  1. Hi there, I have already arrived in Australia and am settled. I have the complusory miniumum insurance required to get the 457 visa however, I am now looking to move to another insurance provider with better health cover. As this is specifically for overseas visitors, everywhere I look, to get more than the basic options you have to pay a small fortune. I am looking for something quite comprehensive. Iselect only come up with one option so they are no good as a comparison site. Can anyone recommend anything? Thanks, Sarah
  2. We are here on a 457 and I want to start proceedings for an independent PR visa asap. This is because of the timescales involved.... if we have to wait for OH's company to do it as sponsored we have to wait 2 years, but the timescale for PR can be anything from 8 to 15 months!! which would leave me not sleeping at night and deadline for going back getting nearer. My second reason for wanting PR is that as a 457 spouse visa holder I am being refused a lot of applications for jobs.... I think they think it is not worth taking on someone who is only temporary? As we have been informed that with myself as principal applicant we have a good chance of making PR, I would like to press on and get it lodged. Heard lots of nightmares of migration agents and so was looking for some solid advice and names of trustworthy companies I may approach in the Sydney area. Please PM me if you feel more comfortable. Many thanks Naomi xxx
  3. We are arriving In Sydney end of Sept and I have approx 2 weeks to find us a rental unfurnished property we can call home. We have decided we want to live Eastern Suburbs - at the moment we are thinking Bronte, Bondi, Clovelly, Waverley, Bellevue Hill, Randwick with Coogee being the most southern point. I have 2 questions - firstly I have heard most primary schools are pretty good in these areas but are there any I should avoid? Second question - We need to ensure our property is an easy commute to CBD on public transport (around 30 mins?) Are we on the right track with these areas or are we spreadingthe net too wide?
  4. Hi! We have been in Perth for 9 months now (already??!!) and are yet to find a really good curry house. The hubby is particularly gagging for a 'decent' Indian curry..... We've tried Chutney Mary's and Maya's, both of which have a great reputation, and both of which I thought were pretty good. Yet hubby is still bombarding me with 'not a patch on a curry in London....'. I've researched online and have the names of a few, but as fellow expats, I expect you're comparing the same quality as we would be. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated  Cheers Tina
  5. We have a 4 year-old, 2 year-old and a baby due in November. I read a lot of people saying that Oz is a better place than the UK to bring up kids, but I don't often see the concrete reasons for this. We're about to break the news to MIL that we're considering the move, and I'd like to be able to back up my gut feeling that Oz would be better for the kids. Can anyone give me anything concrete?? Also, I have a niggling worry about how much Ozzies like kids. People say they are kid-friendly but I am seeing a lot of phrases that kind of imply differently on real estate websites. You know the kind of thing.... mentions of a "parents' retreat" or talk of how areas of the house could be "adult-only zones", plus more subtle things like talk of how kids' bedrooms are positioned cleverly (ie. well way from everyone else!). I also remember from looking at houses with my folks when I was about 11 (they considered emigrating but never did) that there was a lot of talk about separate areas for children and parents. Kind of makes me worry that kids are viewed as something of a nuisance, but am I just reading too much into it?
  6. Hey, we arrive 19th Oct looking to rnet from around the 1st Nov- anyone selling up give me a PM.
  7. Hi can anyone help is an AAT in accountancy recognised in Australia. I have checked the relevant skills assessment website but it's not clear. Thanks
  8. I love my Pommie 'soccer' but, when your AFL/NRL team is on fire, it's really something. Listening to them sing the team song when they win too - amazing how good it feels! So, get yourself a team to follow, read the back pages as well as the front. Forget about the TAB though, that's a step too far though.
  9. Hey i am from the UK and currently living in Brisbane Does any one know any good clothes shops?? I am used to shopping in River Island, Topshop, Miss Selfridge, Asos and Lipsy back home, so all high street prices. I have found a good few little shops but find there is not a lot of choice Any suggestions would be great Thanks

  12. We will be coming to Sydney later in the month, my 3 Fat Cats are already in Eastern Creek. Just wondered if any Sydney based folk could reccommend a good vet that will be familiar with all the overseas paperwork, vaccinations etc (some in UK were bad....) and also any good catteries? I have seen a couple on the internet but often a personal opinion can be very helpful. Many thanks! x

  18. Theres alot of negativity around at present and i thought it would be good to start a - Feel good thread' something on the lines of good things that are happening to you, like going on holiday and where, getting married, a christening, going to your favourite resteraunt say, for an annivesary anything to lighten the mood and give us all that feel good factor. Today me the wife and kids went to a local 18 hole par 3, golf course and played a round of golf, the wife couldn't hit the ball for toffee and we just laughed all the way round, we had a great happy family time. Anyone else got something good about to happen?

  21. Hi there, Has anyone used Crown before? Were they any good? They told us they were the top end of the market price-wise, estimating £5.5-6k for a 20ft container including insurance, customs and unpacking. The service sounds great but would this price be over the odds? Any other recommendations? Thanks, Nats

  25. Now that the rebel leader has been killed things aren't looking good in Libya, we are bogged down in another billions of pounds of wasted money on trying to take over another middle east country. Isn't it time we just said ............. lets quit, we are making matters worse ........ again, leave them to it, its not our fight. Lets save some money, i don't think i can stand another pay freeze, or pension increase to pay for these fool hardy invasions. Anyone agree?
