  1. Hello PIO Just thought I'd start a wee thread to chat to some folk about how they view life in NSW (or any other part of Australia if you feel like it). We have our case worker now, our medicals are booked for July and after almost 3 years it's almost time to move. I have a job on a drillship, flying in and out of Sydney on a 28 on/28 off rota and I'm looking forward to my first 4 week break over there!! We are planning on staying in the Hills district, I have some family in that area, we have 2 kids (3 & 6). Looking forward to getting thing moving from over here, shipping, flights, etc. I'm not expecting it to be easy but my main worry was employment and that has been sorted out now. Now the important matter of "What time do I have to wake up to watch the Premier League?" Anyway, just chat back, small talk, big talk, whatever you want. Cheers Mark

    Sevens Hills District

Hi I have been looking at potential suburbs for a move planned for February 2011. I have found that Seven Hills seems to have a fantastic train line into central Sydney but properties appear larger/cheaper than areas such as Castle Hill/Baulkham Hills. Does anyone have any knowledge of (or live in) Seven Hills that you could share with me? Thanks Cara

  9. If are one of the numerous people who is emergrating to Australia and are looking to take their car with them, this post is for you. I can honestly say that there was very limted information when I was in the same situation before our move to Sydney in November last year. I am delighted to tell you that my beloved Volvo S60 is now sitting my secure garage in the Western Sunburbs of Sydney. It was very expensive and as I couldn't get a reasonable price for it in the UK, due to it being 18 onths old and Godon Brown introducing a scrappage scheme (devastating second hand values - effectively a negative equity situation!) There was also a sentimental element - so decided to take it with me. My Removal company told me that in the last year that they have seen a 50% rise in people importing their cars. So you maybe likely to go down this route. You will need to ensure that the car is in a good condition and as clean as possible but the Australian Customs will steam clean it whatever happens and it is expensive. You will need a Personal Import Licence via ACT and this takes sometime. DO NOT IMPORT your car unless you have this piece of paper. Your Removal Company should tell you this. We arrived in Oz in Dec 2009 but the container didn't arrive until February and we didn't see the contents until much later that month. See a separte post on this - not best pleased by our removal company - as car and contents sat in the UK for a month before even starting the shipping process. I found Australain rules and regulations very complicated and the RTA in NSW is a complete nightmare. Red tape in Oz is significantly worse than the UK - beware!! Whilst fighting the battle with the RTA I had an agency recommended to me. In short, they were superb and looked after all the paperwork, registration and minor modifications needed to the car (replacement mirror to drivers side and child restraints to rear seats> They were: Complete Car Care, Seven Hills NSW 2147 If you are importing to Sydney mero area or beyond - give them a call - Ask for Robert and I can honestly say that the service was excellent and he will provide the level of service you don't often find in Australia. He was helpful and courteous. All you need to do is sign a Power of Attourney and then he will do the rest, just pay the bill and collect the car. Although it was expensive it was certainly worth it. Good luck. One final thought - unless your car is precious to you - it would be worth offloading before getting to Oz. You can get good value for your Dollars over here (subject to a decent exchange rate!). The total cost to ship my car was about £6,000 - not worth it unless the car is of some value! Happy to answer any further queries you may have on the importing experience. Tracey Burgess (via Martin's log in!)
  10. Hi all, My family and I, which consists of a 3 year old, a 40 something dad and a 40 something mum, have moved to Sydney and are living in the Hills Area. 11. Hello all This is a plea for help/advice. I am considering moving to Melbourne and have a potential job offer in Hawthorn. I've had a look at houses and frankly I'm shocked at the prices. It seems that while our house prices in the UK have been falling steadily Melbourne's have been rocketing - compounded by the poor exchange rate. Then I discover that many people are paying £3K or more per year per child for education and I'm wondering if we can really have a better life out there with 3 children of secondary school age. So can an'yone rescue my dream? I reckon AUD$ 500K is our absolute upper limit and it seems we need to live further out if we are to get a decent house with a decent plot. Thats OK - I like the hills, rural feel and I could live with a commute up to (say) 40 minutes, BUT we must have a good school as our kids are doing well here in the UK. I definitely couldn't afford private. Is it possible?

    Hills District

I am a stay at home mum in my very early 30's (still think I'm 18 half the time). I have a 10 month old little boy and have another one on the way. I have met a few people at mothers groups etc but most have gone back to work now which leaves me a bit bored on some afternoons!!! Anyone living locally that fancies meeting up?
  13. Hi, I'm exploring my options ahead of starting work in Darling Harbour in a couple of weeks, and as well as the usual suspects (The Shire, North Shore etc), I like the look f the Hills (Castle Hill, W Pennant Hills etc). I see that there are express busses which look to take about an hour, just wondered if anyone had experience of the commute, i.e. how reliable, can you usually get a seat, cost etc? Many Thanks, Mike

    Ferny Hills house for sale

I thought I would post in case anyone is on the search for something in Northern Brisbane. It's a 3br,1.5bath high set timber and brick home with pool and two entertaining decks and large rumpus room which we have designed to be a 'grandparent's retreat' downstairs with walk in wardrobe (great for family visiting from uk!). It's in a great area (Ferny Hills) 15 mins drive from the city but only 7 min drive from Samford Village and just on the edge of lots of national parks and picturesque Mt Glorious. Very safe and quiet suburb with lots of schools, parks, shops, transport etc at close hand. This area of town has also been tipped as the next property hotspot in Brisbane in the next few years due to the proximity from the city and transport link upgrades so it's definitely a great investment. The property is on the market and is going to Auction on the 26th of June. Let me know if you are interested and I'll PM a link
  15. Hi I have lived in Austrailia for 7 years now. I am 31 and Married with one child (2 and a half). I have struggled to meet people since i have been here and from being a very social person in England i now feel like a hermit. I would like to meet up with some people from England just to try and get a social life again (for me and for the Baby). There is nothing worse than having nobody to watch the England games with, especially if we win it. I am in Endeavour Hills VIC. Cheers Gareth

  18. Hi, We're moving in the next couple of months to probably the Hills District...at this time thinking of trying to rent in Pennant Hills or close by. My daughter currently attends (P2) a local catholic school and I'm looking for some recommendations on schools in this area. We're intending to rent - around $500/$550 mark. So we also need to ensure that we can afford to rent in the area of the recommended school. We're not fixed on her going to a catholic school. Any thoughts/recommendations appreciated.

  24. Hi We are a family of four who arrived in Adelaide in January this year. We moved into an unfurnished 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 garage low maintenance detached modern property in Nairne in February. We have now bought our own property and so the rental property is being marketed as available from 12 October 2009 for $315/wk. It may be possible for a new tenant to take over our lease ie. only be tied in for the balance of about 3 months, otherwise it is a standard 12mth contract. It's no big deal if you need to break the contract (as we have) just a couple of hundred dollars re-advertising costs. Details of the property can be found at Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au Click the RENT tab and enter this property ID in the search box: 403089828 It's in a fantastic location with local amenities within walking distance eg. convenience store, post office, playground, nature reserve, school, hardware store, pharmacy, fish & chip shop, two cafes, pizzeria and an indian restaurant. Just 10 minutes away is Mt Barker with supermarkets, banks etc. Adelaide city is just 20 minutes down the freeway. Email me if you would like any further information. Best regards, Andrew
