    Mater hospital...

Hi all! Any midwives who work at a hospital in Australia, particularly for the Mater Mothers hospital Brisbane or people that know such midwives... What shifts/hours do you work? Are shifts 12 hours like they can be in the U.K. or are they different at the Mater hospital??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated... WARDStoOZ
  3. Having just spent 5 days in a Perth hospital I would just like to say how wonderful it was!!!!… a bit strange I know as to why anyone would say how wonderful it was to stay in a hospital … but I can honestly say I am absolutely amazed by the difference of care offered here compared to the uk. Now without going into much detail I have been feeling unwell for approximately 5 years - following my youngest appearance into this world… and as is so typical of the uk now a days as I refused the diagnosis of the gp as to being over anxious after the birth and therefore refusing to take the antidepressants he so hastily tried to ram down my neck, I was considered a trouble maker and no further real care was offered. After years of ‘not feeling any better’ he did eventually think that maybe I did have a problem and considered starting me on HRT.. By this time I had managed to pass my medical and we had our visa to Australia and were off so that was never an option. When we arrived here back in March my symptoms continued until September when I felt worse than ever only to find my blood pressure was now dangerously high as opposed to ‘on a little bit on the high side’… and within weeks of presenting myself at the local gps I was diagnosed with an adrenal tumour which needed removing. Last Thursday I was admitted to the private hospital in Perth where I underwent surgery to remove my troublesome problem…. We joined ‘medibank private’ back in May this year and although they did query whether it was a pre existing condition (12 month claim ban if it was)… they eventually on the day of surgery agreed to cover the costs…. As my consultant talked to them stating I had never been diagnosed before. I spent a night/half day in intensive care with arterial lines and cardiac lines and all such other types protruding out of me then I was transferred on to a ‘normal ward’ in my own room. Having been a senior registered nurse for many years working in both the NHS and private sector.. I can honestly say I have not experienced anything like it. My bed was fully movable by a remote switch which worked, I had my own TV and bathroom with shower and complementary shampoo. The meals were of good choice and excellent … my room was constantly being hovered and cleaned with fresh towels twice a day. I even had a ‘flower lady’ come round and cut dead heads off my flowers and spray my orchids which I had been given whilst I was there. The nursing staff were very attentive… I had a ‘heart episode’ and I had several ECG’s done there and then rather than wait hours later and I even had an echo done on the same day and results were available virtually straight away without anyone having to ‘chase them up’ days later. Having spoken to staff I can only assume from what they have said that the equivalent NHS hospital here would not have been that much different (except from the private ward)… although I am sure someone will provide a horror story to knock that theory… but compared to the uk I really can’t see how we can compare really! I am at home now after spending 5 days there.. A little sore… but on the mend… and I can’t help wonder how long it would have taken to have been eventually diagnosed and treated if I were still in the UK and to what level of care I would have had. I suppose some may wonder why I even bothered to post this thread… but I think it is important to know what to expect and in my experience I can only sing the health service praises here and for those of you who have negative thoughts about Australia I can honestly say this has to be the biggest positive one for me. min x:wubclub:

    Hospital costs

Does anyone know how much it costs for routine checks at the hospital. My son has a disability and needs 6 - 12 monthly checks. He's not ill and doesn't need medication. Any information on this and anything related would be great.
  7. We found out last night that Geoffrey's had an accident at work, and at the moment in hospital 90 miles away from home. He had an operation on his knee yesterday. So I would like to wish you a speedy recovery Geoffrey, it's very quiet here without you, and you must be making the nurses lives hell............ See you soon.......... KP Nuts (Kim)
