options do I have? Ive been spending most my time on real.estate.com and domain applying for viewings but not been having much luck (got about 4 viewings in 1st week so far). Also, without getting off topic, does everyone know that Gumtree (Melbourne one) does not let you create ads or reply to ads from England - it looks like your replying, but in fact they do not get through. Anyhow, more importantly where should I stay. I saw "Moving2Melbourne" but the properties that were available were a bit pricey for my budget. Saying that, was not keen on staying in backpackers accommodation either. Was hoping to find some budget short term accommodation. (1-2 weeks tops, but would consider longer as well) Only need the basics, internet would be helpful but not essential. I would be willing to pay any existing Melbournites who might have a spare room for 1 week tops - could provide a bond, new employer details and previous UK references, bank statements. I think this is a long shot, but thought I might as well ask. Would really appreciate some advice - even a hostel thats clean and not too noisy would also be handy.
  25. Hi My family and I are hoping to move to oz next year and I am just wondering what city is going to provide me with a decent chance of finding work / starting a business. I currently work in blackpool, england. I am self-employed and provide technical support to home and small office users. I setup small networks, supply pc's, virus removal, wireless networks, that sort of thing. any comments would be appreciated. thanks Paul
