  1. We'd like to ship a bedframe from the UK to Aus - the UK supplier is unable to export it themselves but happy to transport it to a suitable UK port etc. I'm struggling to find a company who will quote on this as it's not commercial and/or a container load. We can wait for it to be shipped - we don't want the high expense of air freight. Total weight of the 3 packages is approx 180kg. Any suggestions on who could help? Thank you!
  2. We'll be packing up to leave soon and I notice that for shipping personal effects you have to declare to AQIS all items less than 12 months old. How detailed or thourough do you have to be regarding this declaration? Is it best to declare a few token items or can we just say nothing is new? Do we really have to check every single thing that might be less than 12 months old? Will we be charged duty/GST on everything we declare? We have kids, so there are definitely toys and the odd bits and pieces that are less than 12 months old. It's not as if we've bought a load of new stuff intentionally to ship out to either avoid Australian tax or pay a cheaper price! I'm thinking of things like toys the kids received for birthdays in the past year - so I might not even know the price of the items. Any advice/tips appreciated. Thanks.

  4. Hi, I'm trying to find an insurance company that would cover our high value personal items that we will be carrying with us when we move from the UK to Australia. I've talked to the leading insurance companies, but coming up blank. I'd appreciate any guidance on what companies offer this. Thanks, Richard
  5. I Have heard people mention that you arent allowed to take any furniture (etc) that is under a year old? Is this true?

  8. Well as many of you will now know we have arrived and have started to make our new life here in South Australia and loving every minute of it. We have been advised of the date our items arrived in country but dont know how long it will take to clear. I appreciate every consignment is different and times will vary. but roughly how long has it taken your stuff to get through?
  9. Hi Maybe you could help us? We seem to have so much conflicting advice re wooden items...Lots of the things I'm talking about are inexpensive things that we have collected and we would consider shipping in our excess baggage as keepsakes. So is it really ok to take any of the following: Wooden stationery items Children's wooden toys Signs (i.e. decorative room signs) Picture frames Wooden trinkets etc that are shop-bought but made simply to look antique Wooden jewellery Then we have a few large photo canvases. These have been hand-made with the canvas stretched over a wooden frame (manufactured by a separate UK company) - the wood looks bare, but has been through processes to ensure strength and kiln dried, which should kill off anything... Any advice would be really welcome - thanks a lot!
  10. Hello all, after having read a good few posts along the general lines of "everything is more expensive in Oz", seeing the reactions of the poor folk (including me!) who are about to move here or just got here, I would like to inject some optimism into the forum and report on my day's activities purchasing household items.... I do lead an exciting life.... Pegs - $2 either from dollar store or Kmart (sorry to start with pegs, I was told to buy out Asda as they cost upwards from $10...) A box of crockery, 18 pieces $16 from Target - seen similar for $19 in Kmart Set of cutlery in a tray, with good cutting knives £10 Kmart Plastic chopping boards $4 Kmart Towels (large) good quality $5 each Target Wine glasses $1!!! reduced section in Ikea A box of 6 tumblers $3 Target Set of 3 large kitchen knives + scissors $19 Target Plenty of duvet sets, sheets etc starting from $9 Large mugs $2 dollar store Huge pan with glass lid $18 dollar store Set of 3 saucepans with lids $12 Kmart Great ceramic colander $10 Target Kettle $9 Kmart or $12 in Target I won't go on. The message I am trying to put across is that if you look around everything isn't double, triple, 4x what you pay in the UK and if you need basics for those first few days before your container arrives then you should be OK. The shopping centres here are very large, I should know as I used to work in the Trafford Centre, and they are bigger. There are plenty of shops on offer and you will find the price you are looking for. Of course Sydney does seem quite expensive in the CBD, but it is a large city and London is just the same..... but you don't have to eat out in the heart of Sydney every night!!! We had a pizza in the Little Italy called Leichhardt the other night and it was only $15. Hope this has been useful. All the best Naomi xxx
  11. I have been granted the 176 Visa ( Family Sponsored) on 12-Jul. I have not posted much but have been an avid reader these last couple of years. So wanted to summarise my experience before I move on. First thanks to PIO for having been a mine of info and for all you wonderfull ppl who post on this forum. THere have been times when the info here is more reliable and accurate than my agents. Kudos to you all. My timeline - Applied for 176 in Nov-2009. CO assigned Mar 2011 (I think though I did not get a formal notification). Meds submitted Feb 28 2011, PCC submitted in stages, last one in May 2011. My kids Meds got lost and I had to redo them again in Jul 2011. VIsa finally granted Aug 2011. It has been a harrowing time these last 2 years, what with all the documentation, a so so agent. The waiting was starting to tell on my professional and personal life (sorry to say). But finally I forced myself to ignore the visa application and distract myself with the more mundane task of living my life (easier said than done). And then finally there it was one fine day. The loop is now closed. The first landing date is fixed before Mar-21 2012. This was fixed based on the first of the PCCs that I submitted. So now I have to wind up stuff in India and plan ahead for our new life. Have applied for affixing the label today. I had question here though - agent says that the first landing should in the following order - Primary Applicant lands first and Sec app could follow. Or all the applicants can travel together but the Secondary appl should not land without the PA having landed first (Is this correct?) I have now started to apply for jobs from India. No bites yet. Is this possible (I mean can I find a job before I land? How easy or difficult is it?). I have been suggested that I land first (I am the PA) and find a job as it is easier that way. Any thoughts? My line of business is Proj Mgmt in IT. Would be happy to hear your views. Sincere prayers to all out there who are waiting. Please hang in there....Good luck.

  14. I sent my skills assessment details to Engineers Australia by Royal Mail Air Sure on Saturday last week. For the last 5 days the Royal Mail website simply says "Passed to our overseas partner in Australia for delivery" How long do things normally take to get there? Its just a rigid envelop (the Do Not Bend type), slightly bigger than A4.
  15. I'm now debating whether or not to simply ship some boxes (rather than getting part of a container) out and leave my tele behind. If i buy new things (bed linen, pc equipment, games, books etc) and ship them out ebfore i leave will customs charge me? I'm not really up to speed with the do's and don'ts of shipping and the condition things have to be in etc....

Posting Items from UK to Aus

Hi all Just wondered if anyone could help me out with this.... my hubby and I LOVE Sports Direct clothes and they are an awesome bargain....but.....their postage to Australia is approximately 55 pounds, and the postage through Royal Mail (if I were to get it shipped to a UK relative and they would send to me) would be about the same... Anyone know how we can ship it for any cheaper or is it just not possible?! The postage makes it not really worth it in the end, but if we can get it shipped for cheaper I'm all ears!

  18. Hi all due to move out to Melbourne in just over 5 weeks and need to ship a few small items like our george hoover and few pots pans glasses and some clothes so only need about 3 boxes, can you please recommend a cheap reliable shipper to use. Many thanks
  19. Hi we have some new items that we will be putting into our container for shipping. Can they tax you on new things as they see them as being imports. For instance we have a brand new still boxed gas bbq.If we leave it boxed it shows to them its never been used so isnt a risk, but if they would tax us on it for it being new we could take it out of its packaging. Then you might have it rejected as they think its been used. I thought i had read a thread telling people to remove packaging on new items. Thanks Paul.
  20. We have a few small furniture items we would like to put in with someone else's furniture and and contribute to their costs. A nest of small coffee tables a lamp base and a bowl really. They are items from my late fathers house that I would like to have shipped over here to Perth. :notworthy: Has anybody got any clues?
  21. i am trying, without much luck to get excess baggage with malaysia airlines, so needing a back up plan. Has anyone flown out a couple of boxes, or suitcases of clothes before. If so who did you use and roughly how much did it cost?
  22. Hi all. Just a question, you know those capsules that people bury for future generations to dig up, say in a hundred years time, well, what would you put in it, five items only if possible. Maybe very personal things, or things that may tell future generations about our lives at the present time. I'll have a crack first. 1. A wad of money, with a tag on it saying, 'Did Me No Good'. 2. A 'celebrity' magazine, to show how fecking shallow we had become. 3. A 'Help For Heroes' emblem, to show that we still cared. 4. A picture of my family. 5. And finally, the book, 'Animal Farm'. I know mine are a bit serious, but go for your lives, funny, sad, etc. Cheers Tony.
