    baby care - gold coast

I don't know if this is the right forum but I thought I'd give it a try and if it needs to be moved please do. I am going back to work in October and I need to find a place for my daughter two days a week, however, the problem is that nowhere can guarantee a place, I have tried family day care too! They all say it's too early but I don't want to leave it too late and I am worried that October will come and we will have no where. I am looking for somewhere between pacific pines and mudgeeraba. We are going on a long holiday to UK before I go back to work so there is no point in booking her in and paying when she won't be there (cos money is tight anyway). I also am looking for a place where I can get the rebates from government. Anyone got any advice? What have others done in this situation? Many thanks in advance.

    Gold Coast Living

So it looks like me and my bf will be staying here. We have been here for four years and live in Pacific Pines. We like pac pines we do, but we will probably be moving and I want to move to somewhere with more of a community feel. I want to be able to walk to a pub that has a friendly atmosphere and plays bands and stuff. I want a family sort of orientated place, but not too family if you know what I mean. I am looking for a real community. I want to have friends and fun and people nearby sort of thing. Still in the GC, anyone have any ideas. Has to be between Mudgeeraba and yatala. Cheers for any recommendations:biggrin:
  4. hi, Anybody know where i can find a place that will do some photocopies (few like 100) that is located near or around mermaid waters? Does not have to be a shop can be a local library or somewhere I just need to be able to get them done. Thank you for any info..oh and does anybody know how much it usually costs per sheet?
  5. h.. i live on the gold coast at the moment, and iam just sick of it. i am more sort of a city life lover where have more opportunities to explore. now iam married with 3 young kids under 5, and iam 26 years old at the moment. allthough i havent been to melbourne yet, but i am just feeling like melbourne would be a better place for me to live compared to gold coast..gold coast in my openion is good to visit but not to live because you dont have much to exlore. maybe ideal for retirement but not when you want to move ahead and achieve something (financially and socially) for your self and your family. i would love to hear from you guys or anyone that lives in melbourne to give us an idea where woule probably be a better suburb to stay. i do not want to live far from city though it doestn have to be too close to city. also what do you guys think about average income and expenses for a family. mny thanks.. since i am from afghan backgroung and would possibly want to live some where closer to afghan community, just need to find out a better place for the family to live.

    New to the Gold Coast

My partner and I recently moved to Australia from Nottinghamshire, UK. I'm English but my partner is Aussie though he has lived in the Uk for the last 13 years. We have a beautiful 11 month old daughter. we are currently living with my sister-in-law and her husband in Robina. We have just set up our business and start trading in July and then we can move to rented accomodation. We arrived in Sydney back in April and stayed with family there and so now after 2 months I'm starting to get a little homesick!! Even though i couldn't wait to leave the UK for Australia, i am missing my home comforts and of course my friends. i do however love the gold coast and look forward to getting our car so we can explore the area. It would be great to find out how to meet with other ex pats and to make new friends.
  7. I have recently accepted a job in the Gold Coast, the office is in Helensvale. My partner and I are in a dilemma for a number of reasons and are really confused as to what to do. I'm British but have been living in Singapore for almost 4 years, my partner is Singaporean. I've accepted a position for around 90k before deductions. After calculating tax & outgoings for each month for everything we can think of, it seems we're left with about 1k a month for generally stuff and trips etc,. I know it will be less than that as there is always things we can't account for without experience. We decided to move for a better life but it actually seems like we may be in the same position or probably a little worse off than we are here in Singapore, of course there are other benefits like less crowded, less stressful etc. I'd just like to get an opinion perhaps from other people living there under the same kind of package or at least can advise on whether they think its doable comfortably. We're both in our mid-late twenties and don't live a lavish lifestyle, it would be nice to have a nice little one bed to come back home to, maybe somewhere where we can sip a cold beer on the balcony after work, we were looking at places so far for around $300-$350 a week. we're also bringing our kitten which makes things even harder! We're also both worried that my partner won't be able to find a job. Obviously we don't mind struggling for a while and supporting ourselves on one income source, but it worries us that she may never get a job. Shes a graphic/multimedia designer with only around 2 years work experience. We're thinking to live somewhere around Labrador / Hope Island / Helensvale where she can access the train for jobs in South Brisbane as she doesn't drive. The right location for us is also a worry. We both like a laugh but don't really want to be landed in Surfers having to wade through the drunken louts every night or stuck in some sleazy condo full of loud partying holiday makers. We're making the move on a shoe string budget, pretty much putting all we have into the cost of the move so we're at a big crossroads now and are both pretty stressed :-D Thanks in advance for any comments, we both appreciate any comments. We have crawled the online forums for information over the last few weeks but decided it might be good to post in case anyone is in a similar situation or has some advice!! Ade
  8. Hi, Tried to google but it takes forever so anyone who uses them etc which are the best, reliable and/or cheap taxi around the southern end of the gold coast? ie: robina, varsity, mermaid waters Thanks for the info its really appreciated
  9. I, like many Gold Coasters watching the news yesterday feel very sad about what happened to the policeman at pacific pines tavern. I haven't watched the news yet today so i don't know any updates. But i am thinking this is not such a safe place to live. i mean there are always hold ups in shops etc with guns and i just think it's really scary. I also heard the mayor say on the news that the GC has the safest streets in Oz, if that's the case then that's worrying...for me anyway. I am so glad I don't work in a corner shop, video shop or now even a tavern and to be honest I am now put off going out at night!!! i know things happen everywhere it is just shocking when it's on your doorstep i suppose. I cannot believe that someone can shoot someone else in the face, what is it drugs, reaction or just plain heartlessness. I hope this man can survive for his children, himself and his wife. what is going on on the gold coast?
  10. Please can someone advise which is the best nursing agency to register with, to get casual work with on the gold coast. Currently have a job in Brisbane in a private hospital but want OUT..... Hate it, so I just want to do some casual shifts nearer home on GC, choose my hours, not be ruled by ward rotas that you only get less than a week before the next months rota. Applied for permanent job with queensland health but just want to leave other job asap, work a little until ideal permanent job comes through. Thanks in advance, x Helen

  21. I've recently got a new job in Queensland and have the opportunity to live in or around the Brisbane area as I will be working in the coal fields and not an office. My basic salary will be 70k/year, I will be living on my own and only have expenses for a 3rd of the year as I work 2 weeks on 1 week off. Will 70k be a good enough wage to live in say the Gold Coast area? I am not sure of the cost of living in Oz, but I am British and it's pretty high over here so I am used to paying quite high rent, utilities and food bills. Any help on this would be fantastic, even if it is a simple yes or no. Thanks
  22. Hello there everyone... I have jus joined and thought I would try this out. apologies if this is a rehash of another thread....i have several question topics really....again, sorry if its all a muddle - i will try and be methodical with my questions I'm moving to the GC in august with my good lady for a couple of years (or maybe more) im 29 and she is 27 She is a doctor and will be working in one of the hospitals there...probs both. Anyway I'm in IT (pmo consultant) or construction (Planner) and the chances of getting work in GC I think will be slim...so I am gonna have to do a commute to Brissie I think...(i may have something on the GC hospital, but that is unconfirmed) Q1) Does anyone have any experience of the train journey from GC? Can you get a seat? are the trains like ovens in the heat/are they punctual etc?? If I'm gonna have to do it everyday, be nice to know it's not going to drive me crazy. Q2)What are the good suburbs best to look at? i have looked at Hope Island, Burleigh heads, Robina, Helensville.....basically everywhere. i need a train line nearby...we want somewhere we can get to the beach and enjoy the lifestyle of OZ - but not a party central...hence i have avoided searching Surfers Paradise...generally because all i can find is warnings about the place. Q3) The last few things i have read about the GC have said there is a fair bit of violence and hassle when you try and have a night out....i mean i am from St Helens so a town full of idiots on a night out isnt new... - but still....dont wanna purposefully put myself and my girlfriend in that kind of place... Is it really that bad??? we still have an option to move to Sydney with her job...but looking at the amazing houses we can have on GC for the same money...we have sort of made up our minds... Any advice would be really grateful...:confused::confused: we are so excited now its finally getting sorted... - its been a year in the making.... Thanks in advance guys... Chris
  23. Hi, been back a month now and spinning but thought some people might find our report useful, I know i have really enjoyed reading other peoples. We departed on feb 13th from london, first stop Brisbane, we flew china airlines, to be honest for no other reason than it was literally half the price of all its competitors. They get a bad press but were fine, seemed to have all the services, films etc from other flights i have been on. Not posh but fine. well worth saving two grand! I should introduce us, me, my partner and our three children aged 1,4 and 7 !! needless to say the trip was not relaxing ! They were good kids on the plane and we had a bassinet for the baby which really helped. Stayed initially for ten days on the gold coast. Cheap but nice apartment in broadbeach near surfers. It was a little tired but clean and dead cheap. Had the lot including pool. I was amazed at how much i loved the gold coast, had been once years ago and not keen but it was great fun.Lovely weather, loads to do and i particularly loved the area's away from surfers such as curumbine and thereabouts. Could live there in a heartbeat!! the kids adored it ! My o.h looked for jobs in her speciality and had a look around and a visit but looks like jobs don't come up that often which was very disappointing. Last job that came up ten people applied! She is not on the skills list and we are appying for defacto as i have an australian passport so are fortunate that we can go anywhere. we drove down from the gold coast and had an idyllic two days in byron bay before stopping for three nights in port mcquarie. We stayed in a caravan site there and i would really recommend this to anyone, wild parakeets in the morning!! Beautiful. Drove down to sydney for the rest of the month. Had a shock there. Found out my oh could not work there as her job does not really exist in the same form. That was a shocker and wish we had researched better before planning our reccie ! Was really suprised to find my feelings had changed towards sydney.Loved it when i worked there years ago but that was as a single younger woman. Found it too cityish and big, with dreadful traffic! Not great for kids. Also found we could never afford to live there. Had a great time, went to mardi gras, visited beautiful beaches, coogee in particular but realised could not live there!Maybe its an age and stage thing! So home we came and it has been a whirlwind!! Made our mind up that we definately want to do it but feel cheated that we did our reccie in two places we cannot go !! With the benefit of hindsight should have included a trip to western australia as that is where we are now looking.!! What did we learn ? We absolutely love australia, my partner had never been and was blown away by its beauty and cleanliness. We both could not believe how friendly everyone was, compared to the uk. My health was so improved, i have arthritis and my joints were so much better, i cut down my pain meds by 50 per cent and swam every day!!so it is the place to go for a better future, at least for me ! Cost wise ? there is no doubt that things are more expensive. We shop cheap and found that a weeks shop was a about 120 dollars compared to 60 pounds here. However in my opinion the cheap stuff was better value and good meat and wine a lot cheaper. We also found that k mart was cheap for bits and bobs...body board 4 dollars! Beer was silly money!!Petrol of course alot cheaper. We felt the money even's out as we spent so little in the day and everywhere had clean and free barbies in parks and by beaches so could take our food and drink and spend the day there. It was amazing to see the children body boarding and swimming everyday, especially coming from a cold long winter! Sorry this has gone on a bit but really wanted to share our story so far! So now starts the long process of visa application. Just a word of caution, if , like us, you are not rich think really carefully about if you need that reccie! We had a ball, caught up with friends and of course now know its the right thing to do but the downside is we have spent alot of money just when we need it ! Good luck to everyone and thanks to all for sharing your stories and insight!
  24. Hi, Well, after researching Brisbane and deciding on where we'd ideally like to live, we have now been offered a good job opportunity in the Gold Coast, and with 8 weeks to go, will need to decide, if we choose there, where we'd like to be based. Its so hard, as I dont know much about the Gold Coast really. I've looked at Coomera, Pacific Pines, Arundel, Varsity Lakes, Robina, Helensvale, but have no clue as to which areas have decent schools. There's only so much you can find out from the Naplan results. My OH may be working near the Versace Hotel or in Robina, so areas close enough to commute would be good, but my sister lives in Brisbane, so probably north end of the GC so as closer to there too. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of the schools near these areas? Or can advise which areas to avoid? I watched Phil Down Under and the couple said that the house they saw near the university was in their friends' opinions, not a good area to live. Thanks Shaz
  25. I have a Freedom Furniture glass dining table and 6 chairs with matching coffee table. Tables are in very good condition and the chairs are sound altho they do need recovering. Its a bargain - table was originally $1200 and coffee table $500. We have moved house and bought new. $350.
