    Antique furniture

Hi to all We're now members of the crazy club (from a separate thread tonight). We don't have our visas yet but already sold the car, had the estate agent around today, agreed a price and the house goes on the market in the morning 'yeah mad, but what the hell). Gone this far, spent loads of money on application so no turning back now. Our question is we have a couple of nice pieces of hardwood antique furniture and a couple of pieces of reclaimed pine furniture, had them for a long time, not cheap, and would like to keep hold of them. Would like to know if this will cause us any grief with customs. Has anyone else taken any antique furniture to oz or are thinking of taken any? Any advice appreciated, before we consider selling them? Eddie and family

    Taking New Furniture to Oz

Have any of you taken new furniture items (ie - sofa's, bed frames) from the UK in your containers? I understand there is import duty to pay on anything less than 1-year old. Does anyone know how much this duty is? Are receipts needed, even for items that look new but are over a year old? Also, has anyone had to have items treated (ie wooden items etc) by the quarantine officials on arrival at port? Any advice much appreciated.......
  4. Hi I am trying to work out the logistics of our move - a nightmare many of you have probably been through! I am planning on staying in a serviced apartment for a few weeks while we find somewhere to rent, but I am them wondering what we do in the first 5/6 weeks in our new rental house before all our stuff arrives e.g. bed and fridge? Any clever suggestions? Anyone rented furniture? thanks
  5. Hello, Not a major dilemma but can someone explain the situation with regards to shipping "outdoorsy" stuff,...specifically garden furniture & bikes. Muddy things have to be steam cleaned..is that right?:dull: But where is that done,is it in Oz? Our bikes are in pretty good nick (prob cos we don't ride them much!) & our gung-ho attitude of buying all new in Oz is fading away!Is there extra expense to add in having everything cleaned? Thanks ever so, Paula
  6. moving from furnished to unfurnished appartment, looking for second hand furniture.
  7. You may find that a visit or two to some of the Opportunity shops will pay off. There are a number on Chapel Street (St. Vinnie's etc) which have had some lovely pieces in at unbelievable prices! If you have transport, there are two massive warehouses in Hoppers Crossing. I understand renting furniture to be an expensive idea but other people may have had different experiences.. All the best for a good flight and a great life in Melbourne. As an aside, I heard that Uni Lecturers get the highest Super at 17%.... Lucky you!

    Renting furniture

Hi all getting close now, leave for Melbourne on Wednesday! My question is, does anyone know if it is possible to rent furniture in Melbourne? I'm shipping most of my stuff over, but there will obviously be a gap of a few weeks between me renting a place and it showing up (and form the look of some of the posts here, that might be optimistic). Any ideas on places or prices? Also, I might have to store some of my stuff when it arrives-to start off with I'll probably rent a 1 bedder. Again, any ideas? Thanks! Andy

    garden furniture!

:? does anybody out there know about the quarantine laws are like for shipping items across to oz? we have a lovely garden bench with our names engraved in it, it was a wedding present and we would like to ship it with some other stuff, however i read somewhere that the ozzy quarantine laws are very stringent and that any wooden furniture could be destroyed if they feel there may be arisk of infestation. (it doesnt appear to have). anybody know anything it would be much appreciated. Beth.

Hi, We're in a dilemma :!: :!: . We don't know wether it's worth shipping our own furniture from the UK. We only have some leather and pine furniture (no beds or fridges etc) and about twenty boxes. Can anybody share their experiences with shipping firms in terms of costs and reliability, Many thanks Glen.
