  1. Steve at Carignbah Motorcycles and Scooters is uregently seeking a qualified and experienced motorcycle mechanic. Ring or email attention Steve, tell him Kevin with the BMW told you to call him. Speak to Steve only, in the workshop section. Good luck to anyone that applies. Cheers: Kevin.
  2. My girlfriend spoke to a migration consultant today and she was told that trades people struggle to get skilled migration visas. I am a lift mechanic and have worked in the lift industry for 10 years but have only been qualified for 1 year. I am qualified at NVQ level 3 but he said that I would have had to have done an apprenticeship as the dept of immigration only recognise this. Im not entirely sure he is correct in what he has told me. I did think I might struggle getting the skilled visa as I only have one years qualified experience but I have heard that if you have been in the trade for a while, there is something called a TRA. By the way he came across, even if I had 5 years experience I would not stand a chance because of my NVQ route. PLEASE HELP!

  10. My husband and I are moving out to Oz for a year and although I hold an Oz passport, his is UK. We're obviously going to look for jobs before we go so he can go on a sponsored 457 as it's cheaper than a spouse visa if we're only going for a year, but if he hasn't got this by the time we go, we'll just go and he'll apply for a working holiday visa instead. I guess for the 457 he'd be asked to do the TRA thing anyway, but is there any point in him doing this anyway just to have a recognised skill once we get there? It would look so much better for him if he did but I'm not sure if it's appropriate to do. From the thread title, you've probably guessed he's a motor mechanic, C&G qualified, with over 10 years post-apprenticeship experience. I guess the question is whether he will find it easy getting a job out there with a UK qualification.... anyone else experienced this?

    Auto Mechanic from USA

Hi Everyone. My husband and I are currently researching the process to immigrate to Oz from the USA. There is not much info out there on Americans immigrating to Oz. He is a motor mechanic and on the SOL list. We are having some trouble finding out what is required to pass the assessment test for a AQF certificate III. It seems to apply to be assessed that you need to have some type of trades degree or certificate or apprenticship. In the USA mechanics are not required to go to school. Most of it is on the job training and they consider 1/2 year of working equivalent to 1 year of school. There is something here called ASE - where mechanics get tested in a specific area (brakes, AC, etc..) and are awarded a certificate. My husband has 3 out of 7 of those. He has been a mechanic for 6 years and can do about anything with a motor. We were wondering if anyone has advice on the assessment process. We did briefly talk with a solicitor in Australia and he recommended that my husband get privately assessed before we apply to TRA. The only problem is he is estimating that to cost between $2000 - $5000. That is a lot of money to be assessed. Has anyone ever paid to be privately assessed and does it make a difference? Thanks in advance for any comments.

  15. My family and i are leaving for perth in 3 weeks once your container has left you are commited to the move we are all aware off the recession and i certainly do not own any rose coloured glasses. as a family of 5 we know it will be tough but i am hoping whilst being self employed for 20 years we have already had a taste of the highs and lows of life. we are taking a modest amount of money to overcome time to find employment. i would like to hear from any other diesel fitters whom are in the process of emigrating and / or who have moved to WA recently. i have always found that when the uk goes into recession our trade seems to get an uplift in work as many companies looking to cut transport costs move around the service / repair sector, which if you can offer an attractive package you secure the contract. it would be good to hear of any repair operatives in wa for there opinion finally if any one can help with information whether mechanics in wa can immediately go self employed with or without any wa licences apart from an accountant many thanks ian and paula
