  1. my wife and i are hoping to move to oz in the next few months. My wife is already an aussie citizen. We married 2 years ago and have been together 5 years. After a run of bad luck and difficulty in my wife obtaining a job as a teacher, weve had enough! Had enough of the crap weather, enough of being cold, enough of being treated like crap, enough of the bad manners. Were thinking of aplying for bankruptcy before we go as we dont want to move to oz with debts. My wife is an australian citizen but i have to obtain an migration visa. will going bankrupt effect the process? Will we be able to get a mortage if we declare bankruptcy in the uk?If not how long will we have to wait or will we never get one? Do we have to declare that weve gone bankrupt in the uk? Does anyone know of any companies that can help with this or even act on our behalf while we move and start our new life? Can we move to oz while the bancruptcy is being processed or do we have to wait until the end? i know there are no travel restrictions during bankruptcy. We have a contact address to leave in oz as my wifes parents live there. Many thanks for any help provided. my appologies if this is in the wrong section, its my first time!!
  2. Hi - I have just found PomsinOz and am very pleased to have found others looking to move or having already moved to Oz. What an achievement! I don't think most people realise how difficult it can be... Cheers LondonGirl
  3. Hi Everyone, This is our first post and literally our first visit on the forum and we are very much in need of some help, hope you are able to assist. Here is our situation in brief and our plans... Our situation... My wife is a serving Police Officer in the UK. We recently applied to Western Australia Police Force as they were recruiting current serving UK officers. My wife was successful and we received a formal job offer which we accepted. Unfortunately WAPOL have now withdrawn the job offer before we moved to WA due to becoming overstaffed. We are now looking into an alternative route to gain permanent residency in Aus, preferably WA, but we will consider other states. A little bit about us... We are a family of 3. Myself: 36 years old with previous experience in Sales and currently working as a successful self employed Personal Trainer for the last 6 years. My wife, 38 years old, a Detective Constable in the UK for the last 10 years. Our baby son who is just 8 months old. We have significant savings for the move and to help us get set up however we ideally prefer to use these savings for a future house deposit when we obtain perm res. Our proposed plan... As it stands we do not have careers that enable us to apply via the Skilled Workers route. Our current careers are not on the list so our points are low. So, instead - after speaking with a migration consultancy here in the UK - we were made aware of the option to apply for a student visa to study in Aus for 2 years with a view to staying upto 3.5 years by completing a post grad qual too. They advised us that whilst in Aus we should simply explore sponsorship from an employer - ideally in the field in which I will be studying - to obtain permanent residency. Sounds like a simple enough plan to me. We are now just beginning to research whether this is a viable, affordable and logistically possible route for us to obtain perm res. How you may be able to help us... We need help! Here come the questions! We would appreciate any info you can provide on this or any experiences you can share, thanks in advance! Have you been down this type of route? Did it work? We hear the student visa route has changed recently, how will this affect our application? How easy/common is it to obtain sponsorship from an employer? Which trades are in most demand and will remain in demand for the foreseeable future? How long do you have to work for an employer whilst going through the sponsorship process. Are we eligible for any type of assistance or funding? We heard that we would have to pay for literally everything from tuition fees to medical fees etc etc. Can we easily go from a 2 year qual to post grad for a further 1.5 years. That is all we can think of at the moment and we very much hope that if you have already explored this route then you would be able to share your experiences with us in order to help us get a better picture on what we may expect. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this as we appreciate that there are lots of threads on this forum. Please feel free to direct us to any threads that we may have missed that are relevant to this post. Kind regards Mark & Lynn.
  4. Hi everyone... I'm hoping to ship my Jaguar XK8 over to Oz and having read a few of the threads I did get the impression that the car needs to have been driven in the UK for th 12 months preceding the shipping. I have owned the vehilce for 5 years but for the past 18 months she has been been tucked up in my garage as I just haven't had the time to drive her. Does anyone know what the situation is? Can my car be left on a SORN decleration until shipping or do I need to get her MOT'd, taxed and insured for the 12 months beforehand?? Also, has anyone shipped a car over using a 40ft container into which they have also packed their personal belongings. This is an option we are considering. Thanks in advance. Spencer

Hoping to move to Perth ....!

Hi everyone! I have just found this website so thought I would write a message to see if there were many people out there to talk to who have either moved to Perth from the UK or are thinking of doing it. I'm Gemma and am married to Alex. We have 2 children, Joshua who is coming up to 3 and Chloe who is coming up to 6 months. We have talked about moving to Australia for a long time and have finally decided to give it a go. We are hoping to apply for a visa in a few months time. Would be great if anyone could write with any help or advice and would be good to meet up with people from the UK when we get there too. Gemma x
  6. Hi all, Just a little about our plans to move to Brisbane next year. My Dad was born in Australia and I've got my citizenship by descent. My wife Pam (user on here PamD) has visa application in sponsored by me. Our 2 wonderful children Becki (14) and Luke (11) are really excited at the thought of our new life. They have their medicals on Monday and things are progressing well. We're going for an holiday to sort loads out at Easter next year. We'll be staying with my brother and his family who live there already. Really excited by it all I've been reading loads on here and it's helped us loads but also scares you when reading some of the negative comments and what some have gone through. But I guess what some don't like some will find it to be great so that's our attitude. We'll take it as we find it and get over any obstacles we come across. I hope so anyways H
  7. Hi, Me and my husband are hoping to start the visa process afer talking about moving to Oz for the past 3yrs or so. The only thing is we are not certain about how my skills will be assessed if at all! We have been in contact with Go Matilda, who have been very helpfull, the trouble is I am a Electrical Design Engineer and have been for the last 3 yrs or so but I do not hold any relevent qualifications. As i began the role as a trainee I have been trained from within the company. I am hoping to be assessed under Electrical Engineering Associate and gain state sponsership from NSW as that occupation is on their state list. Has anybody else experienced similar problems/or been assessed by Engineers Australia? Please reply!! Natalie:spinny:

We have 2 kids - aged 6 at 4 - and just wondered how anyone else found the transition. We are just starting the process and wondered particularly how easy it was to sort things out like accommodation/schools etc? Any advice appreciated! Many thanks!:v_SPIN:
  10. New on here and my partner and I (with our wee girl) are seriously thinking of moving to Melbourne in 18 months to two years. We'd welcome any advice or shared experiences which may help. No point going to the school of hard knocks when the school of experience has a higher pass rate eh! Thanks to anyone who thinks they could be of help.

  12. Hello all, Im hopin that some of you can give us some advice on a 'hypothetical' situation!? The situation is this... I have a friend that is desperate to move to Oz with his wife to be and new born son. They qualify with flying colours to get the visa required to emigrate as he is an electrician and his fiance has a sister with two children and they are all Ozzy citizens. They have a property that after the credit crunch is worth 90 - 95k however the mortgage is 120k. They have 25k in the bank. After exhausting all angles of how to use the money to change their lives and emigrate they have hit a brick wall. They see the 25k they have saved as their 'new start' money for Oz. The only option they feel they are left with is to get the visa's in place, book the flights and head to Oz.....posting the keys to their property back to the mortgage company on the way to the airport!!! The questions they have are these.... - What are the consequences of doing this? - Would it effect their new life in Oz? - Can it be done? - Would it effect coming back into the country in the future? Obviously he realises that this isn the perfect scenario and he would jump at the chance to do the move more 'above board' so to speak so if any1 has any ideas they would be welcomed, but i do know that he has looked at every option he can think of! Any advice/help/contacts would be greatly appreciated as i know my friend is desperate to make the move! Many thanks
  13. Hi everyone! we are new to the site..not sure how it all works yet! I am Lisa, hubby is Mick. Have two kids 4 and 5 years old. 14. Hi all, am finding this PIO really interesting and very useful! We (hubby, 5 year old and twin 15 month old girls) are just starting the process of trying to move to Adelaide and it feels so slow! Have only just submitted our pre-assessment form to an agency so we really are at the beginning but should have enough points to go. Agency say that it should take about 12 months so hopefully this time-ish next year I won't be looking out on a foot of snow!
  15. Hi everyone, my hubby is a leakage technician working in the water industry, Im a customer services assistant. My hubby is looking for a job in Australia. We would really love to move to Australia with our children. We have only just decided to go ahead with it although we have been thinking about it for a long time. My hubby is 29, Im 31. Our kids are 14, 13, 10 and 6. My hubby has filled in an online visa assessment. We are not sure where to start, we know it can take some time to sort out everything. Anyee advice would be gratefully received. We have been looking online at jobs, houses, schools etc to try to understand more what the processes are. If anyone can offer advice or help that would help a great deal. Thanks Rachel
  16. Hi Everyone,my family would love to make a permanent move to OZ, most likely Melbourne. We have australian friends there and my cousin and her family, also so it seems the most sensible place to try. I'm a qaulified gardener / Horticulturalist with 19 years experience, running my own business in Lincoln in the UK,is there a demand for this trade in OZ? I'm willing to retrain in any areas of the industry that are different to here.I'd be happy to work for a company or start my own business if this is possible. I'm a hard worker and not frightened to get my hands dirty. My wife works as a teaching assistant and is studying for an N.V.Q. We have three children ,all eager to come too. We enjoy socialising and think we could have a better life style down under. Look forward to talking to people on the forum, any advise would be most appreciated. Thankyou, Rich

    Newbie hoping for some advice

My OH and I would like to move to Australia with our two young children. My OH is a Joiner/Carpenter and I do the accounts for his business at present albeit it I have no formal qualifications. We are in the preliminary stages of doing this and would like to do a bit of research i.e. jobs situation, cost of living, schooling etc but not sure the best place to go to. I did look at the Australian Emigration site but felt it just told the basics and not too much else. Would be grateful for any help and advice that you guys can give me
  21. Hello everyone, I have only just found this site, and I am hoping it will guide me through the migration process. I have had contact with a agency who inform me I can apply for a independent skilled visa,I think its called a 175 visa ? as I am looking to stay once I have sorted all the paper work out. This company charge £1500 to do application for you, is it quicker this way ? and is all the paperwork such a nightmare is it worth paying an agency? I am unsure wether to go this route or plod on mathodically and do it myself. Any advice would be helpful thank you
  22. hi. husband a plaster. hoping to move family over this year. any advice from plasters already over there? how was it for you? what can u expect to earn? where best to go ? cheers !:mask:
  23. :unsure:Hey there!! well, this is my first thread so please bear with me.. (one of many, i`m sure!!) I`m a registered general nurse, and registered mental nurse, currently working in substance misuse. I`m planning to move to melbourne as soon as i can and am wondering the best way to get a job.... is it through an agency? if so, how do you choose... there seems such an alarming array!!! is it better to get a hospital to sponsor you, and if so, how do you go about it? should i sort out before i go or when i get there? how likely would it be to get a job in the addictions field via these routes? oh goodness.. thats a lot of questions... any help / advice would be very appreciated!!!
  24. I am a 40 year old primary school teacher and looking to migrate to australia. However I do not know where to start! Any advice welcome
  25. Hi, We are new members and have already submitted a Contrebutary parent application in Sept 07. My daughter, australian son in law and two grandchildren are living in Cairns. We have been on holiday and checked out the shcools, housing and jobs (not that we have found one yet) We have a second daughter 15yrs old and after much deliberation we decided to register her as an international student. We have applied for a contrebutary parent visa and we were advised that it would take about 6 months. ( but it is going to be much longer), Our 15 yr old daughter went out in September with my husband to start school and see how she could fit into the life in oz. They came back at the begining of Dec and My Daughter is due to fly out in a couple of weeks to start yr 10 at TAZ (new school) She has made new friends and loves the school. We are so anxious about letting her go on her own!!!!! If we put her back to her school here she would have to stay until she finishes her GCES, then it would be A levels and she may find it harder to move. Being with her sister is good but what if she needs us? It could be another 12 months before we get a visa!! What if we don't get a visa!! Then there are all the usual - Are we doing the right thing? We were already putting the house up for sale so that's on the market. Family and friends don't want us to go and it is difficult for them to be objective. It has been good to read how others are getting on and it would be great to hear other peoples views. Di
